I'm not big into Pims/Outliners. I'm not sure how TreePad Pro stacks up against the others. But it's been around forever. There are 3rd party tools for conversion to other formats. I use the TreePadLite free myself. From the Pro page it seems like it supports inline images.

Also they publish the specs for the file format. If you do a little programming yourself you may be able to input something and output it to TreePad format as I did with a Folder comment command line tool that spits out a TreePadLite file with a node for each file in the folder.

http://www.treepad.com/

Edit: seems they have a bunch of versions. Not sure which feature goes with which tier of the program. But the pages is there if it looks interesting. :)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: WhyReboot?
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 18, 2012, 03:14 PM »
Looks like a handy utility. I use WinPatrol which notifies me if an installer is sticking something in an autostart location and asks me to OK it.  If it's RunOnce then usually I'll let it reboot as it's likely finishing off the install. But if it sticks something in the Run key then it likely just wants to stick an agent in the tray or some other nuisance stuff.

Not sure if WinPatrol monitors as many locations.

MoveIt 1.2.0.0 Added keys 1 - 9 (top main keyboard row only, not numberpad) to position windows without resizing in tic tac toe style. 1 = bottom left corner of work area. 9 = top right.

This should eliminate the need to use TicClick if you have MoveIt running.

See About Box for details.

I bumped up the version to 1.2.0.0 since it embeds the functionality of another utility.

MoveIt 1.1.9.3 Changed Arrow hotkeys to Alt-Winkey Arrow for move by large increment, and Control-Winkey  Arrow to move by smaller increment. This should remove conflict with commonly used hotkeys.

that's a good choice, will test, thanks :-*

edit/ it's working great

Cool. I appreciate the feedback. :)

The hotkeys are good points. I'm thinking of changing Alt Arrow to Win-Alt-Arrow and Control-Shift Arrow to Control=Win Arrow.

MoveIt 1.1.9.2 When snapping a window to quadrant, MoveIt now uses Hit Test to make sure the mouse cursor is on the caption bar. This is to avoid possible conflicts with Alt Click. When dragging the window the mouse should be in the right place anyway. Just a precaution since it doesn't seem to have any effect on responsiveness.

MoveIt 1.1.9.1 Added Control Shift Arrow hotkeys.  Works the same as Alt Arrow(which is still there) but moves the window by a smaller increment.

Changed Snap Explorer to Quadrant to Snap Window to Quadrant. Now the Mouse Cursor Position is used to determine the quadrant rather than the window origin.  Any movable window may be snapped. If the window is not resizeable it is just moved. Otherwise it is also sized to fit in the quadrant.

See About Box and Readme.txt for more details.

Small portable apps I stick under a folder I made directly under the OS drive. That way if I do a Custom Install they don't get wrapped up into Windows.old.  They are still there to use with the new OS. I only have to make shortcuts. Works very well with apps that don't make registry changes.

But I disable UAC anyway.

General Software Discussion / Re: Visual Basic or Visual C++
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 08, 2012, 01:52 PM »
You seem to have one or two types of Windows programs you wish to code already in mind. You also have some understanding of a flavor of Basic.  Rather than trying to map out your future development as a developer, why not use your current knowledge to learn more about the type of applications you wish to write?

Here's a good code respository:
http://www.planetsou...default.asp?lngWId=1

also here's an open source, source:
http://sourceforge.net/

If you search source forge with "win32" as one of the terms it tends to bring up the Windows apps and filter out most of the Linux stuff.

There's nothing like looking at working code to learn. Especially if you can load it in a debugger, make changes, see what happens.

As you learn various programming languages and more about computers in general, it changes your perspective.  I know when I first started to program in GWBasic.. after a little time I got confidence. I thought I could do anything.  Then as I learned more about computers I realized gwBasic was just a program that provided a sand box for me to play in. I could do some useful things, but it wasn't going to be useful for writing device drivers. But I didn't know that then.

Learn a bit. Experiment a bit. Read a bit.  Have fun with it. Along the way you'll make some stuff that works and you enjoy using. Others may enjoy using your apps too.  But it's a bit soon to map out your career as a software developer unless you have a guaranteed position waiting for you someplace. :)  The "spider web" approach is a valid approach esp. if you are not attending classes at university.  Read books and articles. The interesting ones may list references.  Expand to those and see where they got their insights.

It's kind of like finding music you like. If you enjoy a musician's work in a certain style you might listen to other works by the members of that band, and who is in their bands etc..  It spider webs out pretty naturally if you're curious. :)

Living Room / Re: Do we need other programs?
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 08, 2012, 01:29 PM »
I recently watched a film titled InAlienable. It was written by the guy who played Chekov on Start Trek TOS. Seemed to me like a "make work" project so some Trek actors and other Sci Fi old timers(like Richard Hatch from Battlestar Galactica) could get a few pay checks.

It's funny that this issue pops up in regards to software. Not so much about hardware.  Think of your basic passenger automobile. It's a box with some upholsterred seats and wheels. In fact in the old days American car manufacturers were known for having several product lines that consisted of the same car with a different bit of chrome stuck on.  Plymouth Valiant was a Dodge Dart etc..

Different programs that have the same basic function may have differing styles or extra features.  But one part of it may be, "hmm, I can flip burgers, or, I can be CEO of Type it yourself inc. software co." :)

edit: Another consideration is fewer features.  Sometimes you want something specialized with a small footprint.

OneKey 2.0.3.0 Minor code tweaks.  Now includes all AHK_L source.  You can get the icons used by running OneKey_IconInst.exe to unpack them. OneKey.exe runs that app so that it doesn't need to store all the icons in the OneKey.exe file. Just makes it a tad smaller in memory sitting in the tray.

Hmm, seems I inadvertently posted bad info. According to AHK_L author himself, AHK_L doesn't use Variants for everything.  They are used in Object implementation. But evidently ahk cooked up its own scheme for variable storage.

http://www.autohotke...amp;p=548540#p548382

In any case, there is no "type" only fluid storage, outside of the Object implementation.

FolderCache 6.3.8.0

v. 6.3.7.0      When adding to stack Tooltip displays info for 1 second instead of 1/2 second.

v. 6.3.8.0      Updated Middle Mouse Click handler for better response. Left clicking on the desktop to make it the "active window" before middle clicking is no longer needed. Also the handler does not "eat" the key.

Initial trials indicate the hesitation between middle mouse click and pop up window display disappears using this method.

I'm not sure if it automatically does favorites. You may have to build a site list. But this utility looks interesting. It's freeware. I think I'll check it out myself:

Black Moon Search

Hmmm, seems a bit weird.  The download file is lilit.exe.  For some reason I don't feel confident to click on it. Either that or it's caused by some unicode or code page thing.  Last version I could find is 2008.

If somebody has a sandbox to try it in maybe that would be best?  :)
