To me the functionality is more important though, and the standard orthogonal file manager interface with NC compatible keyboard shortcuts

If your CLI apps include DOS ones and batch files, take a look at Horst Schaeffer's WBAT, which while itself DOS, is as Windows-like as you'll find in a console application.  I've seen it used as the menu interface in some rescue boot disks.

I forgot Romana  :-[  And now it appears that The Master has...  undergone gender reassignment...

Hmmm.  I belatedly realised this means The Master is now The Mistress, which changes the entire character of the show...

The thing I could never wrap my head around was the concept of The Doctor as the last of a race of Time Lords.  I mean, if these guys are always scampering around in the centuries how are there not any of them left around even if they got killed in the future?
Because there aren't any Time Ladies?  ;)
(cross-reference Robert E. Heinlein's short story '"—All You Zombies—"' and Mark Twain's answer to the question "What would men be without women?" "Scarce, sir…mighty scarce".)

I run Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, UAC On, user account.  Lately I've had a number of BSODs.  When Windows finally crawls back into action, I usually find the tray has been partially scrambled.  The Network icon is usually missing, and the icons whose notifications I've customized are all set to Hide when inactive.

Please, is there any way to save the tray configuration for these, so I don't have to change them back to the way I want them by hand?

TIA...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Add short excerpt to clip Title in main window

mouser, this kind of question has come up before.  Is there any way to make that cell more prominent, and/or add more in Help, or a video?

The clipboard manager I use most is ArsClip, which has this:
The Clipboard Bar's main purpose is a clip viewer window.
This mouse-friendly window also acts as a Drag and Drop target, a Popup
trigger, and clipboard manager.
... and I don't use it.  Hence a "no" from me.

One of the features I most like about CHS is its Paste Templates, invoked by popup > Additional actions... on last clip.  The main popup menu has accelerator keys.  Please, could there be accelerator keys on the Additional actions menu too?

...I wouldn't know.  As I wrote, I use the much superior Total Commander  :)
...Eh? Misses the point.
My first post made the point, not very explicitly perhaps, that there's no "need" to make downloads of CHS that only contain updated files (which is what I understood the OP to want) when one can rely on a good file manager to overwrite new/changed files and ignore the rest.  Unless, of course, one is on dialup and really, really wants to minimise download size.  I have been in the habit - for about 15 years - of using Total Commander for my file management needs, and almost never use Windows Explorer, so don't know what it offers.  I imagine most frequent PC users do likewise.

@rjbull and @dcwul62: If you open the .ZIP file for the latest portable version and then select and copy all its contents to the installed portable proggie's folder, doesn't Windows Explorer check first and ask you if you want to install newer/older versions and/or overwrite, etc.?
I wouldn't know.  As I wrote, I use the much superior Total Commander  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: The most stupid Windows error?

I run Vista Home Premium, ...

Every second version of Windows... Darn that meme just keeps on giving!
The well-liked Win7 and hated/despised Win8 seem to make the unloved Vista Win6 and well-liked XP Win5.  So I wondered if there was some kind of ju-ju related to odd vs. even version numbers, and what Microsoft were thinking of to take the risk of jumping over Win9...

I run Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, UAC On, user account.  When I want to shut down, I close open application programs, click on the desktop, press Alt-F4, choose Shut down.  Occasionally I get this BSOS Black Screen of Stupidity:

Windows can't shut down because Windows is shutting down?  >:(

Of related interest, TextSTAT - Simple Text Analysis Tool:
Concordance software for Windows, GNU/Linux and MacOS

TextSTAT is a simple programme for the analysis of texts. It reads plain text files (in different encodings) and HTML files (directly from the internet) and it produces word frequency lists and concordances from these files. This version includes a web-spider which reads as many pages as you want from a particular website and puts them in a TextSTAT-corpus. The new news-reader, too, puts news messages in a TextSTAT-readable corpus file.
TextSTAT reads MS Word and OpenOffice files. No conversion needed, just add the files to your corpus...
In TextSTAT you can use regular expression which provides you with powerful search possibilities. The programme is multilingual. Because it uses Unicode internally, TextSTAT can cope with many different languages and file encodings.

Found Deals and Discounts / Breevy text expander for Windows $5 off 12th Oct. 2014
« Last post by rjbull on October 12, 2014, 04:41 PM »
Snap1.jpg
Breevy is a text expander for Windows that helps you type faster and more accurately by allowing you to abbreviate long words and phrases -- saving you time and money.

Simply define an abbreviation for a longer piece of text, like eml for [email protected].

Then, in the future, instead of typing that longer piece of text, type the abbreviation you associated with that text in any application, and Breevy will automatically replace it for you, instantly.

Xnview (freeware) has a compare tool
Thanks - are you using XnView or XnViewMP?
442
As for me, I am using a 3rd party tool (Beyond Compare) to do a foldercompare of the existing portable version with the new, extracted folder and only update what is necessary
Why not use an unarchiver that checks for new/changed files?  I use the one built into my favourite file manager, Total Commander.  It gives various options, a particularly useful one being Overwrite all older.

Living Room / Re: You like science fiction, don't you? Of course you do!

^ looks like two of Sir Terry Pratchett's books are in similar vein:
  • The Science of Discworld
When a wizardly experiment goes adrift, the wizards of Unseen University find themselves with a pocket universe on their hands: Roundworld, where neither magic nor common sense seems to stand a chance against logic. The Universe, of course, is our own. And Roundworld is Earth. As the wizards watch their accidental creation grow, we follow the story of our universe from the primal singularity of the Big Bang to the Internet and beyond. Through this original Terry Pratchett story (with intervening chapters from Cohen and Stewart) we discover how puny and insignificant individual lives are against a cosmic backdrop of creation and disaster. Yet, paradoxically, we see how the richness of a universe based on rules, has led to a complex world and at least one species that tried to get a grip of what was going on.
  • The Science of Discworld II: The Globe
The acclaimed Science of Discworld centred around an original Pratchett story about the Wizards of Discworld. In it they accidentally witnessed the creation and evolution of our universe, a plot which was interleaved with a Cohen & Stewart non-fiction narrative about Big Science. In The Science of Discworld II our authors join forces again to see just what happens when the wizards meddle with history in a battle against the elves for the future of humanity on Earth. London is replaced by a dozy Neanderthal village. The Renaissance is given a push. The role of fat women in art is developed. And one very famous playwright gets born and writes The Play. Weaving together a fast-paced Discworld novelette with cutting-edge scientific commentary on the evolution and development of the human mind, culture, language, art, and science, this is a book in which 'the hard science is as gripping as the fiction'. (The Times)

Thanks, folks - especially tomos, interesting suggestions.

I could have been clearer.  What prompted the query was a desire to decide on my personal preferred ISO rating, and I wanted enough images visible at once, and as big as possible, to do that; and also later to compare compositions.  I wasn't looking for a duplicate detector (yet), and didn't want to buy Lightroom if I could help it; it's enough trouble to stop AdobeARM running all the time >:(

I agree that four images is adequate, though I'd have liked six if possible.  Of course, then they get smaller.  I see the well-liked BreezeBrowser Pro only gives 2, 3 or 4.  It looks like ExifPro Image viewer offers a large subset of the features of BreezeBrowser, at a much lower cost

I'm looking for a simple image comparison tool.  That is, if I make several variations on a digital photo, I'd like to be able to see them all on screen at the same time, in their original aspect ratios, tiled, and sized so as to fill the screen as much as possible (i.e. be as big as possible, rather than thumbnails).  The attached image is from Faststone Image Viewer 5.2, the first such application I've seen though 4 images is the maximum.  Are there any alternatives, please?

I find sometimes certain clipboard managers give me problems, such as freezing, etc.  I have lots of 3rd party utilities running in the background, so I assume there's sometimes a conflict.  ArsClip was one of these.
In earlier versions of Windows the clipboard chain sometimes broke, but I wouldn't blame the clipboard manager for that.  I haven't had any problems with clipboard managers in Vista.  The only other conflict I've seen is with some versions of Typing Assistant, a text expander that appears to work solely through the clipboard, but they seem to have cured that problem with the very latest full release  (6.1).

> ArsClip bloated?  When its .exe is under 4 MB?

While this probably is good programming, it has tons of features and settings that I don't need,
I'm surprised, because I've always felt that ArsClip hits the sweet spot.  Basic features are quick, easy and fuss-free.  The many advanced features, critically, don't get in the way of the basic ones.  Indeed, you have to go looking for them, and I've even wondered if advanced features are too well hidden.

and OTOH it is not able to simply show a no frills popup next to its own tray icon, but instead puts its window all over the place on my triple monitors  :(
Hovering over the tray icon shows an abbreviated copy of the current clip, as does the Clipboard Bar if enabled.  I agree that I would prefer popup location to be predictable, as I find its jumping about seemingly at random disconcerting.  The location of the Clipboard Bar can be fixed and I would like that extended to the popup.

[Edit at UK time 2014-10-07, 21:18:-]
Oh  :o  Delving into Configuration, I find various settings I didn't know about that may help fix the popup location.  Viz.:

Configuration > Popup Hotkeys > Alternatives > Mouse
Show Popup ...
[X] when mouse button is held Right Click / Middle Click / Left + Right Click
Short Delay ----X---- Long Delay
The [Per-Program Options] can override this setting.

This appears to popup where the cursor is.

Configuration > Popup Hotkeys > Alternatives > System Tray Icon
Show Popup ...
[ ] on foreground window when icon double clicked
[ ] on foreground window when icon single clicked
[X] on icon when double clicked
[ ] on icon when single clicked

This appears to popup above the tray icon.

Configuration > Popup > Behaviour > Screen Position:
Display Method
[X] Automatic (Recommended)
The popup is shown as dose to the pasting location as possible.
[ ] Mouse Cursor
The popup is shown near the mouse cursor.
[ ] Program Corner
The popup is shown near the corner of the foreground program.

You might prefer the last option.

BTW, if you go with CLCL, don't overlook earlier DC postings.  In particular, lanux128's post Re: Must-have apps in the System tray? points to AbteriX's two threads giving a tutorial, and compilation of reviews, on CLCL.  They too are on DC.

Living Room / Re: Who is your Favourite "Doctor"?
« Last post by rjbull on October 06, 2014, 04:18 PM »
I'm torn; Tom Baker was the Doctor, but I enjoyed the flamboyant exuberance of Jon Pertwee.

As for companions, the luscious Leela has been mentioned, but I also loved Jo, the super-scrumptious Katy Manning in Jon Pertwee days, and liked Nyssa, Sarah Sutton, too.  Some people thought Adric was a pain...

The villains; yes, some of them were terrifying to look at, but some of the more "normal" ones were maybe worse.  Viz., Roger Delgado's elegant megalomaniac The Master, delighting in destruction; and I found the insane militarist the Graff Vynda-K chilling.

I've only watched a few of the "modern" episodes and haven't found them anything like as enthralling.  Perhaps that's rosy-tinted nostalgia, but it just isn't the same show that I used to enjoy so much.  Much more slick production, of course, but what use is that?  It looks much like any other slick modern made-for-TV film.  People used to snigger at the cheap production of classic Dr. Who, but maintaining any sort of willing suspense of disbelief of a big ask with a show of this kind.  I thought the rough and ready, make do and mend look of the cheap production actually helped by making things more like real life.  Now, things seem too bright and colourful; everybody is too well turned out in designer clothes, too clean and tidy; even the modern cybermen look like they're fresh from a cyber boy band.  The classic "big ears" versions were more scary because they were humanoid but a travesty of humans.

Drifting off topic, but I had to respond - this is one of the subtle uses of AdBlock - it lets you hide pictures you don't like. There are a few people whose avatars annoy me too. Fine - just adblock them away and then they just vanish!
I use the DC forum profile setting to not see avatars and sigs.  Saves lots of screen space, as well as avoiding annoying animated avatars.

But, re the OP...  ArsClip bloated?  When its .exe is under 4 MB?

And just for the record, if you lost your stylus, you could use any old object that had a tip with the Palm. Not that it saved them from ending up on the scrapheap of technological history
I'm still using my Palm T3...  and if you want styli, take a look at Cult Pens stylus search
I thought there was a difference, though.  Aren't Palm screens resistive, which needs a stylus (though it does usually work with a finger), whereas mobile phone/tablet screens are capacitative, which expects fingers?
