Following this thread. I'm willing to do some testing in my spare time when next version shows up.

(Why arent the old scattered dlls in the various plugin folders simply crushed by the new fscript version whenever it's updated ? I know that I look stupid at the moment as I'm missing something, obviously...)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: FARR Windows Search 0.1.0
« Last post by Armando on January 25, 2011, 04:46 PM »
I'm late to this thread. I had a problem with my DC related e-mail address and didn't receive notifications for that thread...

I'm eager to try this fix (thanks CyberEvil!)...

Question : Since this fscript.dll can be found in several places, where do I have to paste the v.1.20 ?

Thanks!

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Writing Outliner for MS Word
« Last post by Armando on January 25, 2011, 12:59 PM »
Looks interesting indeed. I'd have less need for it now than I had a couple years ago... But I like the features and the implementation.

Short feature list :

    * Transform Word into a much more powerful utility optimized for large scale, complex writing projects.
    * Manage and write sections of your long writing projects as though they were discrete documents.
    * View a document as a Multi-Column Outline with meta data displayed, including titles, synopsis, notes, status icon, label icon, tags, word count, target word count, and so on.
    * Utilize ultra-fast text search.
    * Utilize tabbed-editing for much faster navigation between documents.
    * Organize your documents with customizable Document Status Icons and Document Label Icons.
    * Attach customizable text tags to draft documents.
    * Write synopses and notes for each draft document.
    * Access a backup and restore feature allows you to manually or automatically (upon closing a project) backup your whole writing project. Revert to any of the old revisions at a future time!
    * Navigate your files from within Writing Outliner with a full-featured Windows Explorer component.
    * Merge separate draft documents into a single long document for output.
    * Get a visual overview of your project with the new Corkboard feature.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlining software recommendations?
« Last post by Armando on January 24, 2011, 10:05 PM »
Opinions and criticisms are legitimate... Even if there are a few inaccuracies... ;)  It's not like you've been impolite and I understand where you're coming from. In my own IQ day to day usage I found a balance (especially with the latest IQ release) where I get a lot done without too much tinkering. But I do know where/what are the problems, etc.. I stick with it though as I know that Pierre is committed and I couldn't achieve with another software what I'm able to do in IQ.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlining software recommendations?

Hi superboyac, I just sent you an e-mail.

Do I have to say that there are valid points in what you say about IQ (which I use for my everyday work -- which means very different projects ranging from task management to programing) ? Yes, the UI needs some work, bugs need to be ironed out, and you're fed up. These points are common with beta software.  :) Granted, IQ has been in beta for a long time now, but still...

Now... I really didn't want to intervene in this thread. After all, it's none of my business if one prefers something over something else, etc. But there are also some inaccuracies in your more specific criticisms of IQ, which surprises me since you use it heavily. I don't have the time to go into each of them. I'll just pick the last one :

we also need to be able to customize our own keyboard shortcuts (this goes for IQ as well)

Almost every single keyboard shortcut is customizable in IQ. And not only that, but you can save various customizations and load them at will. And they're not customizable through some strange and unknown IQ UI mechanism. They just use the "standard" MS Office way... Anyhow.

====

Some thoughts about constructive criticism :

I still don't understand why you don't post whatever criticism, comments you have about IQ's development, bugs, etc. on the IQ forum? This is a personal choice, of course. And I personally don't mind... I just wonder.

Writing about IQ's defects here or on some other website/blog usually won't be as useful in terms of IQ's progression. Not sure that the developer has the time to check out all forums for bug reports, comments, suggestions list, etc. Not to mention the other IQ users -- how can they be aware that this or that is discussed in DC instead of the IQ forum ?

As far as I know, you have very rarely dropped by to express your opinions on this feature, reported a bug, etc. I did... Sure, IQ's forum is slow, etc. etc., but so far I and others, have been able to use it to discuss stuff (and, believe me, we're busy too).

So if Pierre really wants to attract more users, he has to make the interface much more elegant, so that the power of the program is accessible to people who are giving it the 10-minute test run.  That means he has to soon stop adding features and dedicate himself to overhauling the interface.  Only then will more users get attracted to the program.  Word of mouth alone will spread.  Right now, there might be a little word of mouth but 90% of normal users will be very intimidated and not use the program.

Now, I believe I know how to improve the interface to be this way, but first Pierre has to be convinced of what I said above.  If he's not, then I'm not the squeaky wheel that's going to get the attention.

If you don't ask Pierre what are his plans for the next year, or what IQ's development involves, it's easy to speculate that he should to this or that... And if you know what changes should be made to IQ for it to become "better", you should definitely write that specific "feature"/UI change list (I'm still waiting for it)...  Before it's too late.  But you should understand and accept that your list is/will be just a list. Like all "lists"/opinion, its importance will be evaluated in terms of intelligence, effort, feasibility, logic, effects, etc. Hopefully, in any project development, it's the soundness of the proposition that should counts, no who says/writes it.

In the end, what's hard is for the developper to be able to know what's the "best" choice among many... And how to spend his precious energy and time. The "best choice" is usually not that obvious (whether we're dealing with software development or anything else). Isn't that one reason why so many business/projects "fail" or don't succeed as well as they could've (to various degrees) ?

hmmmm... From the comments in the forum it seems more like an alpha than a beta. Typical.
No sure that I'll have enough patience for this one -- already investing time in other beta projects.
Will see, after Christmas and all that.

I've been so busy that I haven't got the time to test it yet...  :(

I have the feeling that this is going to be the answer to my video editing problems. (I.e. : money, mostly... Would like to buy one of the pro solutions out there -- Sony Vegas Pro in particular -- but I don't do enough pro editing to justify the cost.)

Anybody wants to share some first impressions?

When my NOD32 license finished, I didn't renew it and went for MSE. It found 1 "threat" NOD never found... :) That said, I didn't really inquire to find out if the catch was relevant or not...

It's a bit slower than NOD32 when scanning, and the CPU goes wild once in a rare while (when syncing my Outlook calendar with Google). All in all, I find that it works well and I'm very very satisfied. No system instability and weird stuff.

(As for the firewall, I'm now using Comodo -- was with Online Armour and had to drop it only a few weeks or a couple months after renewing my license : was experiencing freezes etc. All that went away with Comodo. When I'm working in a Café with my laptop, I feel more secure using a good firewall...)

Farr updates seems to break the Timer plugin (czb) settings, or the timer doesn't like updates... :)
I've had problems with the last 2 updates. It might not be the direct cause, but there seem to be a link.

I got this error a while ago :

Screenshot - 2010-11-26 , 00_04_10.png

Last week, I tracked down the problem to the farr's ini file.

Half an hour ago, I got fed up with the JSON.parse error and not being able to use the Timer plugin , so I decided to solve it. Turned out that something messed up my findandrunrobot.ini file and the json there was all messed up. I corrected the code there, and all is fine now.
[...]

So... JSON syntax was wrong so I corrected it and all went well.

Today I install farr update, and I get the JSON parsing error message again. Of course I'm going to try to see what's wrong with the Timer's JSON stuff, but it's weird...

Any ideas ?

Wiped out farr... The error is still there (the new one... JSON.parse). This is too weird for me today. I give up.

However -- and I know it has nothing to do with the windows search plugin -- it's weird that the json syntax got messed up. Seems like some regex or json parser somewhere didn't do its job properly... Not sure where I should post that info... if you have an idea... :)

Thanks for your note.
In any case, I should've not dismiss SyncBack'S renaming capabilities completely, as there are some. It's just that performance wise it doesn't make a big difference, if any.

The only advantage, it seems to me, is if you're working over a network so that means less data transfer.

That said, I've always liked syncback. And even the few drawbacks didn't prevent me from using it.

I have posted a few things in their forums a while ago. I also followed the threads on delta technology. Have you ?

http://2brightsparks...?t=4473&start=30

They don't seem interested (not giving customers any answers whatsoever), at all.

Or threads about file/folder moving/renaming

http://2brightsparks...p;highlight=renaming
http://2brightsparks...p;highlight=renaming

Some have asked to offer the option in mirror mode... But...
446
Yup. Do they work for you ?

1- Have you read what's in the parentheses (and in the help file)?
2- I've been using SyncBack for a loooooooong time. I know these (renaming) features, and :
a- renaming detection is only available in 2 ways sync, not in one way sync, which is what interrests me. So it's useless here. They aren't available in mirror mode.
b- as an aside : never found it made a difference in terms of spead (so what good are they...) when I did the 2 ways sync, a while ago.
3- Fast backup does accelerate backup (used it exclusively) but it's still slower than, let's say... Bvckup. AND it's not even available in 2 way sync (which is normal, BTW). Kind of a catch 22 if you ask me. It's one (renaming detection) or the other (fast backup)... And if renaming detection is supposed to work during Fast backup, then there's a bug and it should be fixed as it never worked for me.
4- Renaming detection never worked properly for me... If you're satisfied then great.

I still use SyncBack, but not to do mirror syncing.
447
I like these advices.

There's nothing inherently evil about java. Google is a different subject. But is Google more or less evil than Microsoft? Maybe. There's room for a (sterile) debate.

1- Android is open source, the "other" isn't. I'm not saying open source  is necessarily better than closed source... Just saying... Only, it could be an interesting element to consider when building and argument list to speculate on evilness.

2- For Android, you can develop apps using the very powerful and free IDE Eclipse. For windows you'll most probably need to use the rather expensive Visual Studio to develop applications. Unless you want to use the free one... Which is good enough I suppose. Pick your poison.

3- Android will probably be adopted by more companies as there are less restrictions, more freedom. I suspect that it'll become "bigger" than the mobile Windows/Apple OS. I might be completely wrong though.

Ultimately, I must say I hope for the world that Apple won't win the battle and that the 3 systems will co-exist for a long time to come... For the sake of healthy competition, "DRM hell + pay for every single software update" softening.

The tablet looks nice for sure !

I don't think that you can really compare the iPod touch with the ARCHOS 3cam vision: for a multimedia device it's nice, but you can't really use it as a pda.

If you need a real phone... yes better get a real one! Either one of the Android models or the Windows 7. Why windows 7 instead of android though?
