LaunchBar Commander / either my hand is too slow, or LBC is too quick
« Last post by Curt on March 16, 2017, 03:28 AM »
When I am in the My First Dock icon, (Windows 10 Pro laptop), LBC is trying to update the various menus just a little too soon; my Windows is struggling to update the menu. "My Documents" is a very resource demanding menu to point at by accident.

Can I please request the option for LBC to wait a fifth of a second before updating what menu it thinks the mouse is pointing at?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: CPUBalance Pro [free GOTD]

^ CPUBalance is from Bitsum, the makers of Process Lasso. CPUBalance is available as $0 FREE or as $10 PRO
https://bitsum.com/portfolio/cpubalance/

This application is a SUBSET of the technology found in Process Lasso. It is slimmer than Process Lasso and designed to do one job really well – ProBalance.

CPUBalance is unique in that it can either run independent of Process Lasso, or along-side Process Lasso, offering extended functionality over the ‘base’ ProBalance algorithm.

If you already have Process Lasso v8, you do not NEED this application, but as a side effect of having it, do get these benefits:

Newer tech than is in Lasso v8, but Lasso v9 will eventually have that tech.
A different system tray icon for specific ProBalance interactions.
A new Frequency of Action (Restraint) metric, which is pretty cool.
Note that these features are all planned for Process Lasso v9 – so no removal or reduction of features here!

General Software Discussion / Re: Long Path Fixer
« Last post by Curt on March 14, 2017, 03:25 AM »
It now seems to me that Windows still cannot handle file/folder names longer than 259 characters. What Long Path Fixer is doing - please correct me if I am wrong - is that it makes Windows able to Copy, Move, Rename and Delete files and folders with path names taking up 260 characters or longer, but it does not make Explorer able to handle them as normal files/folders; They are still not accepted as valid file/folder names if they are longer than 259 characters - but now Explorer is just able to Copy, Move, Rename and Delete them! This is merely theory to me, I have not tried to test it, but I think 259 will still be the valid limit in Explorer.

New Max length of long file names?
xplorer² now supports path with lengths of up to 32768 letters. That should cover the most verbose file organization cabinet!

^ not just xplorer². The point of this thread is that from now on every man's Explorer has the same 32768 / 32767-limit:

Long Path Fixer
Copy, Move, Rename and Delete files and folders with Very Long Paths.

Got a "Path Too Long" error in Windows? Try this free utility for moving, copying, renaming and deleting files and folders with Very Long Paths. Why? Because the alternative (Long Path Tool) is shit payware by a shitty company that employs idiots to spam the entire internet about their crappy product.

What does it do? Simply put, Long Path Fixer enables you to "get at" files and folders that Windows Explorer refuses to reach, that is, anything with a path longer than the Windows API can handle (MAX_PATH: 259 actual characters). With Long Path Fixer, you can effortlessly manipulate files and folders with paths of up to 32,767 characters in length. No destination is "Too Long"!

Sometimes i don't want to update because the installer wants to install also other "things".

^because you are using the free version. Of course the pro version doesn't do that.

http://myactivity.google.com/ is the new place to go, if you want to have a look at what Google officially is recording of your data and behaviour. You can even delete it, they say.

---------------
Occasion:
I have not tried to check out the details, but ...:

The Danish consumer advisory organisation Tænk! has filed a lawsuit against Google for collecting and keeping personal, private data - which is not legal if the data goes beyond normal shopping / browsing behaviour. Further more Google is keeping the data "for ever", which also is not legal, once the purchase after some time is history only.

This was in Denmark. I don't know the relevant rules in 'your' country.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Vole Word to Website Professional
« Last post by Curt on February 12, 2017, 05:05 PM »
Life Time use + free major Upgrades on this Bits du Jour offer is merely $31.20.

I have never tried Vole Word to Website Pro. Three years ago I tested Sanwhole Vole Explorer, and it was still quite new and of very little interest to me. Version numbers might suggest a lot of improving has been done since then, but be aware that the first version was described this way: "Release records: 1,   18-Apr-2013   3.4.30418:  First release." This does of course not prevent improvements. Vole Windows Expedition is probably the replacement for Vole Explorer, and is now at version 3.57.7021. But as implied, I don't think this company ever had a version 1 or 2 or 3.0

... Thanks for the Dump List of add-ons. I see several have been made incompatible by Firefox signing rules. That is one of the things that is driving me away from Firefox.

The homepage for one of my favourite add-ons for Firefox is showing these words by the author:

About this Add-on
This add-on will stop working when Firefox 57 arrives in November 2017 and Mozilla drops support for XUL / XPCOM / legacy add-ons. It should still work on Firefox 52 ESR until ESR moves to Firefox 59 ESR in 2018 (~Q2).

There is no "please port it" or "please add support for it" this time, because the entire add-on eco system changes and the technology behind this kind of add-on gets dropped without replacement.

Murder, she cried.

@MilesAhead^^yes, I am using CTR. For the sake of the case, I have just tried to remove it - reinstall it, click "restore default", uninstall it completely, reinstall it, change a lot of settings - but all to no avail, regarding the case of the missing Bookmarks Menu.

@Shades. Right now my pulse is a lot slower than six hours ago. I have Windows and all software programs on my Solid State C:Drive, but only a few documents. Every media files are on an external D-drive. So I will adapt the attitude that it all will go okay, no reason to panic. So far I have lost nothing - except that infamous Bookmarks Menu - so I will create a new backup (of add-ons and bookmarks) and totally remove Firefox, so I can start all over.

Any hardware related solution will have to wait until Christmas is over...
441
-yes, thank you, MilesAhead, I did that yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't think to tell about it, because 1) I am so frustrated with Bookmarks Menu not being both available and working, and because 2) I am unable to delete the old, empty bookmarks (they are (not) there, but won't go away!?), so I now have double of it all, except of what I ask for:

Dear Reader, Do 'you' have a Firefox > Titelbar > Bookmarks > Bookmarks Menu:tellme:  I  don't!
442
Hm... The situation is that my drive (120GB) really is too small for me; I am using 78% of the available space, but can easily use half a thousand percent more. So on one hand I might take up your idea, Shades, but on the other hand various test-programs all give praise to my, and I quote, excellent SSD drive. But, hey, they didn't foresee the fall of the Soviet Union, or even that a ginger knight would be the new trump card!

I recently lost my external almost new backup drive, and now this drive may have problems. Well, something might be wrong inside this old (year 2009) Dell Latitude Z 600 (http://www.pcworld.c...ude_z600_review.html) with 4GB RAM. I don't know what is wrong with this one, but it's far too often telling me to wait, "the program is not answering". I really want for once in my life to try to own a fast computer.

But for now I am not finally decided.

Anyway, this is hardly the reason Bookmarks Menu is gone.

Is Bookmarks Menu even a normal part of Firefox > Titelbar > Bookmarks or was it just something that I had from an extension, maybe?   :-\  Do 'you' have Bookmarks Menu?
:tellme:
443
Thank you, antekgla
Firefox's internal restore files were completely missing, except for the one from today.

Thank you, MilesAhead
I always use restore points, when I install (via Revo Pro)

but ... oops! Windows said half an hour ago that it had found an error in my disk, would I like to restart Windows, so the error could be fixed? Yes, please, I would like that, I said. What's that you're talking about, it said: Restore Points? No, you don't have any of such a thing. Not even one!

It looks as if I am in the market for new computer. Now!

I was trying Abelssoft AntiBrowserSpy, but got distracted from what I was doing. So when a corner of my brain said "Click Close!", my hand clicked "OK"! Sad story made short: When I reopened my Firefox 47.02 my Bookmarks > Bookmarks Menu was gone - and all the bookmarks are "empty"; they will tell the name of the Internet shortcut, but not the Internet address!!

The cripled, useless Bookmarks Menu is present in the left sidebar, and under Titelbar > Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks > Library:

BookmarksMenu.gif

but it is no longer to be found, where I am used to find it: under Bookmarks in the titelbar - like a normal old timer roll-down menu. But it isn't there:

TitelbarBookmarks.gif

^ it's completely gone! How on earth can that be?  :tellme:

I have of course tried this and that. Uninstalled and reinstalled several different versions of Firefox and removed and reinstalled AntiBrowserSpy. Searched my PC for bookmarks for Firefox. Nothing. Is Bookmarks Menu even a normal part of Firefox > Titelbar > Bookmarks or was it just something that I had from an extension, maybe?   :-\  Do 'you' have Bookmarks Menu?

---

Regarding Abelssoft AntiBrowserSpy: In all fairness I should say that a new version was launched just today, but my license literally ran out yesterday, which was why I was testing the spy in the first place.

General Software Discussion / Re: New PDF editor: FlexiPDF from SoftMaker
« Last post by Curt on February 05, 2017, 02:35 AM »
^ I guess you can have portability of a kind, if you say No to "Do you want to install the driver" etcetera, but I have of course not tested if you can do this with PlexiPdf. Being portable does normally not include leaving behind a driver and some context menu content, when removed. We would all shout this is not how portability should be done!

The license is for 3 PCs, so I guess that alone makes it difficult to give meaning to portability.

hoping FlexiPDF will have a portable version

Can the virtual feature "Print to PDF" even be possible in a portable version?
Also, one reason the program is easy to use is because it is part of the context menu.

I am just trying to say that I think it never will be portable.
