Living Room / Re: Electric shock from USB cable
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 11, 2013, 05:20 PM »
Guess I got a scare early on, though. Sometime before third grade, some of the older boys at the school I attended back then teased a younger kid to jump into a transformer station to fetch a DKK20 (or summat) coin - 20+ years ago, adjust coin currency etc. (though I guess you don't time-adjust a human life in the same way). So the 1 minute mourning and the story of the tiny little exit holes in his toe and his temple kept me somewhat fearful of electrical installations ever since.

Yikes! Nasty story.

Worrying too as I have a workshop with a power station transformer in a fenced enclosure immediately outside the window. I asked the electric board who was going to paint and repair my window since there are big signs saying "High Voltage - Danger of Death" all round the fence. The electric board told me to climb over the fence and paint the window myself!

SIW is very easy to use. There isn't a free version any more but you can find the last free build at:

www.oldversion.com/windows/siw/

That appears to be build 0916, (Sep 16), a later version could be available at PortableApps, 1029l (Oct 29).

The last Home Edition one from the SIW website is even later, 1029r, but it needs to be installed and comes with OpenCandy.

FWIW the portable apps version works just fine - extract the archive and then just double click SIW in the extracted folder.

If we had a "fair" trade, we would tax the hell out of the Chinese made products just the same way they do to our products.

WTO = Free Trade = The right of US and EU companies to exploit poor b*****s in the Far East.

Fair trade will me $90 a week for US workers - likely to happen? Probably at some point.

Somewhat schizophrenic article!

I want to buy an iPad mini but they're crap, so I bought a Nexus (which is fantastic) but I'll dump it when Apple bring out the next iPad mini if they make it more like the Nexus ?

Fair summary? WTF !!!

Just misread the thread title as "God writing program for the iPad?" and thought that's some marketing!!!!

Who knows? Assuming we're not alone, there's also the chance we may finally meet somebody really interesting to talk to.

Hmmm - but would they find us interesting enough to talk too - or would we be their equivalent of primordial ooze  :-\

Xara can export Illustrator and EPS file formats (never used it so I don't know what the fidelity is like).

I agree that Xara is a little schizophrenic these days but the basis of the package is, and always has been, vectors - right back to its origins as ArtWprks on the Acorn RiscOS platform (yes I had a copy).

The schizophrenia comes from adding in photoshop type functions (including support for PS plugins!) and web design. You can however simply ignore those and just concentrate on vectors.

When you put that on the table for comparison, space suddenly has a lot more reason to be visited. We won't need to worry about the Chinese taking over when we can divebomb them from space, and have colonies on other planets to support ourselves with if they decide to nuke the mainland.

Both result in the same thing though- workers being employed building these vessels, researchers being employed developing the designs further, an all kinds of industries growing up around the demand and spinoff products they will yield.

LOL - put like that it is a great idea - but how many of the components will be sourced from China - most of the electronics I would guess.

Was watching a video about the recent Mars lander - that is an awesome bit of technology and the landing technique stunning!

What about Xara Designer Pro as a competitor to Illustrator?

Blindingly fast and easy to use with lots of native import options (including Freehand 3).

Yep I can understand that - having said that I don't use it and have never come across a client that even knew it existed.

Bitlocker is a different matter - but then I have only rarely found anyone with hardware compatible with bitlocker.

Personally I wouldn't trust MS encryption of my files. I am sure when it works it is great but there are too many times where you have FS issues on laptops and I wouldn't be compfortable that the system would be retrievable in the even of a minor hiccup.

If my computer is basically sitting on my desk at home I don't really see a password as necessary or desirable. At best it is very minor inconvenience for a thief. Up to windows 7 I can remove a user based password within about 1 minute. I presume a local account in Windows 9 will do the same.

Can someone explain the point of the lock screen? It is just something annoying to drag out of the way when you switch on. Does is actually serve any useful purpose at all?
444
Note - initially I was also thinking upgrades but forgot that Adobe doesnt offer upgrades once the software is a couple of numbers back, so, as said by various people above, the subscription model is really what's on offer.

Actually they do - I have CS3 and I can still buy an upgrade to CS6 if I really want to.

Much as I hate the idea of subscription software it sort of makes a lot of sense with Adobe if you use one of the big suites. If you buy even alternate versions it is still likely to work out cheaper subscribing. Persoanlly I think I will stick with CS3 until Windows 9 breaks it!

+1
let's face it - we are the consumer - with the influence ;)
It can unfortunately be hard to find information, but if people express an interest and follow up on any info that is out there, things will get better.

I know I've avoided and supported products depending on their reputation with regard to their factories.

Let's face it anyone reading this (including me) is probably using at least one component (probably a lot more) that is a product of a Chinese (or other Far Eastern) sweatshop in the computer(s), phone(s) or tablet(s) they use.

I seem to be booting straight to the desktop using Start8 but I still have to see the silly (and completely pointless) "Lock Screen" and either log in to an email address or enter a Pin.

Does anyone know a way to by pass the Lock Screen and mandatory login so I switch on and it goes straight to the desktop?

Note CS2 isn't compatible (at least officially) with Vista or later.

I'm still using Photoshop from CS3 on Win7 x64 so hopefully CS2 will still run ok.

CS3 is fully Windows 7 compat - CS2 isn't

My experience of Serif is they have some good apps but once you are on their mailing list you get mail by post, phone calls and a torrent of email crap - almost entirely unrelated to products you use. They are a total PITA to get rid of.

My phone is set to ring only once when someone calls so it is really easy to miss it or ignore it  :-*

I mostly use my mobile to pick up calls left on my home phone but I don't do that very often.
