Living Room / Re: 2009/May/31 - DC/IOSx02 - DC Meetup Berlin, Germany
« Last post by housetier on May 06, 2009, 04:14 PM »
I took a few pictures with my cell phone. This is the first time, I actually make use of the camera!

The six mugs (the seventh is in the sink, to be washed):

I rotated the the mugs so we can get a nice around view:

The mugs arrived last week and are phe-nom-en-al! Each of the mugs is huge, so it can hold a lot of your favorite tea or coffee.

What makes them unique though is the picture that goes around on the outside: it is a mashup of Cody flying into space and the logo from c-base.

Living Room / Re: The Hunt For Gollum - 40 Min. Fan-Made Movie

The releases I found were re-encodes of the flash version.

Here's to hoping The Hunt for Gollum won't be treated like Damnatus...

I'll wait until they release a proper version via bittorrent. Flash usually gives me problems with synchronization of audio and video. I want to watch it with my most favorite, reliable media player and not with the my most disliked, proprietary browser plug-in...

General Software Discussion / Re: Searching For Software Programs

I believe our forum search works quite well... You could get a few keywords from that website you mentioned and search the whole DC forum for those keywords. If we talked about it in the past, you are bound to find it :)

a captivating story! are you writer?

sadly I know nothing about fixing that issue...

thanks for the hints, kartal

I looked at the page and even searched for "calendar", but scriptcopy did not show adequate results.

If you use pida, you get vim and a python shell: http://pida.co.uk/

Use text-only browsers, email, etc... ! the only way!

Hmm I wonder if I could read my email with lynx using a web interface that does server-side pdf2txt... That would be very difficult to exploit I assume.

Living Room / Re: how to improve DC's usability: the stackOverflow model
« Last post by housetier on April 30, 2009, 02:43 PM »
I would like to see support for markdown or textile markup languages. I find both of them particularly easy to use, unlike bbcode. Also, I use textile on my website and it has served me well.

The ignore feature is underway, but its different from stackoverflow's one.

I am absolutely against showing members' credit amount or karma level. I wish we wouldn't show post count either.

Living Room / Re: browser use - frame frustrations
« Last post by housetier on April 30, 2009, 02:35 PM »
well I am sure what there is to accomplish...

If I open a link from their navigation menu in a new tab I can easily bookmark the page; not that I want to.

There is no way around those bloody frames, unless the webmaster decides to do without those nasty frames.

I MUST say this: I wonder if vim can do this... :)

Living Room / Re: Newsmap - Tree Map View of Google News

newsmap looks neat but I feel overwhelmed by it.

Also it took me a while to figure out how the customization thing works. It works different from my newsreader, so it will take time getting accustomed to it. It surely looks more colorful than newsbeuter.

Living Room / wanted: google-like but google-free calendar software
« Last post by housetier on April 30, 2009, 12:25 PM »
I am looking for a calendar software for my club, c-base. So far I have been using google calendar and someone else pulled its feed, added further items and republished it using phpcalendar. This is very messy and also we rely on google too much. Also I cannot control our official calendar, so when I update "my" calendar in google it can take a week until the rest of the world knows about it, this is no longer tolerable.

So I am looking for a software that
  • runs on our server (php, python, perl, java...),
  • can show the events in a nice manner (maybe popups or so for further information, images),
  • lets my collegue manage the event with his thunderbird thingie,
  • offers an interface that makes it easy to manage recurring dates,
  • offers different categories for events

There is probably more I want, but this is what I can think of right now. If the layout of its "web face" can be customized easily it's plus but not a must. I am not impressed with phpcalendar so far.

synfigstudio is in the universe repository, which means it is not supported, hence does not receive as much QA checking as the "Main" repository.

You should still file bug reports against this package though.

You attach images to posts here on this forum, so people don't have to click dubious links.

First you attach the image to a post, and then you can use it in that post choosing from "Link Inline Image" (counting starts at 1).

I use noscript all the time. I also have whitelisted a few sites (gmail, DC, c-base); most of the time I do not need to enable JS for a site. But if I need to enable it, I only do so temporarily.

In my case, startpanic.com did not reveal much (only itself) in my history. This could be because I use noscript or because I do not keep a history anymore: found out I didn't really need as I either know the urls or have them bookmarked.

Living Room / Re: Oracle Buys Sun - Your Thoughts?
« Last post by housetier on April 22, 2009, 09:07 AM »
- more developers of mysql will leave
- more marketing for virtualbox
- we will see oracle rebranding itself, to become "new"

Yes this is all vague, but so is the deal which has yet to be approved. And since oracle is such a large organization they'll probably change course every so often anyway, so my predictions are close to meaningless ;)

It's very hard for me to decide! I want a new design for my website and wanted to get inspiration from those designs. But there are so many good ideas, I find it difficult to choose :o

Nice find though :)

Site/Forum Features / Re: New DC Member Kit Stuff
« Last post by housetier on April 21, 2009, 04:38 PM »
I want a membership card of sorts. I'd be happy to produce one myself (print, laminate), but I am not very good with design. So, I prefer a ready-made one.

Stickers are dandy always. As a bookworm I'd love that earmark. Could we have something to put on a key chain in the future?

Well now it is a few years later and I want a Cody plushy!

Still, it would be quite a financial commitment - do we have the funds and do we want to spend it on plushies?
