Hi 4wd - thank you for the reply! I just exited Wizmouse and immediately lost all scrolling capability in IE 8 (at least, scrolling with the mouse wheel, that is). As soon as I restarted Wizmouse, scrolling returned...

BTW, Wizmouse is here.
427
This morning I awoke to a new reality - my scroll wheel mouse R-E-F-U-S-E-D to scroll in, as I eventually determined, any html window (ie any web browser, e-mail message formatted in html, etc.). It worked like a charm in all other applications that I tried it in. I tried three other mice, same result (Wacom Bamboo mouse, a Kennsington mobile mouse, and two Microsoft optical units, one wireless the other USB). Very consistent behaviour. I then spent hours disabling IE 8 and rebooting, re-enabling IE 8, messing endlessly with the Mouse applet in Control Panel, removing drivers for my main mouse (MS Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 v.2) and rebooting, uninstalling and re-installing MS Intellipoint 8, etc, etc, etc,...

Absolutely no f&@!#>]{ joy! The best I would get is a couple of seconds of normal operation and then all scrolling would disappear again OR the scroll wheel would either jump to the start of the page or the end.

Finally, about 30 minutes ago I installed Wizmouse and everything worked immediately. WTF?

I'm running Win 7 64-bit but live in a 32-bit browser. I did try both Firefox and Opera before determining that the problem is related to html pages.

Any thoughts? I'm happy enough with Wizmouse, but I'd rather not be running a separate process just to get scrolling in my browser!

EDIT: added "RESOLVED" to the title...

Just to answer a likely question: all you need to do is run the installer and a fully functional version of the software is installed - there are no license keys to request and there's no activation to be done before the end of the week, so you can download the file and archive it until you need it, if you wish. It looks pretty complete, but I have no use for it at the moment so I'm uninstalling it again!

Heh, heh, I finished the Hunger Games trilogy this weekend ("Hunger Games", "Catching Fire", "Mockinjay") and just finished "The Lost Hero". I'm almost done "Chorus Skating" as well... I got so caught up in the Hunger Games that I read them all first...

What to read next (other than The Criminal Event, though I've already read it cover to cover a couple of times)?

By any chance the "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" option is unchecked (disabled) for your Documents folder, Darwin?

Yes, it is. However, I haven't changed that setting in ages (that I can recall).
437
Following from my previous two posts... I *did* reset WS 4.0 by disabling it, rebooting, reenabling it, and then reindexing last night. It is certainly within the realm of possibility that it took this long for indexing to complete (rather than changing the setting that I referred to earlier)...

Marry the redhead, not the brunette...

Ouch! I trust your wife doesn't read this? Or is this a case of you married the brunette the first time and the redhead the second?

For myself, I'd quote Shakespeare: "To thine own self be true". That would cover high school, anyway...
439
That doesn't seem right. Turning that option on tells WDS to conduct full-text search for non-indexed files. If a document's content is found only when the option is on, IOW, it's not indexed.

I agree - as I said, counter-intuitive, but it worked...
440
Heh, heh - I traced the problem (and fixed it!) to a cleared radio button:

WindowsSearch.png

I had to enable the highlighted option and all is well... It's a bit counter-intuitive because a search now shows up ALL of my documents and they have clearly been indexed.
441
That's a significant difference !  :)

Yup  :)

On the downside, NOTHING I do will induce WS 4.0 to index my Documents. I've created a dummy docx document containing the single word "Grunties" and saved it on my desktop. WS 4.0. had it indexed and searchable within a minute (my user profile, including the desktop, are on a secondary partition). I moved it to my Documents folder on the same partition and it is gone, as far as WS is concerned the Documents folder simply does not exist. I'm losing my mind...

Ah yes, I'd fogotten about those locations... Hopefully, kalos won't have to go beyond options 1 or 2 from my post (I used to HATE having to mess around manually removing add-ins). The third option above often requires a fourth step, editing the registry...

Hi Kalos,

It's been a while since I had Office 2003 installed... However, there are two routes to uninstalling/disabling add-ins. I'd try them in this order:

1. Disable the add-in from within the parent program (like Acrobat). You'll need to make sure that NO Office programs are running, including Outlook. You MAY have to re-run the parent program's installer and either customize the installation or repair the installation. This is how I used to have to deal with Scansoft/Nuance's PDF Converter Pro plug-ins, for example.
2. If the above doesn't work, if I recall correctly, you need to go into each Office 2003 program and click on Tools and then look for an "add-ins" entry in the menu. You might have to go to Advanced Options (can't remember - I do remember that each program is slightly different, or at least Outlook is different) and then look for add-in entries. The add-ins themselves are COM add-ins and/or something like EXCEL add-in, POWERPOINT add-in, etc. They changed all this radically with Office 2007 and I've been using 2007/2010 for almost three years...

A third option, if you know the name of the add-in, is to search for them in the Office program directory. They're usually stored in folders, something like: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\ADDINS\" but there are other places as well, for example: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\STARTUP" and "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\XLSTART". Finally, some add-ins get installed into their own Program Files folders, so keep an eye out there, too. E.g. Acrobat add-in files *might* be in a folder nested in the Adobe folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobt...).

*I'd be VERY careful going the third option route above because you can wind up with references to deleted add-ins that remain in the Office application*

Hope this helps...

I just read your "thread" at the Oops "forum". (Quote marks are because their so-called forum is actually on Get Satisfaction, which IMO is not the best format for a user/support forum. Personal non-preference, I guess!  :)  )

Jim, you are not alone! I'm heading over there to read the thread now...

Well... that didn't work, but I really don't care that much (see above).

On a different note, my CPU temps were consistently in the 70-80 degree range with X1 installed, even if neither X1 nor anything else was active. I'm now seeing temps in the 30-60 degree range, depending on the load (currently my corse are at 26 C and 32 C reseptively). I'm thrilled

Well... concurrently I am reading:

The Lost Hero - Rick Riordan
Chorus Skating - Alan Dean Foste
The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

I love my ebook Reader  :-*

Wow! Mouser - you're inspiring! My entire house needs to be done - paint, mouldings, flooring - it's been over four years and I haven't done a thing. Looking at your beautiful cabinetry and shelving makes me want to get on with it

Anyway, that was a round-about way of saying AWESOME!

Thanks for the Archivarius advice.

What you could try for WDS 4 is simply... Rename the current index, and let WDS create another one... I'm pretty sure that would woork.

Thanks for the suggestion - I may give it a try. I'm realising that this isn't really that big an issue for me - I rarely, if ever, search for files by content anyway...
