Well, those Kickstarter backers sure seem surprised. But I don't know if any of them are here on DC, though.

General Software Discussion / OneNote is now free
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 17, 2014, 04:41 PM »
Today we’re excited to complete that story with three major developments:

OneNote for Mac is available for the first time and for free. With this, OneNote is now available on all the platforms you care about: PC, Mac, Windows tablets, Windows Phone, iPad, iPhone, Android and the Web. And they’re always in sync.

OneNote is now free everywhere including the Windows PC desktop and Mac version because we want everyone to be able to use it. Premium features are available to paid customers.

The OneNote service now provides a cloud API enabling any application to connect to it. This makes it easier than ever to capture ideas, information and inspirations from more applications and more places straight into OneNote, including:

  •    OneNote Clipper for saving web pages to OneNote
  •    [email protected] for emailing notes to OneNote
  •    Office Lens for capturing documents and whiteboards with your Windows Phone
  •    Sending blog and news articles to OneNote from Feedly, News360 and Weave
  •    Easy document scanning to OneNote with Brother, Doxie Go, Epson, and Neat
  •    Writing notes with pen and paper and sending them to OneNote with Livescribe
  •    Mobile document scanning to OneNote with Genius Scan and JotNot
  •    Having your physical notebooks scanned into OneNote with Mod Notebooks
  •    Connecting your world to OneNote with IFTTT

Go to www.onenote.com to get OneNote for free for your Mac, PC or other devices, and try out the new OneNote service connected experiences.

There is still a paid version of OneNote if you need such "premium features like SharePoint support, version history, Outlook integration and so on".

So, is this an Evernote-killer or is it too late or not enough for that?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Malwarebytes FREE and PRO - Mini-Review.

Note: the 20% discount code doesn't seem to work anymore. Or more accurately, the order form I get when I try to purchase MBAM pro today (16 Mar 2014) doesnt have a place to enter a coupon code.

However, the $10 discount link mentioned in the "Malwarebytes is moving away from lifetime licenses" thread does still seem to work and represents a 40% discount:

I imagine that this discount link will no longer be valid once version 2.0 is released, but that's just a guess.

General Software Discussion / Re: Lazarus 1.2 released
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 17, 2014, 12:33 AM »
If you want to do 64-bit programming with Lazarus 1.2, be sure to read the README.txt file(s) in the SourceForge download folder - there's important information in them regarding add-ons that may to be installed and remaining issues with SEH on 64-bit binaries that might be built with Lazarus 1.2.

Those README.txt files in the SourceForge download folders don't seem to get put on your local system by the installer package.

Or you could click on the image in the OP  ;)

Sorry, sometimes I'm clueless - I didn't notice that the image was a clickable link.  I just saw the OzBargain link, and that the link to the deal on OzBargains's page was yet another indirect link...

Started discussing this about six months ago, here:  https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=36182.0

I missed that - I even searched for "jv16" before posting this and saw that thread, but I guess I stopped reading when I saw that the thread was about the odd request for monetary support to publish a report.  Looks like I should have kept scrolling down the page...

Macecraft has an Indiegogo fundraiser that has a target of $100K - if they meet the target, they have committed to releasing the source to jv16 Powertools under the GPL.  If the fundraiser meets some higher targets, they'll release under a more liberal open source license.

I'm not sure what to think about this exactly.  Interesting, if nothing else.

I haven't been a fan of registry cleaners for a long while now (and I *think* that's what jv16 Powertools' main function is), but I guess a quality open source package would be a good thing.

If I correctly understand all the updates they've posted, a $10 pledge will get you a jv16 license immediately, so you can consider it a sale of sorts.

But be aware!  This crowdsource fundraiser will immediately charge you for a pledge, even if the goal is never met.  I'm not very experienced with these things, but it was my understanding that the usual rule was that pledges didn't get charged unless the goal was met.

At the moment, they stand at $37K of the $100K goal, with 11 days remaining.

All I can say concretely is that MBAM significantly helped to remove some malware - Conduit Search Protect - that got onto my wife's machine.  Technically, Search Protect is a "potentially unwanted program", but it's malware in my eyes since it actively attempts to prevent being uninstalled.

It's possible that the real-time aspect provided by MBAM Pro wasn't necessary for this - note that Search Protect got on the machine while MBAM Pro was running.

As an aside, a recent evaluation of Webroot SecureAnywhere that I did showed that product was effective in blocking Search Protect from getting on the machine in the first place.  I hope to write up some of my findings of that evaluation sometime soon.

Just a bump in case there are any procrastinators. It looks like there are about 2 weeks left to purchase lifetime licenses:

We are nearing the completion of our beta test for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0. Below please find the change log for the release candidate. If all goes well, this build will be going live in about 2 weeks.

(see first post of this thread for a link to a 40% discount)

About once a year I have a special sale that most people think is crazy and I swear I’ll never do it again. This month I have a good reason to try to have more people protected by WinPatrol.

For long weekend I’m making a one system lifetime upgrade license to WinPatrol PLUS available for $2.00. Our full family pack lifetime license normally $49.95 can also be purchased for $10.00.  Sale ends Monday night at midnight EST.

Just to clarify - the 40% discount for Opus 9 -> 10 was available for more than 2 years after release, and it then dropped to 30%.

Thanks for coming to set those details straight.

General Software Discussion / Slickedit prevails againt patent troll
« Last post by mwb1100 on March 05, 2014, 01:50 PM »
It's nice to hear a story of someone successfully standing up against one of these extortion attempts:

In an unusual turn of events, after more than a year of litigation Uniloc USA, Inc. asked the Court to dismiss its own lawsuit against SlickEdit, Inc.  This came a week after the court held a three-hour Markman hearing on February 13, 2014 in which SlickEdit argued that Uniloc’s patent covered far less than what Uniloc was claiming.

I, for one, am against this "be careful what you say or our discounts will go away" mentality.

I agree - everyone should keep in mind that we would all welcome a correction about anything incorrect in this thread.   FWIW, I vaguely recall the upgrade discount for DO being larger when the upgrade was being done within a few months of a new release. In other words, my recollection agrees in general with what tomos posted, though I'm entirely unsure of the details (such as the time frame or the level of discount).

Because I didn't recall those details, I didn't post anything about it before. But since someone has characterized it as "untruths and garbage", I want to chime in now to say that my memory - which might be somewhat faulty, especially on details - agrees with what tomos posted.

And for what it's worth, I have a couple DO licenses, and I've upgraded in the past, but don't always upgrade when they have a major release.  It looks like I've paid for Dopus 6, 8, and 9.  Also, I'm not upset in any way - I knew what the general policy on DO updates is and when they come out with a major new version I evaluate whether or not I want to spend the money on the upgrade,.

Interesting - it's amazing the amount of investment that's been made on that infrastructure.

Also, I wonder why Madagascar gets a close-up map shot?

For XYplorer you can configure it to use a 'custom copy' handler so it doesn't use the Windows shell:

Tools/Configure/File Operations - check "Use Custom Copy"

Then click the "Configure..." button and there are several settings on how to handle various problems. Depending on exactly how you want it to work, you might need to change:

  - On name collisions
  - On failures
  - Verification
  - Rename folders on collision
  - Ask before overwriting read-only files

You can also configure XYplorer to use FastCopy or TeraCopy - see the help for Tools/Configure/File Operations/External Copy handlers.

This will be a nice addition - I've wondered why more diff tools don't do this.

New View Patch command shows diff/patch files as a text comparison.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQRL (Secure Quick Reliable Login)
« Last post by mwb1100 on February 23, 2014, 02:22 PM »
f someone does a SQL injection attack on a corporate db that allows them to dump the user table containing name, address, CC, security question responses, etc. ...What actual value does the password column have??

The value is that the person who dumped the database doesn't get passwords.

Just because a proposal doesn't fix every problem doesn't mean it has no value.

I agree that fixing the password storage problem doesn't necessarily fix stolen databases with CC data.  However, it does fix the problem of a password database being stolen from a 'low value' site (such as one that doesn't store CC data) to be used as a userid/password database against high value sites.  For example, using a password database stolen from a simple forum to be used as way to possibly gain access against banking site (because users tend to use the same password for multiple sites).

As far as the zip code entry at gas stations - I don't know how effective it is. But in the area that I live in there must be more than 40 zipcodes - I imagine that if the system detects someone trying to guess zipcodes for a particular card a security flag must get raised at some point that disables the card. But I'm just guessing.

quietly snatching the info off someone's phone,  where passwords have to be rather noisily beaten out of someone.

Currently passwords are quietly snatched off of servers - by the millions at a time.  Something needs to change (not that I'm sure that SQRL will or should be that change).

As far as quietly snatching something off a phone, the idea is that the SQRL key on the phone will be protected by a password so there will still need to be a noisy beating to steal the SQRL key off the phone.  What the SQRL protocol changes as far as web authentication goes is that the password never has to be sent anywhere else.

Usually how keys for security software works is...

If that's true in this case, then this is basically an offer for a free 3 PC-1 Year BitDefender AV Pro license.  Still up for grabs.

Someone take me up on this - I hate paying for stuff that never gets used (even if I didn't pay all that much - it was a $10 deal).

There's been some positive statements about Bitdefender in this thread... I have an old, unused key for BitDefender AntiVirus Pro 2011 (3 PCs, 1 year). I have no idea how well it'll work today, but I think there's a decent chance that it will still work with a 2011 install (I can provide direct download links to the 2011 installer from bitdefender.com's servers).  I have no idea how their upgrade policy works, but I suppose there's a small chance that you'd be able to get a 2011 install upgraded to 2014 for minimal charge or maybe even free.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in the key, just PM me (no promises provided about whether the key will be at all useful).
