Fantastic listing of text editing for multiple topics such as basic note taking and programming.

...I started thinking about all the services I’ve used for taking notes and thought it would be a good idea to share them with you and while I’m at it, to make a list of any others that I find. Now, when it comes to note taking, I personally look for quick and simple. If I have something on my mind, I don’t want to go through some advanced system and climb a mountain just to save a note for myself. There won’t be all the note taking tools out there on my list, but ones that I feel get the job done well...

Here is an article from an online, peer-reviewed journal that discusses motivating factors in open-source software.

The goal of the study on Fun and Software Development (FASD) is to precisely assess the importance that fun has as motivation for software developers to engage in open source projects. A survey carried out both under open source developers and programmers working in Swiss software companies yielded that the fun motive accounts for about 27 percent to 33 percent of open source developers’ motivation.
Fun is a pervasive feature of software development, not only for open source programmers but in the area of commercial software development too: Open source developers that are paid for their work are observed to be very motivated and prepared for future effort, especially if they enjoy their development time. Furthermore, the fun that programmers experience functions as a good proxy for their productivity. Therefore, employers that want to enhance the programmers’ productivity can safely invest in an environment of fun for developers in their company.

For those of you who have wanted fleas, this is your big chance.

How to Play Flea Circus
Click on the Start New Game button to begin playing
Once you have started the game you will be confronted with a screen split into 2 sections. The top section is the main playing area. After a short delay you will see the fleas fall out the block marked with an arrow and begin running backwards and forwards. You must guide them to the exit which looks like a doorway - to do this you must place blocks and ramps correctly on the screen. Do this by clicking on which of the 3 shapes at the bottom of the screen you want to place, then click on the screen where you want to put it. You can use as many of each block as you want, but there are a few limitations:
    * Blocks can only be placed on empty squares
    * Blocks cannot be placed where a flea is standing - Wait for it to move away.
    * A block cannot be removed again except when destroyed by bomb blocks
Blocks can be used to bridge gaps, or block ways you don't want the fleas to go...

Wow, you started out the Superfriends, that was certainly one of mine. There was Fantastic Four and Aquaman (not SeaMan and swallow from SouthPark). Herculoids was extremely cool. Space Ghost and SpiderMan were great. Later, Thundarr the Barbarian was good. Oh yes, and who can forget Land of the Lost and lovable Scooby Doo. Finally, there was Johny Quest.

Florence Devouard, chairwoman of the Wikimedia Foundation, has touched off a tempest with her suggestion in a talk at the Lift07 conference that Wikipedia has funding for only another quarter and "might disappear" if donations don't pick up.
Dire stuff ... if true.
According to this post by media producer Philippe Mottaz, Devouard told the audience: "At this point, Wikipedia has the financial resources to run its servers for about 3 to 4 months...

Here's an informative discussion of why AJAX is preferred for this issue.

Several of Bruce Tate’s books focused on the flaws in Java and the need to let go of some of the ideas that haven’t worked out. And blogs like this and this have been appearing more frequently. And of course there’s Steve Jobs now-famous quote (referring to the iPhone): “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
This backlash has only been necessary because of Sun’s death grip on the idea of ubiquitous, omniscient Java. It was admirable once, but a language only evolves if its designers and advocates can acknowledge problems. Pretending that a language is successful in places where it’s not is just denial.
Some adaptations have occurred. Finally admitting that EJBs have cost the world enormously, the EJB3 team...

Iconize Textlinks with CSS
Where will this link take me?

Links are fun, but sometimes we don't know where they take us. With this little CSS technique a user can identify a link by it's icon. This whole thing was inspired by the "Showing Hyperlink Cues with CSS" article of Ask the CSS Guy.

The idea is pretty simple, if a link points to a .pdf file, we show the .pdf icon after the link.

Here is everything you've always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask about power use.

Later on we'll cover how to measure the exact amount of electricity something uses. But the shortcut is to just look at the label! Nearly everything you can plug into the wall has a label that says how much electricity it uses. (It may be printed directly into the plastic or metal.) You may have to hunt for the label. It's often located on the bottom or side of the device, or possibly where the power cord enters the unit. If the device is powered with an AC/DC adapter, the electrical rating is usually listed on the adapter itself.

If the label only gives the number of amps and not the number of watts, then just multiply the amps by 120 to get the number of watts. (Amps x Volts = Watts, and most U.S. electricity is 120 volts. So a hot plate that uses 6 amps uses 6 x 120 = 720 watts...

Although I am not completely certain, the title of this book sounds more nightmarish than transcendent.

Stamping [a feature in Chandler that would allow users to transform one kind of data into another, like making an e-mail message into a calendar event] aimed to introduce a kind of productive ambiguity to the computer desktop that more closely mirrored the way people think. It was not a simple concept, even for the designers who'd invented it; for the developers who had to make it work, it was even trickier. Computer programs used silos and trees and similar unambiguous structures because they helped keep data organized and limited confusion. If an item belonged to one group, it did not belong to another; if it lived on one branch of a tree, it did not live on another...
