General Software Discussion / Re: Format NTFS from DOS!
« Last post by Eóin on October 01, 2010, 04:44 PM »
I know you don't want a 3rd party solution, but really, one of the easiest ways to manipulate NTFS, outside of windows, is a Linux live cd.

Following on from Carol's suggestion to use IMAP, you should find the info and links in this StackOverflow question very helpful- Accessing Imap in C#?

I tried a quick test with an application here, it started the app as Admin only if I ticked the "Run with highest privileges" box.

That might help.

Living Room / Re: Am I the only one who finds the new Apps-based world boring?
« Last post by Eóin on September 29, 2010, 03:46 PM »
There are many types of computer user, but there are two key ones for this issue; the content producer and the content consumer. The producers will always need a laptop or desktop, you really can't even write blog posts properly on an iPad, never mind a smart phone. Consumers only need internet and a touchscreen. The new 'app' revolution is aimed at the consumers, and that makes perfect sense, the vast vast vast majority of people are consumers only.

But the thing is, fortunately, I haven't yet seen the world forget about the producers. So long as the tools we need continue to be made, we'll continue to buy them, and the market for them will remain I believe. Sure we don't get 100% of the IT giants attention any more, but we don't need it, and it would be arrogant to think we even deserve it. The market has got more varied, that's all.

Yes, the task scheduler started it with the current user´s account, which has admin rights.

But is UAC coming into play? Chances are it's not actually getting admin rights.

So if a law was made to require allowing competing stores on any device, this nonsense will end.

The locked in 'app store' concept is new, I firmly believe it will come to an end in due course, probably out of anti-competitive or anti-monopoly laws.

In the mean time, I'll just continue to use the systems which are still free.

I'm probably guilty of what superboyac describes. The truth is though I just naturally tend to give the answers that I like to receive, i.e. short and sweet.

I guess I find a forum like this invaluable for pointing you to that little gem of an app which you might not find in a Google search, the software you'll only come across through word of mouth. Beyond that the tech specs for the application tend to be of most interest to me.

Software patents can work, but at the moment they're a farce. That number analogy doesn't really hold water though.

I found Dia to be pretty nice for such tasks. Inkscape also works well but is overkill in this case, I would think.

I've never had experience of ring-back tones, in fact I never knew such a thing existsed before now. But your little rant has completely convinced me that they are pure evil :D

Long may their absence from my life continue ;)

I feel ashamed now that I own a set of buckyballs :(

The final point about coating is very true, after making an interesting shape with the buckyballs I took a picture and was instantly disappointed by the look of the individual spheres.

Having your choice of OS would be fantastic, but I think phone hardware isn't standardized enough yet.

That said, if you go the unsupported, void your warranty approach, it's amazing to see what the hackers at xda-developers can do with HTC's phones. They've ported various WM versions and Android to all sorts of models.

I've played, and loved, all but IV, just never got around to that last one. I've promised myself I'll get V after I meet a work deadline in early November.

In the mean time, I'd be eager to hear some peoples experiences with it

I'm running the new Iron too and loving it. It seems to have finally incorporated the fix for image loading timeouts, for me at least!

Actually in Europe, where Nokia are based of course, cellphones aren't tied to network. Though it usually cost more because no one is subsiding the cost of the phone. Also most networks carry all the popular phones so you have choice when looking for a subsidized one too.

I believe the application's icon has is simply the first icon in it's resources, so actually he did set the custom icon as the app one.

In Windows Seven it shows up easily.  They must have improved the scrollbar draw when it's glass.

Indeed they did! This was why it didn't work pre Win7.

« Last post by Eóin on September 19, 2010, 08:27 AM »
Nope. It can only list installed fonts. I can't install fonts. Not all of them at once anyway. Installing a thousand at a time, listing them, and unistalling them is a long ordeal.

It can list fonts from a folder and install them individually at least. But not sure about bulk operations.

General Software Discussion / Re: What HTML5 can do -- cool site
« Last post by Eóin on September 16, 2010, 07:24 PM »
Without trying to sound like too much of an MS apologist... I do believe for the time being HTML5 is not going to be the great unifier of the web, it'll be it's divider.

The problem is, that until HTML5 implementations near completion, the subsets of features supported will be too disconnected. This will mean web developers will be forced to target one or two browsers, effectively creating vendor lock-ins themselves.

Two cool betas out this week, Internet Explorer 9 and Flash Player 10.1 64bit.

Haven't tried them myself too much, only just installed a short bit ago. But everything I have tried works fine.

They're worth giving a test drive! P.S. sorry for the non-standard theme in the screenshot

Living Room / Re: How to understand all the Intel chip types?
« Last post by Eóin on September 16, 2010, 05:05 AM »
The i's are the ones to go for. i3 is entry, i5 for powerusers and i7 mainly aimed at server/HPC.

Core 2 was an older architecture, while the Duo means dual core. There were also Core 2 Quads.

Atoms are for lowpower applications such as netbooks, Centrino's are more powerful and geared towards laptops.

It's a bit confusing alright, but wikipedia is very helpful.
