Didn't do much for my three subscriptions.

Hopefully page2RSS will do better.

Did they ever tell you about the definition they give to mutineers?
Ya, they call them ship disturbers! ;)

Have to try that four letter word.   ;D

Thanks MerleOne for elucidating what i've been thinking too.

Guess the ol' principle "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is more than applicable in this area.

Confused...

It's been doing it again (shutting down instead of standby) and i can't blame SystemMechanic this time nor any other registry tweaker as i have done basically nothing in that area.   :(

Could it be a kind of conflict with these programs running at the same time?

For the moment, i'm running Evernote and standby mode went well.

Now i'm hesitant to post anything more about this issue.

And yet, i can never recall having any issue with EN before. Sigh!

Actually, it started over again after running SystemMechanic.

So, since then i've re-installed my notebook (with my regular AV equipped with its' own firewall) but no SystemMechanic.
It's been doing fine after a few reboots so, i'm pretty sure its' SM.
I'm never too keen on doing registry restoration so i think i'll just drop this "tweaker" altogether.

Thanks for insisting wraith808.

Well, i un-installed Evernote and with Dropbox running, i couldn't go into "standby mode" at all (something it did before).
So, i uninstalled Dropbox too and rebooted.

Installed Evernote once more, had it running with no problems going into or coming out of standby mode.
So, i then decided to try latest Dropbox "experimental" from Betanews and it seems to be doing fne so far.
In fact, with both running, no problems.
What gives?
I can't figure this one out.
Besides, i have better things to do than to trouble the good folks here.
Guess i'll have to mozy on down to Dropbox and Evernote forums to let users who have similar issues know that it could be a conflict between these two programs or others too right? I also have Windows Essential Sync and other programs like FARR running.

@parkint,

I beg your pardon, but when either program is closed (not running in background), i don't have the "standby mode" issue at all!  :(

Living Room / Dropbox and Evernote problem
« Last post by dantheman on August 22, 2010, 08:33 AM »
Could a geek tell me why my computer "crashes" instead of going into "standby mode" whenever Dropbox or Evernote desktop apps are running?

When i click on standby, the computer shuts down (thus crashing) instead.

Does the fact that i use SystemMechanic have anything to do with this?
Perhaps it disables a Windows feature that should be running which would allow Evernote or Dropbox to run without issues.
But which feature is being disabled is beyond my understanding...

People have posted at Evernote's forum to no avail.

-Windows 7 basic edition.

Sajman,

You are probably 100% right about fidling around with the registry.
Problem is, if something you've modified goes unnoticed until you finally need it and don't remember when you modified it... how can you restore registry properly unless you're really sure you last "hacked" it? So much for backing up registry.
Never had problems with TuneUp Utilities either.

Why no AV?
Well, i find that my system was generally less responsive and scrolling through Windows Explorer or xplorer2 became definitely slower after installing it.
But just to prove me wrong!  :(
I just did a fresh install of my OS and neither of these things happened.

Hi,

There are previous threads, but seeing that those who talk about registry cleaners date back a while, i thought i'd drop a line or two about one specific shareware that i've personally purchased and used; namely and mostly about SYSTEM MECHANIC 9 (NOT PRO).

First of all, it seems to fix and tweak all kinds of things but doesn't really improve speed anywhere (browser or OS).
Secondly, with regards to Malwarebytes which was suggested on previous post, I've run it a few times on newly installed OS and it always finds two .txt files to remove. My OS backup disk was made from freshly installed system so i can't see where the culprits came from.

Running on Windows 7 (not Pro) with no AV or Firewall except for Micro$oft defaults and system is running just smoothly for the last three weeks.

As usual, Microsoft is always light years away from innovations on the web...

Indeed, it's not much of a big deal but it is a handy option for those who can afford their Office Suite.

Did i miss the page numbering feature ?

What's the Best? / Re: What's the best: Wiki Host?

PBwiki has survived over quite a span of changes.
As paid version i would say it is the best.

Free ? Well, there's always TiddlyWiki.
I like the fact you can save your data online / offline.

Ya. Someone recently told me about Wubi.

Guess you have to learn the hard way sometimes.  :-[

My LG notebook allows me to create a backup of the system.
I presume this means i can backup it up to a DVD.

Will this not backup the Ubuntu installed all over the partitions i've created or will it simply backup the default installation files needed for Windows 7 ?

I'd really like to send my notebook back to initial state and start all over.
Problem is, i don't have a backed up copy of OS yet.

Just came upon this small freeware: http://quotepad.info/

And! It doesn't need .Net Framework to work! Yes!

Indeed, i was quite surprised myself.

An excellent job!

My pleasure mydexter!

What's nice about this program is the fact that you don't have to index your system and it does the job quite fast. Choosing specific folders to look into helps even more.

Although the latest Copernic Desktop freeware version has greatly improved, i really like this long awaited update to Agent Ransack by MythicSoft. It's just lightweight and beautiful!

General Software Discussion / Re: Installing Linux over ME, is it possible?
« Last post by dantheman on February 21, 2010, 09:23 AM »
With DeepBurner i was able to make a good ISO copy of LinuxMint.
Although it failed to recognize my external monitor, it worked fine on my XP.
Much slower on ME (need a bit more RAM but do have minimum required) though.
I presume that a "hard" installation will make a big difference.

@Bamse,

Thanks for the reminder about CPU bit.
I usually try to remember to open and clean everything at least once a year.

Living Room / 1,000 Architects & Engineers Call for New 9/11 Investigation
« Last post by dantheman on February 20, 2010, 06:39 PM »
According to CBC.ca's Fifth Estate program last fall.
It is said that more and more Americans and Canadians have doubts regarding the events of 911.

Today, i fell upon this headline:
http://world911truth...w-911-investigation/

Seeing that "Coders" are architects in their own right, i thought you'd like to be aware of this happening and perhaps "digg" this story which is already listed.

Josh, i understand your point of view and it is good to be aware of these things.

After testing with a LiveCD, i'll be able to see with my own eyes if the desktop becomes more stable or not. As you know, crashing issues abound with ME and a Linux OS seems to be the only door to take at present time.

BTW, if someone has a similar experience, could they suggest the best free Linux version to try?

Thanks again folks for your input!

The liveCD suggestion has been retained and when i get a chance i'll give it a spin.

Then we'll take it from there.

Many programs no longer work with ME so the LINUX option will be an interesting one to consider if and when re-installation time comes around.

I don't mind giving tips to people who work with more "recent" OS like XP, but ME isn't really my cup of tea.
