Blue screens are always recorded in the event viewer. Check eventvwr.msc (start - run) and look under system. You will see a listing for bug check. The first hex code is the one you want. You can get more detail on the code from the windows debugging tools at microsoft.com

And if you want to find more information on an Event check out EventID.net (just made my blog yesterday - leave a comment if it helped).

If the blue screen occurs during the boot process you may want to check out BootVis and see if that gives you any clue.

Ah, I have finally gotten a totally automated version of Skrommel's awesome DelEmpty - I will add it into SystemCare. It is now 100% automatic, and will scan your entire C:\ drive for empty folders and delete them without interaction. Just watch the counter go by.

Isn't that kind of dangerous to do?  Seems like it wouldn't be a good idea for a novice computer user to go and delete empty folders.  What if its a special folder (like of the My folders) where a novice user wouldn't know how to rebuild it?

I know you have clauses to CYA but giving a novice user the ability to do something they wouldn't know could be harmful and it ends up hurting their system the responsibility would fall back on you.

If you are going to have such a feature make sure there is a confirmation box that explains what will occur and gives them the ability to back out.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: Will Google adverts make Google index DC?
« Last post by Veign on February 17, 2008, 01:26 PM »
Maybe, just maybe, 'we' could some kind of 'force' Google to index DC, if mouser would accept a Google advert on each page?

Using Adsense on pages does not in any way affect its placement in the index or the rate at which the domain is crawled.  The indexed pages are affected by on-page elements (content) and off page elements (backlinks and anchor text of backlinks).

If you want to force a page or domain into the index faster then getting a backlink from another page with a high PR will help.  Pages with PR's of 4 can get pages into the index in days and pages with a PR of 5 can get pages into the index in a matter of hours.

Google is in an always crawl, always update mode and the index is in constant flux (no more index updates like in the past).  This is the reason why high PR pages can get unknown's into the index faster - Google already knows about them and checks back for new content often and follows links on the page in a search for new content.

What about using the Summary tab on the right-click properties of a file?.

Before you order anything print one off at actual size and see if you can make out what it says in a short time (1-3 seconds) at a distance of around 15 feet or so.  If not then its too complex or the fonts are too small.

Simple is better with large fonts.

General Software Discussion / Any spell checker for rendered webpages from a browser
« Last post by Veign on February 13, 2008, 11:27 AM »
Have been looking for a spell checker that would work on a rendered webpage from within Firefox.  Anyone know of anything like this.  All the ones I have found worked from within forms.

Thanx.

Seconding PhpEdit that was mentioned by mouser and also adding Komodo Edit (free version).

I still use emEditor as my primary code editor (not really an IDE).

You really should link as the Author may want to track downloads and want to control the versions that are around.  By linking you will ensure that most current version is always downloaded.

whenever I am leaving my workstation/desk I always hit windows-l to make sure that my notebook is locked.

Funny thing is I could never remember that windows-l key command.  Thanx for that.

Renaming an application after it has been out in the wild for so long would be a big mistake.  The application have reviews and gained some trust out there.  Renaming them now would be a big mistake.

However, holding a naming contest for future applications would not be a bad idea.  I too suffer from a poor sense of naming applications and usually just settle on something since I hate wasting time on it.

5Gig Temp folder is Huge.

Do what a couple others pointed out and that's sort by date and remove all files/folders previous to today's date.

If you're still worried about the volume of files and that something may be useful then create a backup folder and move the files into it.  Reboot the computer and run apps for a few days to make sure there are no issues.

I agree with Josh.  Restore ALL the posts as it ruins the flow of threads they are in.

Truly a sad way to leave.  Burning bridges, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is never a good idea...

What I usually do is close all open applications and then dump the folder.  I have never had an issue in doing so.

Damn and WTF are NSFW?   That's a new one to me.  The graphs, although nice looking, are useless and skewed to the NSFW argument.  The more you try and convince us the more your losing credibility in your argument.

DC is a great forum and at this point I say put the tagging system on the back burner until things cool down.

Is DC safe for work?

I think the answer is clearly yes.

There are no naked pictures on DC forum or site.  You might find the occasional curse word here and there, and you may find a discussion of some technological issue relating to sexuality, but nothing that you wouldn't read in any newspaper or magazine.  There are probably a handful of posts on the forum in three years that refer to some sexually themed site, and link to them -- in such cases the links should clearly be marked as NSFW.

I think that's where this forum has found it's comfort zone, and it seems to be a reasonable approach, and I don't think we should try to change that.

Well put...

General tagging is perfectly fine with me as its something I'm used to because of its use in blogging.  But anything that starts to classify a member as someone to avoid because they haven't taken a pledge or chooses to not tag their posts is something I would not want to see.

This is a two way street and *all* members must be willing to have an understanding of other peoples views. This is a forum, not a church.  We are all here to discuss topics on a common theme.  These discussion should be allowed in the natural way a person speaks without fear of some repercussions.  Its the varying personalities of the members that makes a forum.  Try and do anything that tags members, censors posts, blocks content or makes reading the forum more difficult will only block theses personalties.  Any system that gets implemented should take this into account.

If this were my forum I would implement a general tagging system, modify the search to handle tags, add a filter to filter posts by tags and then create a post about tagging, how it works, recommended tags.  Then I would leave it alone.  Basically the forum would look and act as it does now to members who want it to.  (see my post above about a demo of a general tagging system for SMF)

edited to add: I would not go back and tag previous posts.

I think tagging should be on a voluntary basis by the topic starter.  The only exception should be given to mouser, since its his website, to add a tag if a topic drifts too far away.

EDIT: OK, just I expected it to be. It's pretty simple, working like most tagging systems used out there, but it works pretty good. Zero-learning curve for those wishing to use it, and it does not get in the way for those who didn't drink the kool-aid ;). Apart from the problem I pinpointed, I'd say we could use this.

Pretty standard and as Mouser has pointed out wanting a tagging system that can be used for many things beyond the NSFW (which creating an entire system just for that doesn't make much sense).

A system like this could be built to filter, identify, mark, search or whatever based on tags.
