I will defer my write in vote for a mobile device style sheet until that "which cms to use" thread has concluded then. :)

Developer's Corner / Re: SWF 2 EXE "open source" release help, please
« Last post by daddydave on June 02, 2011, 04:58 AM »
I am not in any way an Open Source expert but according to the Open Source Initiative:

8. License Must Not Be Specific to a Product

The rights attached to the program must not depend on the program's being part of a particular software distribution. If the program is extracted from that distribution and used or distributed within the terms of the program's license, all parties to whom the program is redistributed should have the same rights as those that are granted in conjunction with the original software distribution.

Rationale: This clause forecloses yet another class of license traps

This seems to prevent you from restricting distribution of the software, if you release it as open source. The safest thing does seem to be to write your own license.

Well I know one TV producer, a self-employed baker and a retiree, and maybe even a butcher or candlestick maker or two who may have read the article, now have an education on why "free wi-fi" should be avoided at all costs. This is a hard message to get out there, articles like this help just a little.

To avoid a name that age limits it, how about Little Voice Commander
-Stoic Joker (May 13, 2011, 03:53 PM)

The nice thing about this name is that is conveys the child is actually giving orders.

I suppose this is old news, but it was new to me. The Windows Mobile version of Pocket Informant (not to be confused with the Windows Phone version) is now free, and unsupported (but it does have a thick PDF manual).

Given the description of the intended audience as "just learning to start to speak" and since children try to speak long before they toddle, that would seem to rule out any variation of "toddle" or "toddler" in the name.

Well, I just noticed "toddler" in the subject line so never mind.

I agree this is nuts, Download Squad was one of my favorite tech reads. It is infinitely more valuable than the online tabloid they bought. Will Gizmodo, the hardware equivalent of Download Squad in some ways and also an AOL property, be next?

PuffHo having a tech section -- now that's a scary thought.

Clicking on the triangle in the lower left for pausing and dragging the rectangle found to the triangle's right seemed to work for here for advancing / rewinding.
 (see attachment in previous post)
FWIW, this was with Firefox 4.0.1.

Ha! Yeah I see it now. I didn't scroll down, it must have been too early in the day  :-[

I watched the first one, it is very well done and makes me want to start using it seriously. One minor quibble, is it just me or is there no way to pause or rewind the video?

Living Room / Choosing what movie to watch
« Last post by daddydave on January 29, 2011, 09:50 AM »
For this poll, family can also mean any group of people you watch movies with (although I would expect a group of friends to be more individualistic than a family). I am curious about other people's movie watching habits. Based on the assumptions made by movie tracking software, movie watching seems to be treated as purely an individual activity. For example, often there is a "wish" toggle showing someone wishes to watch the movie. But not a way to specify if it is one you alone want to watch, or one you want to watch with your spouse, or one you want to watch with the whole family. Sometimes you can work around this if the software is customizable enough, usually it isn't.

The idea is that there are people who just want to watch a movie, but have no idea what movie to watch, so someone else falls into the role of deciding what movie to watch.

Also, I am thinking mainly of movies watched at home. If you watch a movie at a movie theatre, you are limited to the choices there and it tends to be an impulse decision I think, so there is probably not much of a perceived reason to keep a list.

A bit off topic but that reminded me of something.

Back in the day (the 1980's), I remember reading in a magazine that it was a good idea to print a list of all the files on your computer and put them on the wall for reference. Imagine doing that today!

I'm looking forward to the release regardless. Imagine all the good ideas people were thinking of while OpenOffice was stagnating. And I do like the idea of a sidebar.

Very nice work. What do you think about making "Minimize to tray on close" a default? For most programs, I hate when they do that, but for keyboard replacement programs, I think it is standard and expected. (Same to some extent for "Run when Windows starts")

EDIT: I should have said typing replacement programs.

Hasn't someone else here done a similar program also?  Great to have several options.

Given the choice of XP on Linux or XP on Mac, I would choose to run 64 bit Windows 7 natively. The more I use Windows 7, the more I despise XP anyway. If you are running this on a work machine, work machines in my world are notoriously slow anyway, why slow it down further?

Eww, the first screenshots remind me of Quicktime Player. I hope that is a mockup for the Mac version.

UPDATED: or Linux version. Although in that case, I'm sure there would be a "Windows look" theme.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 TaskDaddy Missing/Future Features Poll
« Last post by daddydave on January 20, 2011, 05:11 AM »
in my brief test, if outlook wasn't running the task seemed not to be added, and there was no error.
That would be a bug then. It is supposed to add the task regardless. Now, when I was adding hundreds of tasks at a time from the tester, I got the impression that  sometimes it took a while for Outlook to catch up and show all the tasks that had been added.

confirmation is not so important IFF one could be very very convinced that an error would be reported, and the user RE-presented with their text if it failed to add.

It should display an error, I can't remember if it re-presents it, I will check that. Thanks for the feedback.

« Last post by daddydave on January 20, 2011, 04:41 AM »
sorry just saw this now.  although i am not an outlook user, during my screencast it seems reallly clear to me that on the very very top of your todo list should be a nice confirmation that the item was actually added, and some handling of the case when outlook was not running.  i would absolutely do that before anything else, or you could get some irate users who thought they added things that never get added.

Good points. What kind of confirmation would be good, without being too intrusive? As for "some handling of the case when outlook was not running," in my tests, Outlook didn't need to be running. If Outlook is not installed at all, it is supposed to give the error "Unable to open Microsoft Outlook object," which admittedly could be worded a little better. I admit I didn't actually test it on a machine that doesn't have Outlook on it, but I will now.

Confirmations and user friendly dates are both implying a config file to me, so I'd better get started on that, too.

An update: I am mostly happy with the iPod Touch, but not really found my groove in regard to Outlook tasks. I am struggling to implement David Allen's GTD as well, but I can't really find all the features I want in one app, and I have paid for a few different apps.

One nice thing about Apple is that you don't have to buy an iOS phone to see the contents of the app store. Unlike Google's Android. There are alternative app stores you can search and read reviews at, but not Android Market itself. So it was easier to research and conclude that Apple was indeed where the apps were.

iOS also seems to be where developers have been aiming first before bringing out their Android apps. Eventually the momentum will swing to Android, although I don't expect the PIM situation to be much better there, maybe I am too picky. This is my third PDA (had a Palm, and a Dell Axim before) and in each case I made the decision the same way: go to the OS where the apps are. I see a few developers starting to put their best work into their Android apps (Evernote for example) so I see the momentum swinging yet again

Coincidentally, two of my online accounts, gmail and gawker got compromised since I got the ipod touch, just as I was starting to feel I was being paranoid about having data in the cloud, I now realize I wasn't paranoid enough. The Gmail thing was weird, I avoid all the "free wi-fi" like Ebola and I only connected to my home wireless network,. However I hate all the iOS apps that have you put your Google account information in the settings, now all my apps are suspect. For the everyday individual who interacts with the web on a personal level, it seems that cloud security is all downhill from here.

One thing I wish I had considered was that the newer generations of iPod Touch have more memory to work with. I believe this is why Apple wisely disables multitasking on 2nd Generation devices. However, I feel I needed it and enabled it on my jailbroken device, just to be able to get back to the last several apps without having to go back to the launcher (springboard) or too much fiddling. Also I can see the amount of memory in the top status bar, thanks to another jailbreaking tweak. And if it gets too low, the device reboots and it takes forever for it to boot back up. However, the 3rd or 4th Generation weren't really at my ebay price point.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 TaskDaddy Missing/Future Features Poll
« Last post by daddydave on January 19, 2011, 07:24 PM »
Based on 10 interested voters, the top two most important features to add at this point are clearly recurring tasks and user friendly dates. I am puttering around in C++ a little bit but it is a bit overwhelming, I think I may slowly go ahead and trying to add those in AutoIt, and restart mouser's C++ lessons in the meantime so I am more comfortable with the language before I tackle the C++ port.

After getting my iPod Touch, I had some doubts as to whether I could keep tasks out of the cloud. I still am not satisfied with any of the solutions available really, but I think I have found my way back to Outlook tasks, having had two of my online accounts compromised since I last visited this thread. Funny how online security for the individual keeps going down as time goes on, but that's for another thread.

This reminded me of what the Personal Video Database forum has done recently. On their forum, they have created a Help board that uses a custom template that makes that board look like an online wiki. The intention is to make that board into the online help for the PVD program, I think with the idea that people might be too shy to edit the wiki directly but more likely to comment the article, then their comments can be incorporated into the main article. Like this forum, they are using the Simple Machines forum software.
