Living Room / Re: Forum Signature Spam: Let's discuss how to handle..

How about removing all the issues once and for all by being radical and just don't allow signatures if they upset people? Everyone can provide a URL link under their name (a little green globe) on the left. Why not say that if you want to link some where do it there. If you have more than one link you want to share you can set up a webpage with all your links in one place and give that pages as your one URL. There are plenty of free web hosting services out there with easy build pages.

An alternative and simple solution is to set up new user with the default setting of signatures turned off - it is then up to individuals if they want to view signatures?

Yes I agree - I bought FruityLoops a while back and I purchased - yes PURCHASED as an extra - lifetime upgrades.

I was smiling and feeling happy with things until the next version came out in two formss - guess what they changed the name from FruityLoops to "FruityLoops Studio" and "FruityLoops Producer" - and you guessed it these were not included in the lifetime upgrade because they were 'different products'. You could of course buy a life time upgrade extension to these new products (which looked in every way identical to the old version). I'm sorry ... if it looks like a dog, eats dog food, and barks it probably is a dog !!! Needless to say there were a lot of really pissed users - I seem to remember they finally relented. Now they just seem to release bug fixes and add most new features by adding plugins - which of course you have to purchase because they aren't part of the base product!

I agree MS says XP 32-bit supports PAE - but it obviously has problems doing so (according to ASUS). That was a direct quote from the ASUS manual.

The second article I quoted says that even with Vista you are limited to 4Gb (less Direct Memory IO device space requirements) and that Vista 32-bit imposes a default limit of 3.12Gb on available memory.

The article specifically says that the workaround to get the full 4Gb is to use a BIOS that supports memory remapping AND a 64-bit OS AND specific CPU types

If anyone is interested Xara are doing 25% off upgrades until 3rd October.

That means Xtreme Pro to 3.2 is $44

Doesn't answer the question why WinXP went from recognising 3Gb to 2Gb ?

Just reading my motherboard manual (ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe) and it says the following:

  • If you install four 1Gb memory modules, the system may detect less than 3Gb of total memory because of address space allocationfor other critical functions. This limitation applies to Windows XP 32-bit version operating system since it does not support PAE mode
  • If you use Windows XP 32-bit version operating system we recommend that you install less than 3Gb of total memory.

Seems to fly in the face of what MS says - but I guess what they are saying is that critical fundtions (such as other mapped memory from graphics cards etc) are removed from the 4Gb space.

Here is another article - this time for VISTA which is a bit clearer and supports that interpretation:

did I miss something here (?)
whats 14W?  smiley

to console myself for having bought such a monster (Acronis 11) I can point out that incremental backup is (hopefully) more of a space saver than Differential

I4W = Image For Windows (see about 5 posts up)

Differential backup is more space consuming - but then it is also more flexible - you only need to keep the base copy and any differential chunks you want to keep (you can delete any of the differential chunks and still have a coherent backup). The first differential backup should be the same as an incremental backup.

One of the confusing things with Acronis is that it only has one filetype (unless they have changed something) - this is really stupid as you can't identify which are the base, differential, incremental or file backup files from the extension or icon. They should have 4 separate file types.

In theory you can mix incremental and differential --- eg. you could

Day 1 Base ...
Day 2 Incremental
Day 3 Incremental
Day 4 Incremental
.
.
.
Day 7 Differential - then you can delete the increments.

Not sure if you can then continue to build increments followed by a further differential.

Trouble is you would have to be very careful what you deleted each time!

If you read the article it actually makes the case that "Apple Macs are a niche market" ... is that the get out clause?

I agree it would be stupid to apply this idea only to current Windows-type machines and there would be major lawsuits from manufacturer's (not to mention MS) if Apple was exempt.

The question is WHO would buy Apple hardware just to run Windows - they would have to be seriously deranged to pay that price for a Windows box! Do Linux distributions run on Apple hardware (never heard of anyone doing it)? If they run Windows I shouldn't think there is a problem - but again who would pay the premium for a Linux box?

If it happened Apple would be stuffed in Europe unless they unbundle hardware and MacOS (very unlikely as bundled OS has been the rabid company philosophy since the beginning - and there have been many attempts to persuade them to release MacOS to other platforms without any success). If they do unbundle they would have to produce hardware at prices that could reasonably compete - which would be interesting.

Personally I think if Apple are forced they will simply move out of Europe and either not supply to Europe or just provide a shop from the US via the internet.

Apple are already coming under serious pressure from the EU because of the iPod/iTunes/iTunes Store near monopoly so it will be interesting to see where it all runs.

My own view is that we won't see it happen in our lifetime - MS won't let it. They will keep the EU in court until hell freezes over to stop it and probably have enough financial weight to force the US to impose trade sanctions on Europe!

True I had forgotten it did that too - but to be honest I got irritated using it as it just adds clicks and leaves stuff loaded without actually seeing what is there. I actually prefer to see what is in my tray at a glance and to access it with a single mouse action. That way I remember to exit stuff! - plus it is quicker to access applications.

I use FBE to access folders - sorry I think I was getting it confused with PS HotFolders !

To be fair - without DRM Audible wouldn't exist simply because the audio book publishers insist on it. They even withdrew a huge number of books at one point (notably including Terry Pratchett's books) because people were sharing 'deprotected' files but finally persuaded the publishers to allow them to stock them again. Audible don't actually publish any of the content - it all comes from main stream publishers and large audio book publishers. Many of the books are at ridiculously reduced prices (eg. to purchase some of the Pratchett books on audio cassettes or CD would cost over £40/$75 per title - with a subscription you can get them for as little as £8/$15). I hate DRM but I can understand why they have no choice.

I don't know about Opera but I have no problems with Audible. OK I hate Audible Manager but you don't need to use that - there is a small download utility that works with Windows Media Player and iTunes (I use both) - when you click on a download link it automatically launches the download utility (or you can have it harmlessly sit in the system tray) and downloads the files to one location and then adds them automatically to WMP and iTunes (and Manager if you have it installed). Note you do have to configure it to do this (ie. click a number of boxes in the options - look for the green tray icon). For me it works flawlessly every time with both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

See Audible Software Downloads Page and Guide to Audible Download Manager for iTunes and WMP

If there is an issue with Opera I would personally blame the Opera developers - they aren't exactly noted for their open attitude towards interacting with other developers!

The one thing I really like about Audible (and unique in my experience) is that your entire collection of audio books remains available on line. You can download it as many times as you lie whether you maintain your subscription or not. Best of all if a book becomes unavailable to purchase they retain a copy for library purposes so you don't lose your books.

They are also responsive via their help system - and do sort out problems quickly (where it is their fault) and usually help if it is not their fault - like activating too many computers/devices in my case - they simply reset all the counters at their end!

I have have had bad experience with almost every other company - particulary iTunes store (you get a one time opportunity to download), endless licence problems with WMP files (from most of the stores licensed to use WMP stores). I have eBooks I can no longer read because I can't renew my license (Amazon has stopped selling the books and there is no other way to get a license), video I can no longer play because the supplier doesn't stock them any longer.

I have now got to the point where I don't buy DRMed files - and if I do I make sure I have a mechanism to unDRM them (iTunes and WMA are burned to Audio CDs and ripped back as MP3).

The only company I don't worry about is Audible - and I have literally hundreds of Audible books.

I use many programs throughout the day and some of these are shareware. I like to use free ones though as far as possible. Below are some programs I couldn't simply find good free alternatives for:

 PS Tray Factory

I used to use PS Tray Factory but now I use FileBoxExtender (see http://www.hyperionics.com/) which is free for Windows XP (they aren't producing a Vista version). I find it better than PS Tray Factory for my use - and it is now free.

DriveSnapShot looks really good - I may give it a go.

The only drawback I can see with it (in principle) is that backing up to and restoring to removable media (such as DVD+R) is not supported. Sure you can set the maximum backup file size and burn them manually but they would have to be copied to a partition or a network drive before you could restore them.

Interesting if this became law - would Apple also have to comply?

of course they would - it is a computer.

So presumably Apple would simply stop selling their computers in Europe since they only see computers with MacOS and don't distribute MacOS as an alternative OS anyway.

I always find it so weird that people seem to think that kde or gnome or any of these things are "linux". They are not.

That may be true - but KDE seems to have become a de facto standard and for most users they install Linux with KDE (and probably Gnome too) so their perception is that Linux and KDE are all one. In reality how many people actually use Linux these days as a purely command prompt interface?

;) What linux needs:
Computers in the European Union should be sold without a bundled operating system, according to our new submission to the European Commission.

Won't happen - and if it doesn't no one will be happy:

  • Manufacturers will miss out on kickbacks from MS and other crapware advertisers so built system prices will increase drammatically
  • Other than hardware faults manufacturer support will be impossible (or at least not offered)
  • Most people will buy Windows - and most won't have even heard of OEM versions so it will cost a fortune => computer sales will plummit
  • Linux is not prime time - and most users will never have heard of it and won't be able to use it out of the box even if they had - it will spawn a paid support industry adding more costs to end users

Realistically there isn't competition in OS for Joe Public.

Interesting if this became law - would Apple also have to comply?

General Software Discussion / Re: System drivers
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 24, 2007, 04:12 AM »
IME motherboard and graphics drivers seem to get slower (as do BIOSes) over time. The trouble is that they fix bugs (and often seem to introduce a new batch) but it isn't worth their time to increase performance on older hardware. In the initial flurry of driver writing when new stuff comes out then speed is obviously important but after a year or so this just isn't true any more.

A good example of this was my old ATI RADEON AIW card. ATI produces a combined driver pack called CATALYST (in case you didn't know) but before a finally said goodbye to my Radeon card the driver updates specifically said they fixed bugs and worked with my card BUT even ATI pointed out that they are optimised for the latest cards and will actually run slower than previous versions on older cards.

I check every now and again on the mobo manufacturer's website - but I only update if there is a specific issue causing problems (ditto BIOS). Graphics I update from the nVidia website.

I used to try to use the ASUS update utility but it seemed very unstable - and updaters (IMHO) should be rock solid - esp. if it is looking at BIOS updates!

Yep - they do have it on Amazon.de and Amazon.fr too but both are much more expensive than the UK price (for once).

Personally if I were to buy it now I would buy TI 10 and not go for TI 11 (even if you can find a cheap copy). IME Acronis will take 3-6 months to make TI 11 bug free.

As a company it has an interesting approach. The corporate versions are at version 9.1 (I use TI 9.1 Workstation) and hasn't seen any sort of update since February. Basically they only seem to move on the corporate versions after home users iron out all the bugs. In other words home users pay to be beta testers!

True Image 9 is pretty good (and stable now) and for $8 ...
unfortunately Carol us in europe have to pay 25$ postage for that .. (& no download option)

Where are you based?

If you are in Europe TrueImage 10 is at Amazon.co.uk for under £15 - see http://www.amazon.co...0-Home/dp/B000JQIDB8 in the UK you get free shipping - but it won't be too expensive to get it delivered in Europe.

I also spotted this on a web trawl Acronis True Image Home 11 at $29 (download version) http://www.usergroupstore.com/ (Look under products) I don't know anything about the store or how it works but it might be worth a look. Only if you can face using a new version which may be bug ridden if past experience is anything to go by.
Additional info
If you go through the checkout process you need to be a member of a user group in order to get the discount price - not sure how easy this is to acheive

I don't think they will go to a compete with Corel Draw as Xara Xtreme Pro has a lot of functions - and in pure drawing terms is a good rival app - but it doesn't have nearly the breadth that Corel Draw has. In particular they would have to improve the painting aspect of Xara hugely to have any chance of competing.

If they do try to match the Corel product I think they are stupid - at the moment Xara is a unique product and IMHO it should stay that way. It's main advantage is sheer speed of rendering as you draw and edit - it outstrips everything else. If they just bloat it up to compete current users will be very unhappy.

General Software Discussion / Re: Using Nero 7 Anyone help????
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 22, 2007, 07:01 PM »
As you say it can convert all sorts of formats (using Nero ReCode and Nero Vision). It can capture stuff from  cameras etc. but it doesn't allow you to capture streaming video from the net.

If you want to capture net video and audio there is a good combination - Mouser's URL snooper (downloaded from this site) allows you to find the name of the file that is being streamed and then Streambox VCR (do a websearch for it) will download the file.

If you are using Firefox as your browser there is also an addin which helps to capture video streams in some formats - it is called Download Helper.

Once you have the file on your PC you may be able to use Nero to recode it for other uses (such as burning to DVD).

When they announced 3.2 as a forthcoming release I emailed the Xara team and they told me if you have version 3.02 don't bother upgrading unless there is something you really need (unlikely) which was at least honest.

I emailed them after the release complaining of the fast turn around of paid versions and the general direction things were going and told them I was no longer willing to promote a company that behaves that way through the affiliate scheme (which is why you no longer see Xara in my sig). I got a very polite reply which suggested that they understood my reasoning and were sympathetic.

It seems Magix is to blame and looking around the web at other aquisitions they made it look like typical behaviour. Xara as a company/development team are still actually producing and distributing Xara Xtreme Pro etc. and I actually feel a bit sorry for them. Not enough to buy any more versions though!

I feel pretty pissed off at the whole situation - I have been a customer since Xara was called ArtWorks (and the company called ComputerConcepts) and only ran on Acorn RiscOS computers (I also used their fabulous DTP app Impression written in really efficient Risc assembler - worked like lightening and did pretty much what most DTP apps do now) but no longer. I'd guess many of their customers will feel the same way.
