Living Room / Re: How to achieve good customer service

It show that, a little break to consider things before you react, may help you building a good relationship with your troubled consumers, with all the benefits this poses.

My troubled customers certainly deserve a little break from me.  I usually try for the neck!  ;)

Living Room / Re: Ideas to make DC even better
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 26, 2007, 11:40 PM »
Veign: I'm not sure I could classify a website posting Google Ads as being (or becoming) commercial.

Well, I must respectfully disagree with that.
Raising revenue from advertising is, by definition, a commercial venture.
I make my living from advertising and there is just no other way to describe it.
What do you call those intervals between TV programming that tout products and services?   :)

Whether or not that commercialism is inappropriate or discordant is an entirely different matter.

For me, the very concept of DonationCoder is tightly bound to a stated philosophy that eschews commercialism,
and that concept is very much a part of the unique standing that DonationCoder enjoys. Remember, once something
like that standing has been compromised there is no guarantee that it can be repaired.

If the objective here to is make profit (nothing wrong with that -- we all do, I hope) then that aim seems out of step
with the stated ideals and goals of the community. It is the misalignment between advertising and the
DonationCoder philosopy that strikes me as dicordant.

Perhaps the issue is one of context. The whole idea here is that this is a sharing community and it worries me
that the spirit of altruism that pervades it will be diminished. I submit that how people perceive this community
will not be enhanced by the advent of advertising.

Veign, I must add that what I say here is in no way meant to denigrate your obvious desire to create a benefit for DC.

Edited to correct a mistake with italics

Interesting ideas, and certainly valid in a lot of situations.

I hope you won't be offended if I say that I feel associating these with DonationCoder seeems a bit of an awkward juxtaposition of the commercial with the determinedly non-commercial.

It  seems to me that the whole thing was  just right.

Don't want to export empty files? Are we a bit picky?
You bet we are  :)

It doesn't crash, does it?
-f0dder
No, and that's another complaint -- now matter how hard I tried it just wouldn't roll over and die. Where's the fun in that?

As for drag-drop-add, should be possible (although I think the way import is done currently does wipe content implicitly, rather than it's me explicitly clearing contents as part of the action - so it might actually require some code :)). Will have a look, but I'll also have to hear what other people thing: should drag+drop add or replace text?
-f0dder
It's certainly no big deal.  There's a case to be made either way.
Of course, ctrl-drag+drop could add, whereas unmodified drag+drop...

And Merry Christmas to you too!

General Software Discussion / Re: How many of you use encryption?
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 20, 2007, 11:36 PM »
I use encryption for data that I send out if I consider it to be in any way sensitive.
I have some clients who damned well ought to do the same but who are quite prepared
to send their stuff around with no thought for security at all.

For my own stuff, on my own machines, some is encrypted and some not.
I really haven't adopted any system.  To be honest, I'm a bit leery of drive encryption --
pure ignorance on my part.  I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Should this response have been encrypted?   :tellme:  :)

Hello f0dder,

Thanks for your program.

Here's a very slight awkwardness.

If I save, say fS.exe, with encoded text
and later export text to fS.txt but do not explicitly add the .txt suffix,
then I get the resulting file saved as fS.exe (taken from the history list).

Also, I can quite happily export an empty text file
(a behaviour that I doubtless deserve for even thinking of trying to do so).

Drag and drop is nice.
Any chance that a drag and drop could add to, rather than a replace the content?

No need to in my case. I get quite a bit of email from Bill Gates, who's nice enough to offer me some hot stock tips.
