^noise reduction is in the latest update (not that new I think). The about window now says: 4.4h (b)

It works very well !
It really is a very impressive programme in terms of capability and quality of work done      (5 stars)

But some things still do my head in :(
I cant zoom in any familiar manner, (have to use a 'navigation pane'); cant pan normally (again, navigation pane). A navigation pane can have advantages (say moving from detail view in one area to same zoom of a completely different area), but as the only method to zoom & pan, it's a real challenge to revert to such a primitive method.
It doesnt recognise photo orientation here - if I rotate it, I can no longer use the split pane to show original in comparision with modified. I should/will make a post in the Sagelight forums about these...

Post New Requests Here / Re: Separate out and move files to subfolders
« Last post by tomos on November 07, 2013, 02:33 PM »
I dont even back up my photos to DVD any more but I still sort my photos in groups that *will* fit on a DVD (single-layer, say 4.2GB). That way I have the option. It's also simply a convenient breakdown size to use.

Would you consider adding MB (or GB) per sub-folder as an alternative option to the "Files per sub-folder" option?

TBH, I'm not sure how practical it would be to have so many photos in one folder. But the user could work around this and create folders with e.g. 1GB content. I average around 3 or 4 subfolders in a DVD size folder. In my case they're randomly based on the content of the camera's card when transferred.

Another "TBH" - I'm not sure would I use this, but I still think my suggestion would be a good extenstion of it.

Living Room / Re: YouTube finally forces creation of google+ A/C to comment
« Last post by tomos on November 07, 2013, 02:24 PM »
I have a youtube account that is not associated with my real name/G+ account. Google forced a secondary G+ identity on me that exists as a Youtube channel under my main account. It allows me to keep them separated, but not have to deal with having 2 google accounts to do it.

so do you have two G+ accounts with one gmail account?
That sounds like a good solution - I suspect it wont be offered to those who have no prior G+ account though...

Is this just about commenting?

so far anyway.
Re deleting accounts - you can delete your youtube account. It may be more difficult to create a (new) YT account separate from any current gmail accounts - you might have to get creative :-)

Apart from not liking to be forced to do something; and my lack of enthusiasm for the 'social' web after my experiences with Facebook - well, I dont actually mind having a G+ account that much.

I have particular interests in music and sport and follow these to a certain extent on YT. I can imagine enjoying having all of my comments and maybe likes/favourites/etc. available in a possibly more accessible manner. We'll see. But I'm not ready for the approach where I dump everything I do on the web into one page for the world to see. I dont think I'll ever *want* that - I mean if I want to share my interest in e.g. Old-Time or Bluegrass music - I pretty much only want to share it with people I know are interested.

So, I have mixed feelings about this. Will see how I get on.

One thing I already hate G+ for:
it steals the Ctrl+PgUp/Dn shortcut for moving through the tabs in Firefox >:(

Living Room / YouTube finally forces creation of google+ A/C to comment
« Last post by tomos on November 07, 2013, 12:49 PM »
YouTube have been annoying me for a long time with trying to persuade me to use my real name. The other option was to continue with my YT name - but *both* options led to the creation of a google+ account. So, I always 'X'd out of it, as I didnt want a google+ account.

Finally today, I was given the choice: create a google+ account or do not comment!
So I created a google plus account with my youtube name.

Immediately after, I got this banner:
___________________________________

Screenshot - 2013-11-07 , 16_34_07.png

Already having regrets, I clicked on the undo option.
Got this option:
___________________________________

Screenshot - 2013-11-07 , 19_35_41.png
___________________________________

so I tried the "Temporarily disconnect..." and got this:
___________________________________

Screenshot - 2013-11-07 , 19_38_01.png
___________________________________

- all blurred out names there are the same - which is a little confusing. I didnt go through with it though because
1) it said "Temporarily disconnect..." (my emphasis)
2) I reckon the G+ account is already created so wont make a whole lot of difference
3) it would disconnect the two but then I would probably be back where I started - unable to comment in YT

There must be some good samaritan forum out there that helps people remove stuff like that. I know of a german language one, but that's probably not much help for you.

Did do a quick search - the few removal guides I looked at, involved downloading unknown software of dubious origin, or paying 'support' to get all the details

...But option to say 'now is kind of a bad time' sure would be nice.
+1

I remember now how I got rid of it - first here's what the banner looks like:

installwindows8-1-2-2-625x1000.jpg

the only option given is: [Go to the Store]
I went to the store and somewhere in there found the option to cancel.

I presume it will come back though, so did a search and found this regristry workaround (disclaimer - haven't tried it):
"How to dismiss the Windows 8.1 Upgrade banner?"

Site/Forum Features / Re: Some guidelines and rules about posting on the forum
« Last post by tomos on November 07, 2013, 05:32 AM »
Okay, couple of suggestions:

in order to make things a little clearer for posters:
there needs to be a sticky "guidelines" thread similar to this one in both the Software and Living Room boards.

I'd separate out the biggees (politics/religion/financial-advice) from the minor/practical list.
  • List one could be the biggees
  • List two: the details, e.g. dont use shortened urls etc.

I note that the financial advice is not included in OP.

Maybe expand slightly on the political aspect - or maybe not? It seems pretty simple to me and the way you've phrased it is good: "topics of politics and religion should be avoided on the forum unless it is an issue directly impacting technology."
One problem is that, if there is a political issue "directly impacting technology" (or vice-versa), it's easy to slip into more 'pure' politics e.g. having a dig at a politician, or a political party - which could also be described as getting 'gratuitiously political' ;-) So maybe a comment about that too?

Sure it is. Anything a stand-alone client can do, a browser can do....

Exactly. The author either doesn't understand that you can implement stuff client side (Javascript for example) or he is making the leap that because doing so could potentially be too slow (in execution cycles) to be usable equates to "not possible"

If you start doing the decryption with javascript, then there are a number of issues that make it impractical and not totally secure. The question of where the private key is stored still exists. For practical and usability reasons, it's most convenient for the service to maintain the keys on their servers. It's possible that those keys can be password protected to provide limited protection against snooping, but users are notoriously bad at picking good passwords. Alternatively, you have to find some way to let the user store the private key themselves, leaving them wholly responsible for keeping it secure and backed up.

But assuming you have a workable solution for private key storage, you also need a way for the browser to perform the decryption of the email content, which is separate from normal decryption performed as part of the SSL/TLS connection. If, as you suggest, this is done by some JavaScript in the page. Then that exposes a huge security hole.

If you give the JavaScript access to the key and the user's password for decrypting the key, then it is also possible for that script to send a copy of the password and/or decrypted key back to the server. You have to have a certain level of trust in the service provider that they won't do this. But, that is exactly what HushMail did, and they were forced to snoop the credentials of some specific users in order to turn over unencrypted emails to the authorities.

It's also, unfortunately, the approach taken by services like LastPass when you log in via the website, rather than the extention, or use their security check tool. Users have to trust that LastPass is never going to send any javascript for the purpose of stealing their credentials. But they could certainly do so if they were ordered to. They could theoretically even direct this malicious version of the script to a specific IP address or user account, so no-one else could possibly notice it.

yeah, I got a banner the other day (similar to the one you get when the battery is low). The only choice given is to upgrade. The only button says upgrade. Now, I got out of it somehow, but it was late or early and I was in a rush and I cant remember exactly how I got around it :-\ :-[

I had written a long post, but after mouser's post it seems more off-topic here. I'm just wondering if there's another thread for the "off-topic topic" in general (what's appropriate/inappropriate to post about)?
If there's no suggestions of a previous thread, I could start a new one (or may just drop it...)

Bitcoin is a technological advance.  Just because it has something to do with financials doesn't make it any less so.  Just my .02.  And looking back through the thread, most of it is of a technological slant- even the last article posted.  First we wanted to have one thread to contain it... and now no threads at all?  Just ignore anything to do with it?

Seems a bit off...

in fairness I didnt see that requested anywhere -
the request was to avoid talk of it as an investment ["financial market prediction and investment advice"].

^thanks 4wd
I did discover that the 'Navigation Lock' attempts to work for all tabs, and gives a warning if you change to another tab showing a different location.

Trying 'Link Tab' now:

Linked tabs

In a dual-display Lister, a folder tab on one side of the Lister can be linked with a tab on the other side. When two tabs are linked, selecting one in the Lister to make it active automatically activates the linked tab too. Linked tabs are displayed in different colors from unlinked tabs, and you can configure these colors from the Display / Colors and Fonts page in preferences.

Making one a slave tab, means it will follow the location in the other tab - but not vice-versa. That suits my needs nicely, thanks again

Edit (I never read the manual properly/fully!)
You may choose to make both tabs in a pair slaves, in which case changing the folder in either tab will also change the folder in the other, or you may choose to only make one of the two takes a slave, in which case changes to the non-slave tab will affect both tabs while changes to the slave tab will only affect it.

Snowden might end up being extradited to the US within a couple of months, regardless of what the German government might have promised him.
yes,
politicians are fickle too, i.e. that could become a possibility for many reasons. I guess it's also a possibility for Snowden wherever he goes... but the noises from here would probably want to be a lot more convincing before he'd consider it.

It might already be a ruse to entice Snowden into a country from which he could be more readily extradited to the US. There's no honour amongst thieves.
-
not at the moment anyway: it's a followup to the outrage at Merkel's mobile phone being 'tapped'.

There's been a lot of talk about Snowden in the German news reports today and yesterday - in particular about the possibility of giving him asylum here. It was suggested by a 'Green' politician - the middle and right are reacting cautiously, along the lines of: maybe/wont rule it out.

EDIT// there is the possibility that this is being taken seriously simply because all parties are currently negotiating to try and form a new coalition government - the 'right' (CDU/CSU) almost, but not quite, having the complete majority.

I have no investment in Bitcoin in any way (literally or beliefs-wise), but I'm happy to see it, and to see what happens with it. I believe it will change things, even if it eventually collapses or 'is collapsed' or just corralled. It has changed things already. People are thinking about possibilities and looking at how it's working - and if it doesnt, someone else will come along with a new improved version. Or maybe something completely different.

Re PayPal/Ebay, they'll actually go in there if they think it will be profitable, or worthwhile (= profitable indirectly). One scenario is: if it does start to become more popular - or if they even just suspect that - it will be in their interest to support it. Otherwise people will be using bitcoin with no fees - and why should they then revert to PayPal, who want their pound of flesh from you for the privilege of using it? Another scenario is, if they think the advertising will be worth any possible hassles (I'd reckon it's no big hassle to them -any hassles, they just stop supporting it).
