WinDim 1.1.4.0 Now if the target window is not resizeable a status bar msg is displayed and the Size and Both Buttons are disabled. In that case the default button is set to Position.

Here's a scree shot of the Set dialog

WinDim 1.1.3.0 WinDim can now be used to Position a window with non-sizeable borders. Attempts to use Size or Both Buttons will display an error dialog if the target window is not sizeable.  Minor bug fixes.

WinDim 1.1.2.0 Removed the "training wheels."  No normalize function is performed on width or height of the window.  Also it's no longer required to do a "save" before using the "set" hotkey.  Winkey +s will bring up the Gui. This enables the precise positioning and/or sizing of the active window by entering numbers in the edit lines. Of course you can still use Winkey +g to get dimensions from the active window.

The headline looks like a candidate for Jay Leno's newspaper bit on The Tonight Show. I can see Jay holding it up.  "Yeah! About time they banned those fake guns! If someone is brandishing a pistol in a theater where I'm watching a movie it's reassuring to know the thing is real!!"

WinDim 1.1.0.0 Some significant changes. Took clipboard out of the mix.  Added a Gui with edit lines to fine tune size/position values.  Also the target window may be sized, positioned or both.

There is a normalize function for window width height that's basically a sanity check to set minimums. But the source is included.

If you compile yourself please use the latest AHK_L release. I'm using 32 bit English language Unicode version 1.1.08.00

Or did you mean "Nice to know there's somebody real out there  :)"

Both :)  Add in they like my software and I don't mind  it being free.
(Of course it would feel even "freer" if I had a trust fund, but can't have everything.) :)

Everything went fine, as I posted later. Must be the download button had the same look as some rip-off site where I'd get three links in only to find I was wasting my time.  Could be they just used the same graphic for the button.

I can see that artistically the caliper thing looks cool. But I think a more utilitarian design would be a cross with multiple jaws. That would minimize rotation.

It's apparent from the graphic below that I can't draw. But it gives the idea.  The read-out would be in the middle. Also since it's on a computer screen and is not a physical tool, there's no need for the "frame" to be as large as the jaws can be extended. Just have broken line animation while dragging.

WinDim 1.0.0.4 is a hotkey to get the dimensions of the active window and optionally save them to clipboard. It can also set the dimensions of an active window from the clipboard save, if the target has sizeable border style.

You may download from my Hotkeys Page

It creates no .ini files or Registry settings. Just copy the exe to a folder in your path. Click on Tray Icon for usage dialog.

I just went through the install.  Seems legit. For me it may be useful for measuring elements inside windows/forms.  But for window dimensions I wrote a hotkey that gives window width height and left top.  Another hotkey changes a window to the saved width height. I have to look it over to make sure I check the target "set" window frame is resizeable before I post on my site.

They had a review on Softpedia. Major complaint was rotating the caliper. I just tried it and it felt very awkward.  But for free I'll take it. :)

edit: I used a hotmail email for registration and there wasn't any issue. "Unlock" after install succeeded.

Has anyone downloaded and installed from this offer? I'm wondering because I remember awhile back some sites had "free" stuff but it was only free if you purchased like 2 programs or some other jazz.

@skwire .. congrats on PlayTime being posted on SnapFiles. I just wrote a review with all categories maxed. Hopefully it will pass moderation to be posted in a couple of days. :) Even though Windows Seven has some of the features in Explorer for total times and sizes, I still use PlayTime.  Right clicking on a folder full of media files really makes it. :)

Living Room / Re: esata vs. USB...fight!
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 22, 2012, 07:19 PM »
I've talked to people with eSata docking stations, but I haven't gotten much in the way of numbers such as sequential read and write.  Can you post eSata Crystal Diskmark numbers along with the percentage free space of your drive and its max sustained transfer rate?

Usually when I run into people complaining about slow USB 3.0 they have chips on the motherboard. Not a PCI express card.

As example I have a couple of WD caviar black Sata III drives. The specs say max sustained transfer rate is 126 MB/s.  But Crystal Diskmark, for some bizarre reason, likes to call one million bytes a MB. Therefore the numbers are slightly inflated, where on a freshly formatted drive of this type it will show sequential reads and writes over 130 MB/s.  Since the factory spec is 126 I'm assuming the inflated number is due to the one million bytes = 1 MB quirk of CDM.  But still, I don't see my SIIG PCI express card slowing anything down. I'd be curious what eSata numbers are out there for this same drive in a docking station.

This is the drive:
http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16822136533

This is the card: (edit: now for desktop machines you can get setups that provide 4 ports on the front of the PC.  This card the ports are on the back. No big deal if you have a big desk. If your tower is on the floor it can be a pita.)

http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16815150161

This is the dock: (edit: I thought I put the corrected link. This is the USB 3.0 dock, not USB 2.0)
http://www.siig.com/...ocking-with-fan.html

Since my HP machines only come with Sata II disk controllers, the drives in the docks outperform the internal system drives.

I've heard of the "Fx" abbreviation only ONCE before this thread. Every person I talk to on IRC, web forums, in person, etc. refer to firefox as either firefox or FF. Mozilla can call it what they want, but the true abbreviation is what the masses use.

Seems like some attention getting ploy. Like Apple usurping the term "apps" when it's been shorthand for any software program before even Dos existed, and MS usurping "gadget" for some small utilities. That would be fine except then when you use the term normally somebody says it's not a "gadget" unless it conforms to some MS definition(of which I am blissfully ignorant as I de-crappify my PCs as soon as I plug 'em in the first time. Maybe there's one or two worth using [I say maybe because I really haven't tried any of 'em] but generally I find if something is really good they[by "they" I mean large corporations] try to charge money for it instead of ramming it up where the sun don't shine for free.)  :)

People outside the computer "community" won't abbreviate Firefox.

I've never seen it abbreviated as Fx until this thread. But then I don't remember the last time I logged onto my Mozilla account.  Browser forums tend to be too dogmatic for me.

I think I'm still considered a son of Beelzebub because I pointed out on the Opera browser forum that clicking the mouse 3 or 4 times in rapid succession to copy some text to clipboard promoted CTS. Don't try to fix it. Just lambaste the messenger.  But anyway... I guess anyone who is typing in a browser and posting on a board is part of the "computer community" and I sure see a lot of FF out there referring to FF, er, I mean, Firefox.

The HTTPS Everywhere looks interesting. Are there really 3rd parties sniffing everything you do such as using search engines? I guess I have to read more about why using it is a good idea. If a site is sending stats to some advertiser I don't know if this does any good. But that's because I haven't read up on it yet. :)

Someone posted this program on one of the forums.. maybe Windows 7 forum. I just modified it to accept larger numbers for the length of path to search for.  I think what you are running into is Explorer will not let you go over 260 characters or so, for the total path. I've tested creating empty folders and it gets to the point I can't even click down into them.  But programs can create files with much longer paths than Explorer wants to play with(probably because of its ANSI origins.) So you run into the situation Explorer doesn't even recognize the file path as valid, much less let you move or delete it.

Anyway, this program searches your system for paths longer than whatever you enter in the InputBox.

The preferred abbreviation for Firefox is Fx, Mozilla uses it for extension file names. FF is wrong as there is no second capital F in Firefox.

FF is Final Fantasy. :D

Fx is a channel on cable TV afaic.  Hold on a sec.  Let me make an error in grammar so you can correct that also. :)

Um, let's see... Me don't gut no idea what faux pas to make. (Or is faux pas another browser beta not yet announced? )

And Firefox 15 is already in the beta stage.  ;D

IIRC Google has been supporting (and optionally defaulting to) HTTPS for a while yet? (I'm on SSL DuckDuckGo anyway.)

I'm using chromium as primary. Guess it has its own settings with macros. To move it to https I had to delete it, add it in the "other" section, then make it default. edit: glad you asked the question. That gave me the impetus to update the settings in chromium.

So far 14.01 feels just like 4.  Which is a good thing I guess.  It's a shame the author of SyncPlaces has thrown in the towel. That was the only bookmark sync I knew of where you could use your own ftp page for storage, that worked. Fortunately CheckPlaces still works. I can upload from chromium using Xmark sync, then download into FF.  Then use CheckPlaces to load the favicons.

I assume "fish" is euphemism for excrement, or some other unpleasant item(s). :)

I was happy running FF 4 but I noticed this article about FF 14.01 sending google searches via https. Not sure how much difference that makes, but you don't have to set anything to do it. It comes that way. I just updated over 4 and my google search does in fact use https to get the goods.

I'm using it now. I just updated a few minutes ago. So far it doesn't seem like I have to do anything. The AddOns that were disabled I don't think I need anyway. FDM I don't need the plug-in. Just drag download to the desktop target. FF is my secondary so that's why I'm less concerned.

The main thing is LastPass works.

So far so good. :)

edit: Whoops. Forgot to post the Addictive Tips link:

I have skipped vista and win7 but I think my new PC will be a win8.

I'd get Win7.  Even a lot of the regulars on Windows Seven forum who count the days to beta leaks and releases are taking a pass on 8. It's just a stop gap so MS doesn't miss out on the finger drag market. For a desktop machine W7 is better.
