Lexx is a bit too much off the beaten path for most.

Really? It wasn't that hard to find. It was on SciFi here for a year or so, the wife and I loved it. (Or I could be missing your meaning)

But hey, I like shows where someone plays the cowardly weasel right. Andromeda has also a good one.

hehe Yes, some people are fun to hate. :)

On Star Gate in general, it seems like they're really just been spit-balling in the hopes of reproducing the chemistry of the original series. But it's hard to clone Jack O'Neil. He really made the show work, at least for me (McGuiver fan).
-Stoic Joker (May 06, 2011, 06:29 AM)

Correct. Except that they are trying to turn it into a more modern Star Trek Voyager at the same time, or a Stargate Atlantis without that annoying McKay and a darker feel. They're not making their own story, but they rip off stuff left and right and middle and inbetween. I know everything steals from everything, but you are supposed to make it mesh rather than have it act like a textbook case of Televised Multiple Personality Disorder.

Quite true, I liked Voyager much better than Next Generation. Janeway had ball much unlike Piccard (what a dink). And then there's Riker who kept destroying the Enterprise every time they let him drive ... What's up with that?

I'm good with most of the rest of your assessment also, except the Andromeda outfits, they were just fine in my book. Oh yeah and I liked Farscape.

Come to think of it nobody has mentioned Lexx yet ... Come on now, you gotta like the psychotic talking robot head!

... the last short line of a paragraph across the whole page...
-Stoic Joker (May 06, 2011, 06:39 AM)

There's a setting to prevent the last line in a fully justified paragraph from doing that.  I could find it in Word 2002 if that would help.

It couldn't hurt, at least I'd know what I was looking for. I've actually had the problem before in anything from 2007 down. But I got 2010 now and it's giving me fits.

Is there really an end-paragraph marker (pilcrow) at the end of the paragraph, or is it a manual line-break, which brings different behavior?

I've tried it both ways and more to no avail. Line break, paragraph break, page break, make no difference ... It just broke.

It's a creeping disease... Infection is just taking hold here.

It is becoming quite clear that our rights & privacy are up for sale to the highest bidder. And usually by the same bunch of randy assholes that keep telling us about how dangerous HacKerS are. Ha!

Any chance we can cook up a Gray Hat hacking group? Or is that what Anonymous is for?

@Stoic

the "update" is a full install for the newer OS's = we are confident think hope that our belief in this statement will have you in stitches.
-cranioscopical (May 06, 2011, 09:49 AM)

tehehe Yeah, nice miss on their part.

Anyhow... Ath got me to thinking, so I did a Rip-Over to see if I could fake-out the installer. The Rip turned out to be clean enough for the program to run stably, and claim it was licensed also (which Janome said was impossible... (Ha!)).

The installer still goes BooM! ...However as I do now have a perfectly stable, "licensed" rip of the program running just dandy on the client's machine... *Shrug* ...Screw the installer! She'll be happier sticking with the version she already knew anyhow!

Problem Solved - Thank You Ath!

Silly question: You have Customizer 10000 Plus or Customizer 10000 already installed, before applying this update?

Hm... Interesting question, no being the short answer. However everything in their support section implies that the "update" is a full install for the newer OS's. I'd also expect a different error message/behavior if that was the case...

...(on second thought) Loosely interpreted - Considering this thing has been translated a few times - You could be on to something...

General Software Discussion / InstallShield Install Issue
« Last post by Stoic Joker on May 06, 2011, 08:25 AM »
Greetings
Normally I can get these things to work, but this one is killing me. I've got a client machine on the bench that I'm trying to get an embroidery application (Janome Customizer) installed on. According to Janome's site it should run just fine on the (brand new out-of-the-box HP) Win7 x64 machine is question...However, the InstallShield installer fails during load.

I've tried a medley of different compatibility settings, disabled UAC, (hard & soft) DEP, and also disabled the (Norton) AV by uninstalling it. All to no avail. I've also tried re-downloading the file multiple times, and running the install on my Win7 x86 machine here at the office with identical (lack of) results.

The IS window starts to load, then the window boarder disappears, and it throws a completely useless error message. The behavior reminds me of something I can't quite remember, so I thought I'd run it past the crew here to see if somebody recognized the behavior.

Screen-Shot of Behavior:
Capture.jpg

Each time it fails it logs a Application Event ID 1000, Source: Application, Faulting Module Name: iuser.dll.

Any Ideas?

So with such a contradiction, isn't that opening themselves up for lawsuits?

Not really, in lawyer speak it says they promise not to, but reserve the right to. At least that's my interpretation of it. I'll not be touching that with a 438" pole.
-Stoic Joker (May 06, 2011, 06:51 AM)

That's 11 m, 12 cm and 5.2 mm for those that use metric. i.e. A damn long pole~! :)

Crap, it was supposed to be 438' (foot) pole (was thinking about the Grinch for some reason). I gotta learn how to type one of these days.

Haha! The last one is awesome. :)

But seriously, Home Alone and The Little Mermaid? I thought I saw both of those right around the time they came out, but I'm not in my 30s.

Are you sure about that?

Macaulay Culkin - Born Macaulay Carson Culkin (August 26, 1980)

So if he's in his 30s, you gotta be close too.

cool tip.

Not so much. It only works for two words, and kinda works for three (second word gets middle aligned). So this is one of the niche exploits which look cool, but are not very useful.

Most cool, gotta jot that one down. But now that you mention it (reminded me of something), is there a way to stop/modify that behavior?

I used to frequently use full justify because I like the look of the evenly blocked text. But in seems lately that it always wants to smear the last short line of a paragraph across the whole page (much like your tip above). It never did that before...and it's really annoying. The last line if only a few words should stay left aligned(ish) as it's a much cleaner look, and is what Word used to do (for the most part) by default.

I hope they'll save it, if only because it was starting to get a bit better at times. And because I fear what sort of crappy thing they'll replace it with.

I'll give you that one hands down. SciFi Friday used to be mandatory on our household. Right up until they ruined it with (2 hours of) wrestling. What moron decided that qualified as Science Fiction?!?

On Star Gate in general, it seems like they're really just been spit-balling in the hopes of reproducing the chemistry of the original series. But it's hard to clone Jack O'Neil. He really made the show work, at least for me (McGuiver fan).

I think they're just trying to get the jump on the Orwellian dark horse "Big Brother" position. First the souls of the user-base are collected, then the get delivered to the dark overlords for entertainment & consumption.

This is why they thrive on our hatred...

Hmm, I'm now beginning to wonder if any password stored service is safe. This story is going to become increasingly common I suspect. Not good.

My guess would be no ... Unless you're using a copy of f0dder's fskrit from an online file storage.

Very cool indeed, thanks for sharing.

It probably has some type of automated maintenance schedule, that normally runs (or would run) at night. So if the machine is off...and it can't run or scedule...it will have to catchup later. Like while you're trying to use the thing.

If you can figure out what the schedule is and leave it running that night so it can get itself out of the way. You'll probably have much less aggravation.

Doing the rounds on Digg today... (see attachment in previous post)

Actually, come to think of it, that's a serious issue.

Given Apple's behavior, you could never trust them in any secure environment.

O_o ...Because they're tracking them by their foot prints now too..?

(Of course, I'd think he'd want a more violent last stand, i.e. a true sacrifice to martyr himself, but that might have had the opposite effect...)

Heroes tend to go out in a blaze-of-glory, and/or sometime survive. For a martyr, on the other hand, survival is a complication. As the object is/was/and always will be, to end up dead in an emotionally provocative fashion. OBL's role was to be played (to his audience) as that of a victimized holy man. As opposed to being seen (machine-guns-A-blazing) as a mad-dog killer.

Everyone here already has a vast vocabulary of profanities, obscenities, curse and swear words, so you already know my opinion on the topic.

:( But you do it so well...  :(
-Stoic Joker (May 03, 2011, 04:51 PM)

I'm really trying to be more positive and avoid ranting. I'd rather rave about great products and services than scream about bad ones and evil companies. There's just nothing very good to say about Apple. :(

Understood, but you had mentioned in another thread that you were curious about how much of the iTracking story was actually true/hype. So I was hoping to get your take on how well the patent story/angle held water (e.g. I know shit about patents).

The highlight of your rants has always been (for me anyway) your extremely in-depth understanding of the architecture & detail provided, the whit is always good, and screaming fuck of course is optional. ;)

O_o ...So this is a prepackaged downloadable local searchable library of code samples? Or am I missing something? Either was it looks handy as hell.
-Stoic Joker (May 03, 2011, 07:28 AM)

It lists things so you can search, then download. I don't think it downloads them all to start, but you can do that if you want.
Ah! Okay... It's a ("Web App") Cloud Thing. Might be handy if I can remember to use it next time I get stuck (hehe).

Thanks
