Google Wave was a (half-hearted) attempt. And it got got flamed down, before it even got a chance to come to fruition.
As it was in development still, encryption could have been a building block, instead of a bolted-on thing for almost all other forms of communication.-Shades (December 24, 2014, 06:35 AM)
Sorry to dredge this all up again. But I think it's important to not have people get the wrong impression of what went down. And although I'm possibly the biggest F/OSS advocate and cheerleader here at DoCo, I get no pleasure seeing somebody walk away who feels (correctly or incorrectly) that they've just been screwed over royally by the GPL. Because, with something like the F/OSS movement - which is entirely dependent on trust and goodwill to accomplish its goals - hard feelings can't benefit anybody.-40hz (December 23, 2014, 09:52 PM)
I would love to bring the UN-Oficial version's code in house and have it added to the code Database.I suspect that legally the whole thing is still covered by the original open source licence. I don't think that was ever changed. iirc it came as a shock to the developer that he wasn't free just to say it was private and charge for it. Of course, being open source does not mean that the source code was actually released, simply that it should have been. But it would mean that the availability of the .exe is legitimate.
A part of me still holds out hope that this most potentially excellent of launchers will resurrect at some point, and be free and open source again.-sgtevmckay (December 23, 2014, 01:18 PM)-Dormouse (December 23, 2014, 07:50 PM)
Task Catcher Sneak Preview Beta!
Current customers have access to all proposed features. In appreciation to long time fans of BillP you can purchase Task Catcher during our Sneak Preview for only $9.95. That's 50% off the launch cost of a single user license.
When I first created Task Catcher I had grand expectations to manage the research and development of both WinPatrol and Task Catcher. Due to popularity of WinPatrol my attention to Task Catcher suffered. Now, WinPatrol is being enhanced by new technology from Ruiware and I have time to make Task Catcher a program I wouldn’t want to be without.
Current Preview Task Catcher v1.9.5.0.
My goal is to create an app that I can use on both my phone and desktop. Microsoft has made it possible to use their new technology in ways even they didn't imagine. I have improved and updated the Windows Desktop app giving it many of the tweaks I used to optimize WinPatrol. Task Catcher isn't like WinPatrol but it has been written in C and optimized to run in the background without interfering with your computer or its performance. It uses a “Windows Hook” allowing it to sleep until a task is either created or destroyed. Even then it has little work to do. What I learn optimizing the Desktop app will be added to the mobile versions along with unique new functionality.
Task Catcher isn’t a replacement for Task Manager or a competitor for Process Explorer. I did however take advantage of user testing Microsoft did when they updated their own Windows Task/Process Manager, Microsoft Building Windows 8 - Task Manager I’ve taken the best of their research and applied it to Task Catcher but mostly I listened to the existing users and have added the features they have patiented waited for.
Task Catcher has specific functionality that will be tested in our first sneak preview while other functionality and interface improvements are added.
Track Programs
One of the newest features added to Task Catcher we'll track how often you spend running your favorite programs. The Sneak Peview will show you simple statistics and depending on user feedback you may see unique data compatible with your favorite spreadsheet. You should also see date and times formatted correctly for your region. You can tell Task Catcher which programs you depend on and it will make sure that your required program is always running. If Task Catcher doesn't see your "Watched" program, it will alert you or automatically restart it. The choice is always yours.
Watch List
You can tell Task Catcher which programs you depend on and it will make sure that your required program is always running. If Task Catcher doesn't see your "Watched" program, it will alert you or automatically restart it. The choice is always yours.
Blocked List
Sometimes there are programs you never want started on your system. Programs added to your Block List will automatically be shut down when detected by Task Catcher.
Task Catcher will allow you to create a Block List of programs you want to make sure the kids can never run.
Opt-in combined with a non-confrontational and measured tit-for-tat game strategy! It's a very powerful and attractive concept once you start thinking along those lines.-40hz (December 22, 2014, 05:32 PM)

This!A worthy opponent is worth their weight in gold if you really do want to work through and clarify your position on something. It's fun. It's challenging. And it's absolutely essential if you want to avoid the trap of what philosopher William James called: "vicious abstractionism."

If a developer wants to "bundle" his apps with other tools that are "OPT-IN", so that they will not install by default by a distracted user,-mouser (December 21, 2014, 03:44 AM)
Does anyone actually use opt-in? I don't think I've ever seen anything other than opt-out. I'm more concerned about the cases where you opt out of everythng, and in spite of that, you find something has taken over the home page, search engine of every installed web browser.-daddydave (December 21, 2014, 07:52 AM)
What happened to my 40? I could always depend on 40 to be the rational one, balancing out the radical Renegade, and myself in the middle!-wraith808 (December 20, 2014, 04:38 PM)
@Wraith - I think you just completely lost me there...-40hz (December 20, 2014, 06:12 PM)

^What is it with Australia (and New Zealand) lately? They went from being two of the coolest most laid-back countries in the world to being participants in the footrace race to see which so-called "Western Democracy" can be the first to fully embrace totalitarianism. So sad.-40hz (December 20, 2014, 11:14 AM)
