Also there's a free program HWMonitor that shows fan speeds and other hw info. It's been awhile since I downloaded it.  But my recollection is there's no setup needed. It should show fan speed for supported systems out of the box.

Man arrested at Olympics cycling event for not smiling.

I've actually been hassled for that during orientation by the head of security at a previous job. Why it was such a big deal that I smile for a ID badge photo I've not a clue...but the security guy went friggin ballistic about it. Hell he didn't shut-up until I pointed out that Stoicism was a religion...so I had a right to not be grinning like an idiot.

I quit the job a few months later.

I used to run into that all the time. School yearbook photo.  Driver's license photo. Finally I realized it had nothing to do with me. The guy taking the photo didn't want me to make his work look bad.  Just like the short order cook at the diner gets pissed if I don't clean the plate. Trouble is there aren't many diners around where I actually want to eat.  Can't say "who are you my dad?" since I might get banned(or even punched.) Amazing what fragile egos people have.  Me, I wouldn't give a damn if the customer licked the plate clean as long as he paid for the meal.

What's really annoying are photographers who wait until I blink before they trip the shutter.   :wallbash:

I like to use BBCeditor in tandem with Text Editor Anywhere. I have one request. Would it be possible to remove items in the Recent Files List that no longer exist? I use CCleaner frequently to clean out temp folders. It's not really important. But it is a bit disconcerting when clicking a file in the list, to get a Ding error dialog.

Thanks for the program. :)

Shu Qi stars in a fine action series, Romance of Red Dust

I watched it on DVD available on Netflix

The video quality on DVD is pretty good considering it's 4x3 TV. Very good action series. Shu Qi looks good and kicks ass. :)

One of the Japanese series I really enjoyed was Trick

They did a season 2 and 3 but by the third year the jokes to do with the foibles of the lead characters were drilled out.

Nakama Yukie plays a magician hired by a Professor played by Abe Hiroshi to debunk those who claim to have occult or mystical powers.  It's a tongue in cheek fun series.

Hmm, when I watched Wimbledon this year I thought if the Brits were ever gonna' get a champion, it would be in 2012 since they shelled out billions to host the Olympics and spent a lot in the last few years putting a roof on Center Court etc.. Murray got to the final, but lost to Darth Federer.  But it seems like my theory was only 1/2 wrong. Murray beat Roger to get the Gold. Now maybe he has the monkey off his back.

The other thing too, Comcast bought NBC. They already owned Versus channel. They call it "NBC Sports" Channel now. So with the content carrier also owning the content maybe it's too insular/incestuous?

There used to be a quaint Asian cable TV channel called "The International Channel" a few years ago. It was quaint enough that sometimes on the late late movie there'd be frontal nudity. But there were definitely a lot of quirky Hong Kong flicks shown.  Comcast bought it and "jazzed it up" renaming it AZN TV.  The shows became South Korean for the most part. A Few Hong Kong shows but very few Japanese. I think it lasted 2 years before they went chapter 11.  More of the content had English subs, but evidently the channel had less appeal.  They "modernized" it out of existence.  Some of the content was newer. But the quirky color of the channel was totally bleached out leaving only a sickly hospital white. :(

That's what I liked about many of the Asian TV series. There are long running series like the Japanese show Kinpachi Sensei, but a lot of them are mini-series.  The most common range, just from my anecdotal experience, seems to be 8 - 16 episodes.  If it's a big hit they may do a Season II or even III but usually the concept is beaten to death by then. It's more refreshing if they do 8 or 9 shows then move on to another concept.

As one example, a show about the lust for Olympic Gold, 11 episodes:

Gold

Trouble is many of the free online streaming sites get 4 or 5 episodes in, and it peters out. Maybe due to lack of English subtitles.  Many of the subbers raise hell if their subs end up on streaming sites. In this case Gold on MySoju seems to be stuck on Episode 5.

My keyboard is Lysdexic. That's why I have Control-t to transpose last 2 chars typed. I opt out because it would be way too frustrating.  'sides, I was only in the mid-20s range using a physical typewriter when I took Typing 101.  :)

Mouser you must be working on The Great American Novel(tm) !!  That's pretty high score for a guy.  There was one chick in my typing class that hit the 70 WPM range like a day after she was taught the basic keyboard drills. She's prolly up over 100 WPM now. Of course way back then, Typing Pool was a legitimate goal for entry into a business career.

I got stuck with an old Smith Corona manual with horrible action.  The Royals had a much smoother stroke. I had to mash the keys to get the thing all the way to the paper to leave a legible letter. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: SciTE regex replacement
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 05, 2012, 12:03 AM »
The main thing messing me up was putting the start of line symbol inside the pattern. I found PsPad makes it a bit easier than SciTE. This works in PsPad

find
^([a-zA-Z])

replace
_$1

and

func(param)
{
  jive()
}

func2(param2)
{
  jive2()
}

is magically transformed into

_func(param)
{
  jive()
}

_func2(param2)
{
  jive2()
}

It's a lot less confusing without the backslashes.

Thanks for your replies. In the meantime I got a response on ahk forum. Awk I could do a bit, but regex is not my strength. Easier just to write an app to read the input and spit out the output than figure this out.  Here's the solution Lexicos posted:

Ok, a more accurate representation of the problem is this

funcName(param)
{
   ; some code
}

anotherFuncName(param1, param2)
{
  ; some more code
}

thirdFunc()
{
  ; yadda yadda
}

I only want the lines that start with [a-zA-Z] to start with _(funcnameline)

and not end up with
_funcName(param)
_{
_ ; some code
_}

General Software Discussion / SciTE regex replacement
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 03, 2012, 05:21 PM »
I can't seem to get SciTE to regex replace for me. All I'm trying to do is stick a '_' in front of every line where the start of the line has [a-zA-Z].

If I use ^[a-zA-Z]   in the search field, it pics it up. But no matter what I put in the Replace field after the underscore, it replaces the first character with the underscore instead of sticking the underscore in front. I think the '^' denoting start of line is messing me up.

Seems like it should be something simple that's done all the time.  Damned if I can figure it out though.

Here's an example.  I have functions like

MyFunc(param)
SomeFunc(param)
ThisFunc(param)

After the replacement I should have

_MyFunc(param)
_SomeFunc(param)
_ThisFunc(param)

Why is it so difficult?

Hmmm, I think preemptive replacement is an excellent idea. In order to facilitate this new trend I propose any currently working Sata II or Sata III drive over 200 GB be sent to me for green disposal procedures.  I "dispose" of them by sticking in a drawer until I need to use 'em in a docking station. The "green" is what I'll save not buying drives at the current gouge prices. :)

Don't ask me the name of the file ?
I double click but only obtain an error window.

Usage: ofth filename

Accept

What can I do now ?

Going to study the commands to see what I have to understand in the script.

 :-[

See code I posted above. I shows an inputbox if no file on command line.
4192
:-[

I'll try. It seems very similar to the other one give me the error windows.

Going to study

 :P

I know the recursion works properly since I took it from a program I wrote to copy all files matching pattern in a folder tree to a single destination folder.  If you get an error it's probably the WinRar command line. You may have to fix the switches.

edit: code in previous post added InputBox if no command line filename given. So just double click if you prefer.

4193
I don't use WinRar so the command line may have to be fixed. I just gleaned it from eleman's post.

Script should be self-explanatory.  You should enter the path as well as filename or the script will start searching in the working directory.  For example, to search all folders on C: for readme.txt use C:\readme.txt as the command line arg.

edit: if no file specified on command line, Input Box asks for the file name. As noted above, the path in the file name with be the start of the folder search. Otherwise it will start in the folder where the script is.

Not tested as I don't have rar.exe installed

; run with filename on command line
; whatever the starting directory of the filename, it will recursively dig into all folders beneath
;

if 0 < 1
{
  InputBox,FilePat,,Enter File Name (e.g. C:\readme.txt)
  if (ErrorLevel)
    ExitApp
}
else
  FilePat = %1%

Loop, %FilePat%,,1
{
  tmp := _FilePathNoExt(A_LoopFileLongPath) . ".rar"
  RunWait,rar m -x*.rar -m5 %tmp% %A_LoopFileLongPath%
}

; --------- path manipulation functions - file doos not need to exist, but passing path="" tends to mess them up ----

_FilePathNoExt(path)
{
  return _FileDirWithSlash(path) . _FileBaseName(path)
}

_FileExt(path)
{
  SplitPath,path,,,ext
  return ext
}

_FileBaseName(path)
{
  SplitPath,path,,,,basename
  return basename
}

_FileName(path)
{
  SplitPath,path,filename
  return filename
}

_FileDir(path)
{
  SplitPath,path,,fdir
  return fdir
}

_FileDirWithSlash(path)
{
  return _FileDir(path) . "\"
}
4194
OpenFolderThatHas filename

Opens every folder on the drive the script is run from, that contains a file filename. May use wildcards like *.cmd or *.txt. It only accepts one argument.  filename

It opens the folder and waits until the window is closed to do the next Loop.

Edit: prompts for filename if none on command line. Enter just a filename, no drive or path (e.g. readme.txt)

if 0 < 1
{
  InputBox,filename,,Enter File Name with no path
  if (ErrorLevel)
    ExitApp
}
else
  filename = %1%
tmp := A_ScriptDir
StringLeft,drive,tmp,3
FilePat := drive filename
Loop, %FilePat%,,1
{
  tmp := _FileDir(A_LoopFileLongPath)
  ;MsgBox, 8256, Test, %A_LoopFileLongPath%`n%tmp%
  Run,%tmp%
  WinWaitActive,%tmp%,,5
  if (ErrorLevel)
    continue
  while WinExist(tmp)
  {
    Sleep,250
  }
}

_FileDir(path)
{
  SplitPath,path,,fdir
  return fdir
}

edit: I removed the "#notrayicon" so it can be killed via tray icon to break the loop. Also note that it waits until a window with the title that matches the folder name no longer exists. If you happen to have the same folder already open, it will hang. So close all explorer windows before running, or fix the script. :)

Take a look at a port of Linux find command.  Once you learn the syntax it's simple to have each result launch a command with the result itself as an argument.

But couldn't most people just fill in the blanks anyway? Most of what gets bleeped out isn't hard to guess. Especially with most comics who have what my GF calls "a one-word vocabulary."

You could say the same thing about R rated films. Some people will see them in the theater, some on pay movie channels or streaming on TV at home, and some will wait for them to be shown on basic cable. Yeah I can tell when the person uses the 'F' word on basic cable. But is my brain going to melt if I hear it without the bleep? Is it really protecting the innocent or just dividing the media into markets?

Find And Run Robot / Re: good addition to find and run robot or not?
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 31, 2012, 01:38 PM »
Hmm, it's too bad Vista and W7 don't have the Edit and Open shell extension settings the way XP had. I could see the option to display the buttons being handy if the search list item was selected.  I think it would slow things down too much to fetch the associated apps of everything in the list.  But once you click one to select it, should just be a registry look-up. Or maybe gist for an independent 3rd party hotkey thing that could pop up a gui with buttons for each appropriate function. I don't know if registry is set up for that after XP though.

It might be worth a search on AHK forum or some of the freeware sites to see if a hotkey for that already exists. If the complete path can be determined from a clipboard copy out of FARR then it's a matter of how much hassle it is to determine "default program" functions vs XP Open/Edit associations. But there might be something out there that can do it already.

edit: this post shows a start of pulling it from Explorer and using "custom" file associations from an .ini file. Could probably do something copying to clipboard off of FARR. Trouble with these type of things is some APIs like FindExecutable() are pretty much broken. Looks like a lot of Registry sifting.

You're on the right track, but at least at that point people HAD seen the schtick, so he'd be famous for X minutes to write a new one.

Only those who could afford to buy jokes survived.  New jokes that work, that aren't stolen from other comics, can't be cranked out.  Even if you look up funny sayings by "geniuses" like Woody Allen or Groucho Marx, it's unusual to find more than 5 or 6 "gems" in the pile. And that's after a whole career of insight. Guys like Carson who had to do it 5 nights a week had teams of writers that included guys like Dick Cavett. Some old ex Vaudeville guy going from town to town was known, but couldn't get any work, after being on Carson.

A lot of people complain about the "dirty routines" in comedy clubs. But when you think about it, it's job security.  Your routine can't be shown on regular TV. Or if they show it with the bleeps, people will pay to see it done uncensored.  If you do HBO or some venue where they can air it raw, then make sure you're paid enough to live on and buy new material besides.

Andy Warhol was right, but more like in a futurist sense predicting now.

I think what he was getting at was TV would be enough to do the damage. Probably among the first to feel the pain was the stand-up comic.  Going town to town playing clubs (s)he could earn a living for years from 45 minutes of decent material.  One shot on Carson and it's over. Everyone has already seen the shtick.

Likely the people who make money off notoriety now are the people who had it to start with.  Paris Hilton.. Laurence Fishburne's daughter.. tennis player Ashley Harkleroad..  she didn't stay in the top 20 very long, but she cashed in with the Playboy shoot etc..

Guess it still works for the privileged.. as one would expect. :)
