General Software Discussion / Re: Spam complications
« Last post by wraith808 on January 10, 2015, 09:40 AM »
Would anyone here have any other ideas, or any knowledge about where to find a host who offers teaching of SpamAssassin (or a similar spam-fighting program)?

I use LiquidWeb and always recommend them- I haven't had any spam problems specifically, but they've done a very good job helping and advising on a variety of hosting issues, so you might at least ask.

If the domain has not been re-pointed, then though he doesn't have control of the domain, he does still have control of what the domain is pointed to.  He didn't sell them his servers, he sold a domain name.

Huh?

I think he means if the new owner hasn't updated the DNS records then having access to the old(/current) hosting account -(or just Admin level access to the relevant CMS)- would give one free reign to play.

Exactly.

Warning... bad language at the site (even in the title of the link!)

I really don't get it. Why sell the site at all if you still want control over what happens to it? Once you've sold it, it's no longer your baby. Let it go.

Not to mention that I supposed it's possible that the new owner could sue Marko for disparaging him or for encouraging people to give it a poor rating when there's no evidence that it's being (or going to be) used for a scam.

It's too early to tell, and (for me at least) the site is small enough for it to be negligible even if the reports are to be the truth.

From what has been said so far, this looks far too strange to be true, and seeing as he still has full control of the site and it's functions...if it has been proven (by whatever evidence he may have), then why can he simply not return the money and dispute the sale...He certainly seems to be "bothered" about it enough to basically push people as far away from the website as possible...so...take that in whatever form you want to take it.

If the domain has not been re-pointed, then though he doesn't have control of the domain, he does still have control of what the domain is pointed to.  He didn't sell them his servers, he sold a domain name.

But I think it's always more difficult for those left behind (or maybe not).

Well, that's grazing THAT question again. So I think a lot of people know what side of it I am on.

Some questions, even if grazed, should be left alone, no?

Society doesn't have expectations of people. That feeling you get about what society wants is your brain trying to predict what people will like. So when you complain about society's expectations, you are either complaining that people like the wrong things or that your warped brain is misinterpreting the desires of other people. Good luck solving either problem.

Comment of the day.

Developer's Corner / MCP Second Shot (And other less obvious changes)
« Last post by wraith808 on January 08, 2015, 03:35 PM »
So, Microsoft Certified Professionals exams are offering a second shot program.

https://www.microsof...-us/second-shot.aspx

What it basically does is let you get a second shot at any exams that you fail within a certain time limit.  Generous and a good thing to take advantage of.

But when you look deeper, there's something ... troubling.

When you look at the Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) programs, there is a disturbing change.  The categories available are: Windows Store Apps, Web Applications, SharePoint Applications, and Application Lifecycle Management.

... What?

So you have no desktop certification outside of the windows store apps.

Anyone else call BS on this move?

IMO Guitar is paradoxically easier and more difficult to play than a piano or keyboard. Which is probably why some people gravitate to one or the other depending upon how their brain works.

As someone who plays both, I'd agree with that assessment.

I think I agree at a very broad level that piano theory is "easier conceptually" - a note is a note, and it doesn't show up anywhere else or morph into something else either.

Wrong on both counts... (1) the easier conceptually, which is my opinion.  (2) doesn't morph into anything else... well b/c♭ and f/e# want to have a talk with you.  ;D

UGH!! Like "Canoe" did in "My Private Idaho"?  Gag. And gag again.

You mean "My Own Private Idaho" with River Phoenix?  I just thought that it was a nod to the fact that the whole script was a retelling of Henry IV.

The Equalizer with Denzel Washington.

A solid action flick.  To me, it was very reminiscent of Man on Fire- which isn't a bad thing.  It does give nods to the original series, but actually hails more in the way of Bronson's revenge fantasy flicks.  But it does keep a brain... and a funny piece of trivia- The script originally has no back story about Robert, so Denzel Washington contributed much to the character's background and back story including Robert having obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addition to his daily physical and fight training before filming, Washington met and interviewed several real-life OCD people as to gain insights of how to play that disorder correctly.

If you're a fan of those types of movies, then this will suit you fine.

But the leadership of NK isn't exactly rational right now.

I always wonder about this. They seem to get what they want quite often, so there appears to be a method in their madness.

I do too, actually.  I know that there is a labyrinthine structure in place, even though Kim Jong-Un is revered... and I wonder if that structure is what's behind actually getting things done.

Looks fine to me - it showed two items in my system (both had display names like "clsid:etc etc"). So it runs on Win 8.1 x64 without issue.

I did the refresh a couple times, but I was scared to click the red X while I had something highlighted. Might have kicked off the self destruct sequence?  :D

Nah... that's just to exit.  I was going to get rid of the frame... but found that I like it better *with* the frame  ;D

As there hasn't been any interest in this - even to the point where there are zero downloads (which I thought there might not be), I'm releasing it as is. I've been using it at work, regularly, and it works quite well- I haven't had the need to have the always on top nor the opacity- nor any settings at all, really.

I'm open to any suggestions, but for my usage, it's pretty much done.

Way more believable than the official version.

I think it's a combination, truth be told.

Meh, disgruntled ex employee spun into publicity stunt makes way more sense than North Korea giving a shit about some silly assed movie..

...Just saying man ... Walks like a duck... ;)

North Korea has already said they cared about the movie... and considered it an act of war.  Any rational person would agree with you.  But the leadership of NK isn't exactly rational right now.

I just don't get the taxation of digital goods.  Even for *local* US municipalities, taxes aren't collected on such.

Just a few large ones I frequent: Drive-Thru RPG, Manning, Apress, O'reilly...

It's not a physical product... so I don't see why it should be treated as such.

Updated with the final release.

Sorry, wraith, I can't test this version any longer as I had to delete it from my system. I suspected that the PDF widget in there may have interfered with my PDF-Xchange Printer Lite 2012 driver. When I tried printing a PDF from MS Word today, it all came out blank, which never happened before. I can't be certain that it's your app, as I also had Acrobat Reader updated yesterday (so it could be that), but after deleting the Markdownbuddy folder and restarting the system my driver came back to life. As I said above, for me there is no value added in having the PDF save option, as I can do that myself.

I downloaded the PDF-Xchange Printer Lite 2012 driver and installed it on two different computers (my test computer and my development computer) and MarkdownBuddy didn't interfere with the driver.  I don't think that the libraries interfered with yours... though with more information I could perhaps locate something?

^I probably should have made myself clearer.

I don't think the entire thing was planned as a publicity stunt for precisely the reasons you've given.

I was talking about what I suspect was an attempt to garner sympathy from the public by pulling the movie from theaters.

Unfortunately for Sony Entertainment, most people thought that was fairly gutless. And it was only when Mr. Obama chided them for "caving" that Sony suddenly saw fit to tell us "it was the theaters" (and not very many as it turned out) whose "concerns" they were attempting to accommodate.

The original announcement they were pulling the movie was what I thought was the publicity stunt. Especially since they had no assurances they could trust that not showing the picture would stop further disclosures. They would have been crazy to think that alone would be enough to make them stop.

And now the mothership from Tokyo is taking a more active role in overseeing their semi-autonomous American subsidiary. Knowing a bit about how Japan conducts business, that seems to indicate a major management decision went wrong, and the big boys saw the need to get directly involved. That's not something they do lightly.

If heads in marketing start to gently roll at Sony Entertainment within 6 months after the dust settles, I'll be firmly convinced this is precisely what went down.

Ah, I understand... and totally agree.  Sony Japan likes to continue with the carefully calculated fiction that Sony of America is independent... and having to go against that is going to cause blood to run in the corp, I think.

This whole fiasco is looking more like a publicity stunt to me.

It's a distinct possibility.

The reason that I don't think that is because of *what* was released.  It wasn't just embarrassing to Sony, it was potentially damaging.  And not just to this movie, either.  Not worth it as a publicity stunt.
