I see it's hard to et something similar to zmail.
Thanks for the reference, tinyvillager, but fastmail is much more expensive than zmail, and it has much less space.. :(

Dr.Windows / Re: Dr.Windows Dialogs - Add Yours!

Although i never tried Dr. Windows, i've just found a site with some interesting errors: http://archive.salon...1998/02/10chal2.html
It has some pearls like:

"I'm sorry, there's -- um --
insufficient -- what's-it-called?
The term eludes me ..."

or

"Printer not ready.
Could be a fatal error.
Have a pen handy?"

This is very good news!
I'm a laptop user, so, that 5% energy use is the most interesting part for me... Of course the increase in speed is a very good bonus! ;)
In that link's page, there is also mentioned the project of having the OS booting from a flash. I had already read about it, good to know it is already out! :)

General Software Discussion / A "cheap" FTP
« Last post by jgpaiva on March 21, 2006, 01:16 PM »
Latelly, i've been starting to doubt on gmail's "stability".
After reading Allen's blog and afew more refences, i now believe that i could loose all my precious e-mail data.
So, not beeing appologist of having this kind of data stored locally, and because i don't like to constantlly save backups, i found an alternative way of doing it: forwarding copies of my e-mails to another e-mail server.
Then, a friend of mine presented me with a even better solution.

There is a portuguese reliable ftp (www.zmail.pt) that can give me 10gb of storage and e-mail accounts for 15€ per year.
Having an ftp account can be very useful, so i'm thinking about getting one myself.

The thing is: This is a portuguese server. Knowing my country as i do, i know that in informatic matters, it's always more expensive than US, for example.
So, i'm asking if anyone knows of an ftp server that has similiar atributes, but is even cheaper :D

I use Miranda. I use it for ICQ, Yahoo!, and two instances of MSN.
How about irc for DC's irc channel? ;)

2) how long are the images stored on ImageShack's  bevor they drop them?
Forever?
Don't be naive, brotherS... ImageShack doesn't guarantee you that. Even GMail can not be forever.. If we can't trust Google, who else can we trust?  :tellme: (jokin ;) )

Allen: not stable? It's way more stable than explorer, at least it was for me..
Did you "install it" i.e. set it as your shell?
If you go to process manager, do you still have explorer running?

If you install bb, it'll replace explorer, so, you'll only have it running when you explore your computer (if you don't use dopus, or something similar)

Not much time ago, i got back to explorer, only i was having an issue with farr's focus, and thought it was bb-related. BB also isn't compatible with google desktop, or any sort of programs that use their own graphic display (like rainmeter and rainlendar, those widget things).

Other than that, bb is quite complete, it's got the most awesome plugins that you should have a look when you feel confortable with it.

By what i see from your site and blog, i'd say bb is perfect for you, everything is kept very simple, it's veery fast (faster than explorer, i'd say), it's got native support for multiple desktops (which was my biggest problem when i got back to explorer), it supports extreme costumization with minimum resource use, and still, looks good :)

Wow, I had no idea there was a blackbox for windows . . . consider me, a fan of it's linux counterpart, excited.
:) I hope you like it, i personally loved it. I used it for 3 years and sure liked the experience!

That said, you can access the start menu by hitting the windows button on your keyboard, if you have one.
That could happen if i had the start menu configured, which i didn't. I removed the start menu from my menus, because it'd become too small with way too many entries, farr is just... faster ;)

Living Room / Re: Downloading your Gmail Account
« Last post by jgpaiva on March 21, 2006, 03:46 AM »
Yesterday, after reading the entry in Allen's blog, for the first time, i believed this could happen. (before that, i thought it were only anti-google hoaxes)

But i don't like the idea of using pop and reading mail locally, or doing backups.
So, i opened an account on another big e-mail provided and set the forwarding of all mails to that e-mail account.
I guess this is a good way to do things for those who don't like using POP.

Btw, does anyone know what would happen if i redirected the incoming mail on the other e-mail account to the gmail again? do you think they'd get full?

Yep, 323 users posted.

If you've got a 6-buttons mouse and like to listen to music, i'm almost sure you'll like this!
This is a script that allows you to control any player that accepts the global keyboard media keys with your mouse's buttons.
I.E., you can control windows media player, winamp (if you enable the global hotkeys), zoom player, etc, by pressing your mouse's buttons.

Of course it wouldn't make any sense to just have mouse buttons bound to those actions.
That's why the buttons are only bound if you're in "Multimedia Mouse Mode".
This means that when you press "back button"+"right-click button" at the same time, you toggle this mode on or off.
When it's off, the mouse acts as normal. When it's on, the following keys are available:

 • Back button will send "previous media track"
 • Forward button will send "next media track"
 • Middle mouse button will send "pause/play media"
 • Mouse Wheel Up will raise the volume
 • Mouse Wheel down will lower the volume

I kept right mouse button and left mouse button operational even with multimedia mouse moed enabled because sometimes you just want to raise the volume or something while surfing at the same time.

There are also other keys defined for those who don't have a many-buttons mouse:
 • Middle-Click + Right-Click activate multimedia mouse mode
 • Middle-Button + MouseWheel Down sends "previous media track"
 • Middle-Button + MouseWheel Up sends "next media track"

I hope someone will find this as useful as I do ;)

Download HERE for the ahk script.
Download HERE for the executable script.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: an idea for auto configuration
« Last post by jgpaiva on March 20, 2006, 12:31 PM »
I was talking to mouser on the irc channel about the auto-configuration, and i thought: how about lbc having community-updated groups?

I mean, who likes to configure stuff??
Why not have lists of categorized apps?

It'd work like this:
You could classify a node as self-updating.
Then, it'd check for new programs in the program files directory.
If there were some, it'd check the lists it is provided with, to find out the category of the program.
If there is no entry for that program, it'd ask for a category to be placed under.
Then, lbc would create a new icon for the app, under a menu with the name of the category it's in (if the menu doesn't exist already), and this menu would be placed on the self-updating node.

Now, the most interesting part. The category listings would be generated online, and people could update it with new categories and new apps. This listings would be available to lbc, that could have them locally, and request for updates, or be updated by the user.

The last buggy error on the tray menu leads to the preferences.
Ok, you already know what that is ;)

The skin disappears every time the double-click bug appears.
If i can't restore it with double-click, and i restore it with right-click -> restore from tray, it loses the skin.
At least, it looks this way.

Ok.. Second bug report, now about the 1.50.01 version.

Problems appeared on this version, and have mostly to do with minimizing to tray.
 • in the prior version, i'd double-click the tray icon to restore the bar from the tray, but that seems to be gone now
 • when i do right-click -> restore from tray, the skin disppears
 • try copying a tree node, and pasting it on the same root node that the one you copied was ;)
 • after you put an image on a menu, you can't remove it, can you?

Ok, i think that's all :)
