Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Syncfusion Essential Studio Suite *FREE*

because of the licensing?

Yeah. I had a client that used it. The license used to go (still does?) for several thousand IIRC.

That's the pricing... I know about that since we were evaluating them vs ComponentOne, and (still) in my opinion should have gone with SyncFusion.  Licensing implies something different to me than price, however...

RightNote has had a 3.0 for awhile.

I think one big thing is Evernote integration.

***  Anybody using it?  Your thoughts? ***
I use it.  It's ok, gets the job done.  I thought I would love that feature as a way to keep notes synced or some idea like that.  but in the end, I just don't use it much.  I do it once or twice a year when I need to search through evernote for a lost clip or something.  I think my problem is that it becomes this thought, "Do I put this note in rightnote?  or evernote?" or I'm on my phone and don't have rightnote, so i stick it in evernote to later sync with rightnote, sheesh.  So i just don't care after a while.

My point is, I don't consider the evernote functionality a big deal.  It wouldn't even factor in my decision to use Rightnote or not.

I tried it.  It's a bit... clunky, but gets the job done.  The clunkiness is a function of the limiters on the Evernote interface, rather than on Rightnote.

In all honesty, however, since I can write in Markdown in Evernote now, I've dropped using Rightnote for all intents and purposes.
I'm interested in how you use markdown, if you don't mind.

How I use Markdown in Evernote?  Or in general?

In general, as much as possible, I format all of my writing in Markdown; the plain text allows me to use several editors, and still be able to output to a common format at the end, whether that be word, pdf, or whatever.  That's one of the reasons I created my MarkdownBuddy application for NANY 2015- to be able to use plain text editors that don't really support markdown or markdown preview, but still see it's final state.

With Evernote, I use postach.io to host sites that I update semi regularly- it points to an Evernote notebook.  To write to that notebook, I use Marxico, which allows me to write directly to Evernote.  Postach.io syncs and interprets the text to create the sites.  Other editors I use are Writemonkey, Scrivener, Stackedit, Draft, Texts, and Texthaven... each for different uses cases and purposes.  But it being in plain text allows them all to operate more or less seamlessly.  MarkdownBuddy helps with that... as some of the more esoteric parsings are caught with that preview.

Not sure if that really makes sense, now that I've written it out... but it works :)

Not really.  AutoHotkey is single-threaded.   >:(

I figured as much... but figured it was worth at least asking.  It might be worth it to have a wrapper in a more robust language for tasks like this that would offload the actual long running task to a background thread...  would that be helpful?

@4wd - BTW, you spelled "Godvernment" wrong there.

I liked "godverment" more.

Especially now that so many are acting like divinely ordained beings, with godlike indifference towards their charters, rather than as legally constituted and defined bodies whose function was to serve those who created them.

So I came over here and found 1.1.5.163 and that seems to unzip all the data but epCheck does enter into (Not Responding) a half a dozen times or so.

The problem is two-fold:

  • I use the 7-zip application to handle the unzipping so while it's actually unzipping a file, epCheck can't do anything but wait.  However, most of the zips are pretty small so the waits here shouldn't affect things much.
  • The bigger issue at hand is that the TVDB.com site has been really slow lately.  Most of the Not Responding is epCheck simply waiting for the zip downloads to finish.

It's rather frustrating as there isn't a whole lot that I can do about it.  Sadly, the best advice I can give is to simply leave epCheck alone while it's doing the updates.

Is it possible to call 7-zip on a worker thread so the UI at least won't lock up?  Not sure what your limitations are, but I figured I'd at least suggest it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Beware of download sites
« Last post by wraith808 on January 13, 2015, 12:30 PM »
The title of this post is exactly what freeware authors fear -- that our software will get a bad reputation because of some bad sites.

The lesson is not to beware freeware -- it's to beware these third party download sites.

This is not what the linked article is about. The author clears that up in the comments section:

It doesn't matter what download site you use. The people that make the freeware are the ones bundling things.
Yes, some download sites make it worse by bundling on top of the bundling.
(Lowell Heddings, January 11, 2015)

That still doesn't clear it up.  Especially with the highlighted part.  That's saying the exact opposite, i.e. that the developers are the ones doing the bundling.  There are several freeware authors on this site that would never even *think* of bundling.

ALWAYS go to the source, the author of the software, to find the download.  NEVER trust a third party source unless it is directly linked from the author's web page.

The problem with this for the average user is Chrome.  Not sure if FF/IE do this also, i.e. this file is not one that (we think is) downloaded commonly, so you shouldn't download it.

I've never had problems regarding spam, so I'm not sure if I've just been extraordinarily lucky, or their spam mechanisms are that good.

Hell, that's easy enough to check ... Just send me you email address and I'll forward our corporate catch-all box to you.. :D

You'll excuse me if I don't take you up on that ;D

Oh, then I asked you how LiquidWeb is regarding spam, my main concern right now.

In all honesty, I've never had problems regarding spam, so I'm not sure if I've just been extraordinarily lucky, or their spam mechanisms are that good.  I do know now that I'm the point on several clients that I have hosted, I'd assume that if there was a problem I'd hear about it from at least *one* of them, but I haven't.  They utilize SpamAssassin on cpanel- I can tell you that.  And, as I said, when I've talked to them on any issue- small or large- I've been impressed with their response and knowledge.

I'd suggest if you're interested to talk to them about the problems that you're having before purchasing through their chat- and rate them for yourself.

As for LiquidWeb, as their prices per day are about the same I now pay per month, I realize that they are well above my needs.

If their price per day on the main page is more than you pay per month, then their lowest price would also be above... but just for full disclosure, they do have lower prices.

https://www.liquidwe...website-hosting-plan

Standard Website Hosting is $14.95/month... which is where I started when I first used them.  As my needs progressed, I scaled up to something a lot more... pricey.  But during the whole thing, the service has never changed... it's always been as good and as prompt, even when I was paying $14.95/month.
4149
But.......why?

People get entertainment from a variety of things.  So I don't think- not being that person- that the first question should be 'Why?' as is the norm these days.

One has to admire the obsession and dedication to the art of building something "because I can." I'd put this right up there with with the miniaturist who built a dollhouse with a playroom that contained a miniature version of itself accurate to the smallest detail. And within that second dollhouse's playroom was an even tinier (of necessity less detailed - but still easily recognizable) version of itself. Talk about turtles all the way down!

This is a more admirable response when the motivation is not shared, in my opinion.

How do you know they didn't get those stamps donated to them so they could do this for people?

The stamp is not an actual stamp, but an imprint stating the price as well.

Yes, but how do you know those costs are not being covered by a Third Party?

Common things occur commonly, uncommon things do not. When you hear hoofbeats, don't think of zebras.

But it's quite common for non-profits to have reduced postage rates.  Not sure if they show on the stamps... or do the standard postage rates show?
