General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Darwin on November 03, 2007, 04:43 PM »
Ironically, I find that I quite like the name SQLNotes! I seem to be in the minority... I'm slowly playing around with it and like what I see so far. Thanks for letting us in on this, Pierre

Can't hurt, Armando! I wouldn't worry too much about this, though. I've read some instructions on prepping batteries for use and they seem to imply that simply "re-prepping" them as per the original instructions will help revive Li-Ion batteries. I've also seen it written in response to charges (no pun intended) that you can kill these batteries because they have a finite number of charge/discharge cycles before they're worn out, that with normal to moderately heavy usage a Li-Ion battery will still probably outlive the hardware that it's powering. So, don't be afraid to try two or three different solutions!

EDIT: fixed a typo... and unfixed it (I need to learn to read more carefully!).

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager
« Last post by Darwin on November 03, 2007, 04:27 PM »
Crap, Don. Now you've got me drooling over the notion of a secondary monitor again - AND I JUST GOT OVER THAT ONE! Drat... It would be soooooooooooooooooooooooooo sweet to have two XYplorer windows open, one on each monitor and move stuff aro... Enough! (Darwin gives his head a good shake).

Seriously, XYplorer's implementation of tabs is awesome and extremely easy to use. I'd LOVE to see dual-pane support as well, but respect that Don's not interested in going there. What he's achieved with tabs is just as powerful - it just requires the end user to "re-learn" how to perform some file operations...

I once met a girl/woman (she was 18 at the time) who claimed to have assaulted a fellow with a knife, saying: "Get it up or I'll cut it off"... Of course, she was drop-dead gorgeous and I always thought her story was a bit contrived...

No, I tried that... to the point of inducing brain ache. No luck, I still can't remember the simplest things (like the point of this follow-up post ).

Oh yeah, don't forget to seal the battery (or harddrive for that matter) in a ziploc or something before you toss it in the freezer!

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: PhotoFiltre - excellent raster graphics editing tool
« Last post by Darwin on November 03, 2007, 03:18 PM »
Thank you for the comments, Luc and welcome to Donationcoder! Take a look at the plug-ins for Photofiltre at http://www.photofilt.../plugins.php?lang=en. There are a couple of white balance tools listed (though I haven't tried them). You're right about Photofiltre not being directly comparable to PaintShop Pro and the like, but as far as I can tell, there are an awful lot of people using it, or even Paintshop, for basic editing tasks, so Photofiltre is a cost effective and less bloated alternative for users like them.

As for PaintShop Pro, I took a leap of faith and downloaded the trial for X2 and wound up paying for an upgrade. I am pleased to be able to report that it is MUCH quicker and less resource hungry than either X or XI were.

I've been using the beta and really like the new features. Upgraded to the full release yesterday without any problems

Sorry, Armando. It's been CRAZY around my house for the last couple of days. I just threw my battery in the freezer. I'd probably discharged it to 50% before storing it... but didn't check it.

I'm with Ralf - let's see how long you can keep this going!

I'm guessing you'll wind up replacing the computer long before you hit 10,000 days, though  :(

General Software Discussion / Re: SyncBackSE vs. SuperFlexible
« Last post by Darwin on November 01, 2007, 04:20 PM »
I am not in a position to comment on SyncBackSE, either, but SFFS is everything Zaine (and Tom!) make it out to be and more. I didn't think I needed/wanted it because I have DOpus 9, which features a pretty robust folder syncher and used it daily for three years. I NEVER use it anymore, SFFS is that good.

YMMV.

So, where can I find the big red button to push and get everything I want handed to me on a silver-platter.

[please understand I have written this with some attempt at self-mocking humor and am not some clueless n00b]

Doesn't seem stupid to me...

Like Carol, I'm on Acronis True Image Workstation 9.1 and it is rock solid. I don't mind the GUI (but then I've no idea what's been done since ATI Home 9).

Yup - you're right, of course, Lashiec. The newsletter still arrives in my mailbox and lets me know which "bits" are in the paid version only. They've really downplayed its prominence on the site, though, haven't they?

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on November 01, 2007, 11:58 AM »
Yes - it is a bit alarming that they took the time to respond to my DSM but didn't even bother to remove me from the database of registered Do-Organizer users. Indicates that all is not well at GemX still... I hope they get things sorted out and back on track soon. I *think* that they've lost a significant, even HUGE, number of users over this and will likely need to build up another user base. They've a long, hard slog ahead of them. I still have a (paid for!) licence for TexNotes Pro so will continue to monitor the situation. Can't say I'm holding my breath, though.

Bizarre. I posted earlier in this thread about DSM'ing gemx to alert them to the fact that despite receiving a refund, Do-organizer 3.09 and a registration key are still available in my download area. Four days ago they replied with: "Thank you" (that's the entire response to a three paragraph missive that was entirely positive - I would have thought a refreshing change...) and yet the downloads are STILL there  :o?! Oh well, I did my bit.

You're right - this functionality IS built into most file managers. I decided to try FlagRASH and it works well. Major annoyance is the fact that it won't remember what folder you were working with (it opens to its own program directory) so you have to change it EACH time, which is VERY annoying. Wouldn't part with any cash for it myself...

I don't think that they're actively monitoring it, but there is some evidence to suggest that they've visited it in the past...
