Developer's Corner / Re: On finding partners and co-founders
« Last post by Deozaan on March 20, 2013, 10:59 AM »
A little over a year ago I was hanging out in the #unity3d IRC channel on freenode and I recognized the nick of someone else in the channel was the same as the name on a useful script I had recently found on the Unity 3D wiki. I asked if he was the same person who wrote that script, and he confirmed that he was, then told me he was working on a version 2.0 of the script and asked me if I'd like to help him test it out. Feeling fairly honored to be talking to someone whom I considered a minor celebrity, I gladly accepted his offer. So he sent me the latest version of the script he was working on.

I offered some feedback and suggestions. There was one suggestion in particular he didn't seem too convinced about, and I managed to convince him of the benefits of implementing the feature I was suggesting (and not to toot my own horn, but IMO it was the major feature that made the script simple and easy to use). But at the same time I also made my own modifications to his script (something I wanted to suggest but wasn't sure would work out, so I did it myself to test it) and submitted the changes to him. Long story made shorter, we spent about a month after that polishing up the script and started selling it, eventually becoming equal business partners in the process.

Step 1 in the “How to Convince Someone You are Awesome” is to actually BE demonstrably awesome… that means you don't just show off, talk a big game, highlight what was done in the past or point people to your amazing LinkedIn profile. Like actually be awesome in context… and show while working on something together to a potential cofounder.

I guess my point in mentioning all this is just to reinforce what that article says. My business partner was already demonstrably capable and awesome (in my opinion) when I met him, since I found his work before I even met him. And I was able to convince him that I was good enough to bring on as a partner on his product through all the feedback I gave him and the actual work I did for him (all initially for free/without any discussion of me being compensated for my contribution).

I'd never really successfully collaborated with anyone else on a coding project before, and things have gone so smoothly with him. It's been an awesome year working with him, and we've got three more projects in the works (two of which we're hoping to have ready for release in April). I consider myself lucky to have met him in such a way and had things turn out the way they have. It's been a great experience.

Cool, tomos! I didn't know about any of those.

I haven't read this thread, so many this was already mentioned, but don't forget about Windows+Tab for a 3D-ish window preview as you tab through your open windows.

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Command Prompt to Tray
« Last post by Deozaan on March 17, 2013, 03:39 PM »
Hi folks,

Every now and then I will run a batch file or exe file that essentially just displays a command prompt window while it does it's thing (think game server). However, I don't like the command prompt window taking up space on my task bar. I also don't want to run it in headless more because then there's no way (that I know of) to cleanly stop the server and close it. The only choice I know of to end something in headless mode is to end the process.

So what I would like is some sort of utility or possibly even a wrapper utility that will run the batch file and give me the option to minimize it to the tray so it is hidden and takes up less space on my task bar.

Thanks!

I think it requires root/su privileges. So YMMV.

I've added sh.com to my hosts file, since I'd rather only have to close one tab occasionally when I boot up my PC (since it doesn't launch the website every time) than have to manually switch my default browser every single time I start up. But I'd still like a better solution, if possible..

this app, x360ce, looks more reliable.

http://code.google.c...tisx360ceandhowuseIt

Searching that project, the only mention I can see of using a PS3 controller is a 3rd party DS3 called the Afterglow, and a project member repeatedly says to use MotionInJoy for that.

4143
Uh... But what if I want my default browser to open up websites in other programs?

General Software Discussion / Prevent a program from launching my webbrowser?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 15, 2013, 12:43 AM »
Sometime during the past few months I noticed that when I boot up my computer the browser would sometimes launch to sh.com. Thinking I'd unknowingly been infested with malware, I googled around for what could be causing it.

The best that I could discover is that the culprit is a program called MotionInJoy which I have been using for a couple of years which allows me to be able to plug in my Playstation 3 controllers to my PC and use them as PC gamepads. The problem is that I don't want to uninstall MotionInJoy because I want to use my PS3 controller as a gamepad, but I do want to keep it from launching sh.com when my PC starts. Does anybody have any idea how to accomplish this?

Two days ago, RPS published an article in which a Maxis insider revealed to us that SimCity does not, in fact, require the servers to run its non-regional game. Maxis reps had repeatedly insisted to the press that the game had to be online as it ran local computations on their own servers – a feature our source told us doesn’t exist at all. Extraordinarily, we’ve still yet to receive a statement from Maxis on the matter. Nor indeed have any of the rest of the games media who contacted EA for comments at the time of our story.

And now, if any further proof were needed, a modder has hacked the game to run entirely offline, and even play outside of the game’s ridiculously small borders.

Here it is:
