If my recycle bin was a toilet, it would have been spinning around leaving skid marks all over the place before finally going down.

Josh...

I have read the whole thing twice, every single page of it and I still can't locate where they say they give you anything other than the monitoring software.

Exactly where does it say you will be compensated with a copy of the software of your choice and that you can choose to receive Vista Ultimate for free? Where does it say you will be compensated in any way at all for this? And where does it say this is only for 3 months?

I am not sure what page you quoted that text from, but I can't seem find it anywhere on the site, just as you have quoted it. The only part I found is the content of that bulleted list.

Living Room / Disclosure Policy Generator for your blog
« Last post by app103 on December 10, 2007, 07:17 PM »
Blogging can be about community, technology, politics, self-promotion, big business, small business, cultural awareness or Aunt Mary's secret recipes. That is the beauty of the blogosphere, each person blogs for their own reason in their own words. Blogs are written by real people with real feelings, opinions, motivations, and experiences.

However, as the blogosphere has grown so has the financial opportunity it represents. Now more than ever Advertisers, PR agencies, political organizations and bloggers themselves are reaching out to blog owners in an attempt to gain visibility for their products, services and causes. As a reader it has been difficult to identify which blogs are influenced by these organizations and how… until now.

Disclosure Policies are designed to allow bloggers to self-identify any affiliation, payment or other conflicts of interests that may influence the content of a blog. From banner ads and paid content to free gadgets and travel, disclosure policies allow you to make your own judgement regarding the influence on content you are presented with. Bloggers provide this service to you, their reader, in order to be as transparent as possible with their blog.

Even if you accept no advertising of any kind (not even Adsense) or do not receive any compensation for your posts, you can still use a disclosure policy on your blog to state this. This site makes it easy to generate an appropriate one for your needs.

If all you have is Adsense or some other 3rd party auto-generated ads, there is an option for that too.

When you are finished generating your disclosure, it's as easy as pasting it into a post and publishing it to your blog and including a link to the post you just made on your blog's menu.

Your readers will appreciate your honesty.

Free, open source, command line app for converting png to ico:

http://www.winterdra...de/freeware/png2ico/

Sample commands are included in the short readme.

It supports transparent backgrounds and multiple icon sizes per .ico file.

Not sure if that is what you meant.

Maybe not a fortune, but when I was interviewing for a better job, the employers were impressed that I participated in NANY last year.

I wouldn't attempt to use any of the sound files found in any kind of projects, as they are most likely copyrighted.

Personal use would be ok though, like system sounds & stuff.

Also, The Icon Factory's freeware section.

Frequent updates, and gorgeous pixels.

You can't use those in your applications...says right on the sidebar of the site "The Iconfactory makes this content available only for personal, desktop use."

Who says WoW doesn’t have its uses in real life? Freely translated from the Norwegian online news site Nettavisen:

"12 year old Hans Jørgen Olsen from Lesvik in Nord-Trønderlag, Norway feels a few years older after last Thursday’s action filled encounter with the King of the Forrest. Hans Jørgen and his 10 year old sister were on their way to school and took a short cut through a meadow. Suddenly they stood eye to eye with a Moose.

- It charged straight at us when it saw us, says Hans Jørgen to Nettavisen

Hans Jørgen’s sister tried to run while Hans Jørgen stopped to try and scare it off.

Take that, all you nay-sayers that think games are bad for kids!

i'm not a programmer, but sometimes I wish I was...

You have your place on the team, and you perform a very important job. Without input from people like you, the software we create wouldn't be quite as good as it is. Thanks.

When I decided to write about DC's NANY 2008 Challenge in my blog, I decided to make it a bit more than just a simple announcement.

I felt that too many people that might read it on my personal blog (and the one for my programming chatroom) might not understand what the big deal is about this site and the community behind it.

So I set about explaining that, by telling about one of the most wonderful things about this site that isn't often mentioned elsewhere, from the perspective of both a software developer and an end user.

Living Room / Re: Wiki Spam
« Last post by app103 on December 06, 2007, 08:12 PM »
I just restored a page recently on a really nice GTD wiki, related to time management/productivity software....and had to do it again just now as I was making this post.

Someone had wiped out the entire page and replaced it with a few spam links.  :(

Luckily, it was fairly easy for any visitor (like me) to find and restore the previous last spam free version. Unfortunately, it's just as easy for the spammers to wipe it out again & again.

I am just getting tired of having to do it. It seems like I should bookmark the page with the last good version and write a script that will automate the checking of the page every hour, identifying when it has been wiped out, and automatically restoring that last good version.  :-\

Living Room / Re: Any old Amiga users among us?
« Last post by app103 on December 06, 2007, 04:16 PM »
I found this video about 2 months ago and posted it to my blog. The embedding seems not to work properly for a lot of people so I'll just give you a link to it here and repeat what I said to introduce it:

The 'New' Amiga (1988)

Originally broadcast in 1988, this 28 minute Computer Chronicles video takes a look at what was then, the brand new Amiga, and the amazing things it could do.

Considering one could own one of these for less than $1000, it made affordable to small businesses and home users, the kinds of things that once were only available to large businesses with tons of cash.

Compared to the capabilities and cost of a PC with MS-DOS 4 or Windows 386/2.1 ($5,000) or a Mac with OS2 ($4,869), buying an Amiga made a lot of sense.

SNAG-0270.png
This time warp brought to you by archive.org. High resolution copies of this Creative Commons licensed video are available for download.

I wasn't into computers when the Amiga was at its height, unfortunately. I wish I could have had a chance to have used one of these. I feel a bit deprived.

I kind of look at all Amigas, including the newer µ-A1, sort of like how a city child looks at a pony, wishing they could have one as a pet, running loose in their house.  :-*

I think part of my fondness for them is based on thoughts of what could have been and what computing life would be like now, if they had become the top dog instead of Microsoft. Just imagine how Win95 could have been if Amiga had created & released it. It probably would only have needed 2MB of RAM.  :D

GOE 2007 Challenge Downloads / Re: Evaluweight - GOE Challenge 2007 Entry

I thought this was a fantastic idea when Brett first told me about it...

But what I saw was a great tool that could be used to assist members with writing software reviews for DC.  ;)

Now what would be really great, would be if this could produce a nice table in bbcode and/or html, to make it easy to insert it into a review.  :)

Site/Forum Features / Re: Subscribe to certain posters
« Last post by app103 on December 03, 2007, 04:10 PM »
How can it update with just anybody's messages if it will only update with messages from that user's profile page? Only 1 person's messages are on the profile page.

It isn't checking the whole site for links...only the specific page we told it to, which has the user's ID in it:

<title>Latest posts of: Carol Haynes - DonationCoder.com</title>
  <link>https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=447;sa=showPosts</link>
  <description>Latest posts of: Carol Haynes</description>

That URL will not change and it will only look on that page for the posts it will report on.

And it will only include the links from the repeating pattern we 'taught' it when we selected all the links that should be included in it.

It isn't based on the forum's feed data...it is based on changes to the profile page.

This service makes feeds for sites and pages that don't have feeds. It bases it on the actual page content, kind of how website watcher looks for changes, this does too.

Give it a try for a few days and you'll see that it works just fine.
