General Software Discussion / Re: Which MP3 tagger do you use?
« Last post by Darwin on November 04, 2007, 04:42 PM »
Yes - this is what I was getting at: the annoyance of having inconsistencies introduced into my tagging system (OK that's a bit of a joke, but I'd appreciate everyone letting it pass) by mixing and matching different tagging solutions.

Brilliant  ;D. I'm sorry I missed it 16 months ago

Thanks for the link, mouser. I missed that when you posted it last year and laughed my head off reading the teaser that you included at the head of the thread. Reading it in full now - very entertaining, very close to how I work

my system. think of something that needs doing. now think of something else that needs doing that doesn't seem as bad as the first thing. do the second thing to take your mind of the first thing. repeat.

I laughed LOUD at that one
 thanks nudone

So did I, but it was bittersweet (struck a little bit too close to home...)  :P

You're so right, Tom, about people being bitchy on the forums for some of these giveaway sites. I mean, fair enough to post and comment that you don't think that the offered software is very good or to point out a bug, but posting to lambaste the GOTD team/software development team because there are cheaper or free alternatives (or you would rather they offer a networking app instead) is constipated thinking in my opinion. I mean, if you are not being asked to pay for the software offered then it is essentially free, isn't it? Take it or leave it but no one's asking you to part with any cash for it. I guess my beef comes down to the tone used by people posting some of these negative comments. What's wrong with saying "thank you, but there are better solutions elsewhere" or "the product looks good but you'll sell more licences if you bring the pricing in line with..." or something along those lines instead of the haughty, superior, and BITCHY tone that many adopt instead. Ah well... what do I know (don't answer that Tom!)?

Just to add a comment, the worst part of tagging is that you have to be REALLY careful about being absolutely committed to one solution. I use WMP 11 to organize music on my Samsung mp3 player (note: stay away from the Samsung software. It's pretty, works well, but installs a service to handle DRM which you cannot control in any way, so it just sits there gobbling up CPU and RAM  ) and occasionally run into instances where the tagging performed in mp3Collector doesn't translate well. If I do the expedient thing and perform a fix in WMP, it just compounds the problem...

I also use MusicIP Mixer which handles tagging as well. Same results as above. For now I've defaulted to using mp3Collector...

Lashiec -thanks for the link, a very interesting read (the author wasn't kidding when he or she stated that although the RFID Guardian appears simple in concept it is in fact quite complicated in practice. Very impressive). The days of tinfoil hats for all of us aren't far off!

mp3 Collector, but will be checking out Mp3tag   :o

Hadn't thought of that angle, mouser, but now that you've pointed it out, it's a bit scary. Kind of like the RFID rage with retailers who are champing at the bit to be able to id returning customers (through their cell phones, credit cards, drivers licences, etc.) and pull up their last 3 purchases from a database and provide targeted advertising on monitors throughout the store. Minority Report meets 1984. Scary.

Now that was a seriously interesting read. Their experiment turned out a bit Lord of the Flies, didn't it?

Thanks for pointing it out to us, mouser  (note the thumbsup?!).

Never did post the Quicktime/Realtime alternative link:

http://www.free-code...Time_Alternative.htm

QuickTime Alternative works, for now. As I understand it, Apple issued a cease and desist order to the developer, so I'm not sure how long it will continue to be developed/supported/useful.

Hmm... that is worrisome (and no doubt highly annoying). I don't really know what to suggest beyond a format and reinstallation... Speaking from a load of negative experiences, I'd be REALLY careful using a registry cleaner as you did - you'll like regret that in the future, which leads me back to that format and fresh install of windows. I don't suppose you have a disk image that you could restore and try this again, by chance?

Yup. Sounds familiar. I went through much the same process and am now glad to be iTunes/QuickTime free - for pretty much the same reasons!

Nice idea, Nick - a Kinetic mouse a la Seiko's Kinetic watch.

Good point, Josh. This is the stumbling block for me switching full-time to either Mac OSX or Linux. Congrats on joining the "Kilo Club" btw

Nice find, Eóin - worth a look as well. I don't really worry about security to this point (if I did want to surf anonymously and without worrying about security, I'd use a combo of Ad-Muncher's IP scramble and Sandboxie - both of which are already installed), but it's always nice to see these various options.
4094
Yeah, I doubt that they'll take the plunge anytime soon, but it would be nice to see another major player on the OS scene. If nothing else, it would give people something else to argue about!
4095
You missed a golden opportunity there, Chris: you've got the mouse thing "wired"  :P
4096
I have it at about 20... but your description is certainly familiar to me. Modern home offices are mazes of wires and the greatest stress of modern life has got to be trying to untangle and make sense of them! Hate them, hate them, hate them... Everything that one does today requires two or three cords and a dongle. Necessary evil, I guess. I'd go bluetooth but I'm not overly fussed by it, either! Why? Because right now manufacturers are charging a premium - often big premiums - for bluetooth devices and I'm sick of buying new hardware (and the need to run software to manage my bluetooth connection in the background doesn't thrill me either. I just managed to get rid of my wired keyboard, for instance, and I've three wired mice gathering dust. Can't afford to change over hardware yet again, either.

Found Deals and Discounts / Tor - The Onion Router
« Last post by Darwin on November 04, 2007, 08:54 AM »
If you're worried about internet security and the footprint that you leave as you wander the net,  Free Download a Day is highlighting The Onion Router today. This FOSS app promises to provide you with a truly anonymous "presence" on the internet. There are shareware apps that do the same thing (Anonymizer and Ghostsurf spring to mind) but this one promises the same functionality for free.

Resistance is futile, Nick. You will be assimilated.

I wouldn't take it that way, Curt. I think that beta's installer is just checking for the latest "full" release - if you've run the Adobe uninstaller first, Flash Player should well and truly be GONE!
