I think the main lesson of this thread is to make your thread title very clear and accurate ;)

sounds as if our member vlastimill's batch picture resizer should do the job: http://www.rw-design...r.com/picture-resize ?

Nope, maybe I should ask him about it though

I've only tried a couple:

Crows are quickly becoming one of my favorite animals.

That was fun

That lead me to another hooded crow (& cat) one that I posted in the animal friends thread.

The grey (or hooded) crow is very wary in Ireland. Probably cause it used to get shot a lot by farmers (not sure why, I'm a townie myself).

These two have an unusual kind of friendship

then again, maybe it's not that unusual :-\ And maybe being grumpy is just the cat's game.

If you're open to the idea, I could easily write you a proxy script that would accept your shortcuts, extract the path to the actual image file, and then pass that path to an existing resizing app.  How does that sound?

sounds very good to me skwire :)
4081
Never encountered a situation like that with shortcuts but worth a try may be? ImBatch

Thanks for the suggestion, but no joy there either. I suspect it's problematic in general...
I mean, I may have to just copy the images instead of creating shortcuts.
4082
I'm looking for a photo resizer that follows shortcuts:
ideally one that will follow multiple shortcuts - also supporting drag and drop.

I have a folder with lots of shortcuts to images in various locations (this may have been a bad idea, but I dont want to have to do it again!).
I'd like to be able to drag/drop these shortcuts onto a software that'll resize the images.

I've only tried a couple:
  • Vlastimil's Picture Resizer (dc link) - I get an error with shortcuts
  • Resize ('Created by Peter Bone') - site no longer online, I've used it for years, it's a great portable app - but it cant handle drap n drop nor shortcuts.
  • Ren's Photo Resizer (dc link again - only supports individual files)

thought I'd ask for advice at this stage,
TIA!

DC Gamer Club / Re: Hurry...Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tacticst for free at GOG
« Last post by tomos on December 13, 2013, 04:25 PM »
Some more info:

One of today's big deals is: Fallout, Fallout 2 , and Fallout Tactics are all FREE!  - https://secure.gog.c...ay_winter_promo_2013

Note that there's a strong rumor that these titles will no longer be on sale on GOG after the new year due to changes in ownership of rights to the games. So get 'em while you can, and get 'em while they're free. (If you've purchased a title, the download remains in your account even after GOG no longer sells it - at least that's been true so far)

Understandably, the site is getting hammered.

Update:

It looks like the link to the free Fallout offers has been taken off of the GOG home page.  It also looks like the direct link above still works.  The site seems to be a bit better but is still pretty flaky, so I'm not sure how easy it'll be to get through the checkout process - or even if the offer might be cancelled (it looks like it was planned to be for today and tomorrow).

My problem is:
For years I've been using Gmail + POP3 to Thunderbird -
the mail is organised in Thunderbird - and is *not* organised in Gmail :(

So, in order to change anything, I'll have to organise all that stuff in gmail....
Guess I could just start a new Tbird profile for 2013 onwards, and delete the rest from a new organised gmail+Thunderbird IMAP.
Dump a copy of everything onto Outlook.com as a backup first :-\

« Last post by tomos on December 13, 2013, 03:59 AM »
Sounds very interesting

I often find myself making notes here or there, an app just for this would be good.

Would it be worth trying to categorise the reports? GUI/etc/etc - mmm, unsure here. But some could be just suggestions for improvments rather than bug reports. Or feature requests.

Some way of prioritising would be good - especially when first using an app, I tend to make a list of bugs/suggestions/requests. And reporting can be time-consuming.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture Delay!?
« Last post by tomos on December 13, 2013, 03:51 AM »
Questions:
  • 1) do you mean you are using an older version?
  • 2) when you say click on the SC icon - which icon do you mean?

My advice would be to use a shortcut to take a screenshot - even then there is slight delay, but only a fraction of a second.
Or pause the film?

Interesting - haven't seen it myself. I have seen some of the options greyed out - I dont know if this is because YT is overloaded and blocks the higher quality versions - or if it decides that your connection isnt good enough to handle them.

This has definitely happened to me. Whether or not youtube is making the choice, based on a hiccup in connection or something more accurate, is another question  :-\

I've usually seen this at peak times, which would argue for an overload somewhere along the line.

^ I think I led the way earlier deo, by missing the point of the OP.
Which is that some videos are downloadable in higher quality than the maximum one that Youtube shows.

But as Curt points out:
it would help a lot if you can supply us with a link to one of such videos.

I've never heard of "videos having a resolution higher than the maximum one that Youtube shows"

It happened to me more than once.
For example, on September, YoutubedownloaderHD and YTD downloaded two videos 360p while Youtube showed 240p as the maximum.
Yesterday it happened again with another video.

Interesting - haven't seen it myself. I have seen some of the options greyed out - I dont know if this is because YT is overloaded and blocks the higher quality versions - or if it decides that your connection isnt good enough to handle them.

Apologies - I see now that your OP question was why this is the case.
I'd like to know why the programs to download videos from Youtube can download videos having a resolution higher than the maximum one that Youtube shows.

As a simple example, in Youtube we may choose a maximum resolution of 360p but a download program can download even the video of 480p.

Living Room / Re: Does anyone here use Bitcoins?
« Last post by tomos on December 12, 2013, 03:39 PM »
^Thanks for clarifying.

Next: I'm wondering why you're so sure that Bitcoin will retain that reserve currency role?
In a world where there are ever more crypto currencies.

It's comparable to the current system - with the big difference that Bitcoin is limited.
Number of crypto currencies is not limited, so they will just fight it out and some will be successful, some not.
That could work out fine if one remains strong. But I'm struggling with 'why' - why Bitcoin? Simply because it was first? Is that good enough for the long haul?
I'm not convinced. And I'm not sure why others are.

I know it's an experiment and all that. And I suppose most people buying bitcoin arent particularly interested in the long term. And the best laid plans of anyone can take unexpected turns, so no-one can predict. But I kind of wish there was something more there - was this scenario (competition) considered by the creator(s)?

DownloadHelper - addon for Firefox was recommended here.
I have it but use it so seldom I couldnt say much about it. The choice can be confusing at times, but it's usually easy enough to figure out the best option.

AFAIK WYSIWYG = if a high quality video is there on YouTube, you'll see it on the video itself.

Weren't we all grumpy about the ails of Outlook the local program back in the day? So Gmail is good ol' Gmail, "now with more spying." So what's preventing Microsoft from pulling something sneaky?

Yes, part of the paid version of Outlook.com is that it's "ad-free". So I kind of presume it's there already (but havent looked at the T&C).

[edit] Ed Bott says: "There’s no such thing as a free lunch, of course. The web version of Outlook.com includes unobtrusive ads that appear to the right of the main email window. Those ads are not context-sensitive: the advertising engine does not use the contents of the current message or other messages in your mailbox to determine which ads to display, as Gmail does. Incoming and outgoing messages do not include ads." link [/edit]

Bitcoin = world reserve crypto currency

I'm not sure I understand: what would being a 'world reserve crypto currency' involve?
I cant quite tie it in with the current definition of a reserve currency a la http://en.wikipedia....iki/Reserve_currency.
