I've owned many different makes and models. Both foreign and domestic. But in English they were all named "shitbox."

Too bad - glad it's stable here

I don't trust CRT-hostile software. To me it's all part of the scam to try to get people to upgrade the monitor for no real reason.  I haven't looked at the specs for a few years. But the last time I looked flat screen performance sucked compared to much cheaper CRT monitors.  Maybe it's different now. But I don't have hundred dollar bills to light my cigars. Fortunately, I don't smoke. :)

Enough of the caddy remarks!  :-[

I'm sure you two will be able to iron it out eventually. ;)

I don't know... both of them seem to have a chip on their shoulders.

Hmmm, I'm shocked at all the rough comments on this thread. :)

^ an important point is that it allows you to block those analytics as well. But I guess people realise that...

What I found interesting is that it showed that google analytics were 'working' here, in spite of the fact that I opted out with google, and in spite of having google's "Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on" installed in Firefox.

But now it's blocked :up:

I'm convinced those "do not have tele-marketers call me" lists are just a sneaky way to gather call lists. No sense making it easy for 'em by volunteering my phone number. :)

Hmm, I don't think that's a fair way to reply. :)

Thanks for the replies. SKA, thanks for the links. I was thinking of checking out the service thingy. Windows Services applet it really a "pane" to use. :)

Edit: Just for grins I checked out NirSoft. There's a service utility that doesn't require install. I use a lot of NS utilities and trust 'em.

http://www.nirsoft.n.../utils/serviwin.html
edit: one cool thing I see, Control-f you can search on service name. Faster than scrolling and looking. :)

Not to disparage the Puran software. I've been using the defrag for years. It's great. Fast defrag without overkill.

I noticed Puran Utilities 1.0.2 announcement. I regularly use Puran Defrag. But I never tried any of the other tools. Is anyone using it regularly? If 2 or 3 of the other utilities are good then I'll give it a try.

Go Go Thread Hijack! You are all sentenced to write puns until you pass out!    :P

Hmm, reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode where the dead gangster thinks he went to Heaven. Every time he rolls the dice, he wins.  Every pool shot, no matter how difficult, he sinks it.  Roulette always comes up with his number.  Then Sebastian Cabot informs him he's in Hell, not Heaven.

It's fun to make puns. But not forever! :)

The "black on black" was a joke. The point being I can't read it. So I can't tell you the colors. I can only see text if I highlight by dragging the mouse. At any rate, it's going to tell me that the sites I visit use analytics. I don't see the point of getting the same information over and again. It was crash prone when I tried it maybe a year ago. It's crash prone now. It's gone from my machine.

If you have flat screen I guess there's contrast on those funky color combinations. On CRT it's black on black crime. :)
Humm, CRTs tend(ed?) to have better color range and contrast than flat panels (but yes, my monitors are flat) - you'd have to be using a pretty poor CRT for the ghostery bubble to come up as black-on black. Perhaps the transparency somehow messes up on your system? Here's how it looks on my system, with the hex color code for the background added to the snapshot:
 (see attachment in previous post)

I don't think it's just me. A lot of sites use color combinations that put the whammy on CRT users. That's why Zap Colors bookmarklet was written. In any case it's academic now. The thing is too crash prone to leave active. I'm sure it must slow things down analyzing invisible pixels.

Thanks for the insight. I did see some stuff of interest when looking through the PS stuff a while back. I've seen many scripts use a shell object to do stuff. Only thing is I noticed they tend to be too slow for polling. They work pretty well if you have an active window and want to know who owns the window or what folder the window represents, but if you try to use the functions in a monitor that checks every window as it becomes active it tends to bog. Still, it's probably the easiest way to do desktop object stuff like shell special folders etc..

I just wish they came up with a simpler syntax. Yet another learning curve. :)

Glad you got it to work. :)

Is this for W8 only? Or is it meant to be portable across Windows versions? I'm not sure about PowerShell as I could only force myself to read about it for 5 minutes. Something about the syntax turned me off. But there's probably stuff you can do with it that would be more difficult with other script types.

If "Command" is not wrapped in double quotes when containing spaces, such as a path under Program Files, I could see problems. This function might help

;returns string, wrapped in quotes when containing spaces
;updated to test if string already wrapped in double quotes
_WrapQuotes(str)
{
  wqLeftChar := ""
  wqRightChar := ""
  if (!str) || (!InStr(str," "))
    return str
  StringLeft,wqLeftChar,str,1
  StringRight,wqRightChar,str,1
  if (wqLeftChar = """") && (wqRightChar = """")
    return str
  str := """" . str . """"
  return str
}

The thing I like about the Bruce quote is that anyone who has been there, even for a traffic violation, knows exactly what he means. You meet your attorney in the hallway and that's where the deals are made. The courtroom session is a formality unless you can afford to be represented by a high powered law firm a la OJ.

If the legal system was infallible, and the amount of money didn't factor into the level of law and punishment (notice I didn't say anything about justice.. there's none of that in the legal system),

...

Lenny Bruce put it concisely, “In the halls of justice, the only justice is in the halls.”  :)

Hmm, speaking of prisoner punishment, I hear prisoners are forced to perform labor previously reserved to the private sector such as working phone banks for customer service outfits. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich may seem tame compared to taking customer complaints from mothers with squalling infants on their laps. Unless the criminal committed crimes in the heinous top ten I'd say give the dude 10 hours off good behavior for every hour working that gig.  I bet most prisoners would prefer to pick cotton. :)

Its seems the 8th Amendment does not proscribe cruel punishments as long as they are not also unusual. I think when translated to everyday language it means that the authority has been getting away with the particular cruelty in question for many years. So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
