Got a link to an emoticon set you like better? I personally like the set used at DC a lot, they're simple and clean and small.

Living Room / Re: does win XP 64-bit suck?
« Last post by f0dder on January 16, 2009, 06:44 PM »
You're probably not going to need 64bit - and you probably won't feel the difference between utilizing ~3.5GB of RAM vs. 4GB with Win64.

You could go for 32bit XP now, and switch to 64bit Win7 when it comes out :) (while the driver situation is OK for XP64 these days, it seems to be somewhat better with Vista/Win7).

Sounds like a bunch of major wankers to me. What's supposed to be so great about it anyway? Certainly isn't going to be lighter on resources than the explorer shell, considering it's written in dotNET.

It would be easy making a plugin for Notepad++ that has a limited version of your desired selection-mode: dropping a start-marker would provide no visual clue of your selection range, and once an end-marker is placed you'd be back to the usual "Any other keypress loses selection". If NP++ has the other features you need and you can live with this limited thing, let me know and I'll take a look at plugin creation.

Hm, still very sketchy on details.

Excellent! I finally can get this off my chest:

We should find a better forum software than SMF. Their code is apparently very very solid, but I do not like their license model.
Who gives a fsck about license model? It's a solid forum with good features, and it's had a very low amount of exploits compared to some of the other junk on the market - that is important.

Hm, there's no description of this "TurboUSB" available anywhere whatsoever? No indication whether it's smart firmware, or a specific app for file copying? Sounds fishy to me. Also, encryption software isn't a selling point either, you shouldn't really use anything but TrueCrypt on Windows...

--There's no lock-in mechanism.  The tray just goes in and out.  Like, if you tilt it, the tray will start sliding out.  So the only thing holding it in is the sata connection between the drive and the enclosure.  Not a big deal, since everything's a tight fit.  I don't plan on tilting it and swinging it around anyway.
Sounds like a very bad design decision to me, unless the enclosure supports hotplug and is specifically made for easy disk swapping.

You could probably install grub/whatever on a floppy or MBR, and use that to boot from external media, though?

Darwin: afaik, Win7 is mostly user-mode enhancements, not really much new stuff happening kernel-side (although the window manager got an overhaul and now makes better use of video card memory?). Releasing it as a new OS is probably a bit of a stretch, but it seems like more than just a service pack to me.

Worked fine.

vLite grinding away...
Looking forward to hear about your experience - how much did it reduce the final ISO size by?

Edvard: 2.2 has Javascript, but no option to turn it off. I like Sumatra because it doesn't have the insanely-slow-rendering-on-x64 that FoxIt (at least 2.2) has... but it's been too unstable for me, unfortunately. And yeah, definitely no browser plugins for me, I hate having various document types render in-browser.

That said, I don't know how much functionality Foxit Reader exposes, so it could be that it's vulnerable, and it might as well be that it isn't.
But why take a chance? Can you see any reason NOT to turn it off?
Indeed - I don't have a use for JS in PDFs, so I might as well do that... except JS can't be turned off in foxit :). Mailing them might be a good idea.

I don't use in-browser PDF anyway, so the exploit would have to be able to download+launch an external file - and it would have to be able to do that in spite of noscript+adblockplus.

Apparently, javascript delivered via PDF is the prime suspect in this case. So that means if your pdf reader supports embedded js, it is a vulnerability.
App's post reveals that Foxit does indeed support javascript, so make sure you've got that turned off.
There's javascript and there's javascript - you don't necessarily need to expose filesystem writing capabilities to the scripting engine.

That said, I don't know how much functionality Foxit Reader exposes, so it could be that it's vulnerable, and it might as well be that it isn't.

Whatever floats your boat - I'm personally not a fan of admuncher (probably works fine, but I only want adblocking in my browser, I don't like the idea of global winsock hooking). Besides, AM only blocks ads, right? You could get exploit-triggering outside of advertisement frames...

A sheet of paper with a child's finger painting, held to a wall with scotch tape will never be appreciated by the masses* as much as that same finger painting in a fancy frame.

*parents always appreciate it more than strangers
That's wonderful, app :) - I bet they wouldn't even have considered putting the stuff on display if they'd known the artist's age beforehand.

I do prefer frames to scotch tape, but that's as much to do with visual representation as well, as keeping the painting in good shape. Couldn't care less who made something if I enjoy looking at it, though.

Hm, interesting idea wrt. thumbnails-for-buttons, but I think it would get messy quickly. It could be relatively difficult to distinguish between running apps, unless you have huge previews. I certainly wouldn't like it as a default - but could be an interesting option.

OK, the slysoft VirtualCD app works like a charm

So, next thing: how do I manually add things to "run at startup"? The usual procedure of opening the "StartUp" folder from the start menu and creating shortcuts doesn't work - Win7 won't let me add shortcuts there.

Thanks for the tip, justice! I managed to get VS2008 installed though - the ISO is on my linux fileserver, so I mounted that through a loop device and exported it under /tmp , and fortunately the VS2008 setup can handle UNC paths (and doesn't require being installed from a CD/DVD media).

But the slysoft app could come in handy for other apps :)

Yeah, thanks for the linkt, nontroppo - there were a few nice things there.

Btw, I really love the new taskbar. It might be *cough* inspired *cough* by OS X (although I think the jumplists and other stuff goes beyond that?), but I don't really care. The important thing is that it's a good step forward, and that it finally feels right to dock the bar to the edge of the screen rather than the bottom.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a virtual-cd application that works with Win7 yet. MagicDisc installs, but hangs when you try accessing the virtual CD (fortunately only hangs the app that tries accessing, but that's bad enough if you use explorer for file managing). Daemon-Tools doesn't even install, but at least you get a warning that it's incompatible. This sucks a bit since I install most of my software from ISO images - the original discs are in safe storage.

edit: obviously virtual-cd stuff is not needed in vmware, since that has the capability built-in. But I've done an install to real hardware, on my testbox (core2duo [email protected], 2x1024meg DDR2-800 ram, old and not superfast 160gig maxtor SATA drive). The install took 27 minutes from initial boot until the desktop was ready, the system seems to run great (although I have to install and test stuff like Visual Studio :)), and the Experience Index gives the following stats:
Processor: 5,8
Memory: 5,5
Graphics: 4,0
Gaming gr: 3,4
Harddisk: 5,2

Yeah, onboard intel IGM graphics - but Aero feels very smooth on it.

Cute :)

I'm not that fond of the visual style of the robots though, and sound effects could have used a bit more work (like, when falling and hitting the floor). I'm not sure what to think about the "balls" thing - is it funny or just too corny? The "upgrading to WinXP" was silly.

But other than that, a great little piece, and some nice transforms and terminators clichés there - I hope they make a few more.

Keep in mind that if you're not being retarded about your internet security (meaning: keep your LAN NAT'ed, do not use DMZ, and keep Windows Firewall enabled) you shouldn't ever be hit by this (and similar) problems.

Doesn't mean it's not a good idea to patch, though.

It sucks that you have to download WAIK to use vLite - I'm pretty sure it's only one or two DLL files it needs from that package (or something similar). nuhi probably did it this way to avoid getting into redistribution trouble with Microsoft... I'm attaching the files I think are necessary here, try unpacking them to your vLite install folder. I hope it's not a problem posting them here, honestly I can't see the problem in doing so - but moderators, feel free to remove if you don't approve.

Wrt. bootsector getting installed if you mark partition as active, that sounds reasonable.

Deozaan: oops, still haven't updated document wrt. that :-[

Anyway: if you run ANSI Notepad++, you want ANSI plugins. Same way for UNICODE. If you don't need super-funky characters in filenames (like Chinese of Russian), ANSI build of NP++ is just fine - and does support those fancy character in your documents, just not in the filenames.
