Post New Requests Here / Re: So, about wallpaper changers...
« Last post by tomos on December 26, 2013, 01:43 PM »
Windows 7's Fit option does enlarge pictures which are smaller than the desktop, and that's exactly what the Scale option does in this program.

How does Fit differ from the Scale option already in the app?  If I choose an image smaller than my screen resolution, and have Windows apply it using the Fit option, the image is enlarged.
-
sorry for the confusion people:
The option I wanted doesnt seem to exist at all for windows: Dont enlarge, but reduce if necessary.
Oh well...

Many thanks for the other options Skwire - will make it easier to change things.

Just trying this again (build #28), three queries/requests

1) is it possible to add the option "Fit"? This reduces larger images to screen size - but doesnt enlarge anything.
(The Windows 7 options are Fill / Fit / Stretch / Tile / Center.)

2) would it be possible to change the browse dialogue, to an open file type one. More info here:
-

The Browse window - I hear you and I will be redoing it shortly. Though I am so NOT looking forward to it. But regarding the file dialog - got an example?

For instance SourceTree, when I click one of the '...' buttons to select a folder, I get a dialog like the one to select files, but one that lets me select a folder:
 (see attachment in previous post)

Would you look at that ... apparently it's a standard Windows dialog, just a (much) less popular one.
Here's a code for it just in case if anyone else needs it - http://code.msdn.mic...nFileDialog-17b20409

3) I'm wondering would it be possible to disable a folder rather than have to delete it. If #2 above is implementable, this would not be of such big interest :-)

Living Room / Re: Post Your Year End Top 5/10 List Here
« Last post by tomos on December 26, 2013, 09:11 AM »
Not organised enough in terms of reading or viewing to easily give a best-of list.

So,
I went through CHS and searched for quotes I had copied from mouser's PopUpWisdom this year - and picked out 10. Think they all from the "Philosophy" book.
Tbh, I'm unsure of this idea - lists of quotes can often be very kitschy and/or moralistic/idealistic/unrealistic I find :-[ - but will try to avoid all that (and stfu) and let you read:

# A neighbor came to Nasrudin, asking to borrow his donkey.  "It is out on loan," the teacher replied.  At that moment, the donkey brayed loudly inside the stable.  "But I can hear it bray, over there."  "Whom do you believe," asked Nasrudin, "me or a donkey?"
[I always have to smile at this one]

# Go outside. Shut the door.
[when this one pops up, I mostly do go outside - and it usually helps]

# Breathe more deeply

# You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
--Mahatma Gandhi
[may come across as a bit clicheed, but that one does get me thinking (what/why/how/whatever)]

# Standards are different for all things, so the standard set by man is by no means the only 'certain' standard.  If you mistake what is relative for something certain, you have strayed far from the ultimate truth.
-- Chuang Tzu

# Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
-- Jean-Paul Sartre
[in the 'free world', this makes sense to me - might not under other cirumstances, I dunno]

# Perfection is reached, not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.
-- Antoine de Saint-Exupery
[I really do believe there is a lot of truth in this one]

# "It's today!" said Piglet.
"My favorite day," said Pooh.
[Yaah! :p]

# Facts are the enemy of truth.
-- Don Quixote
[must read that book sometime]

# If there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life.
-- Albert Camus
[maybe a bit heavy to end with - but it can be an easy thing to do...]

aaaand as a bonus -
the kitchiest quote from the 'book':
The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears
 - if that doesnt draw a tear to your eyes, be grateful ;-)

^ got that from you saying you should "be able to whip up a prototype pretty quickly".

On another note, I *think* I came across an image that is stretched with the "Scale" setting - but I cant find it in the folder (should have started with a smaller sample). [edit] found the image, it was laready stretched, so no problem there [/edit]
Where the path to file would be very helpful. (Is the new version up yet?)

I'm also wondering now if it would be worthwhile/possible to add sorting, as well as random. Could [in theory] be done like trout: list/repeat-list/random/shuffle. Or more like a file manager: by-name/by-date/random/shuffle.
(More of an idle idea than a personal request.)

Nice app!
I actually thought it didnt work, but then I realised I had to click "Enable Wallpaper switching" at the bottom :-[
I'll bet that's why you made that button so big - so as I wouldn't miss it. (But I still managed to...)

The resizing is being done quite well.
Last requests from ConstanceJill sound very good

A word on Accents. King's accent is closer to "Received Pronunciation". Martin's is a different kind of dialect. (Northern? Half-Cockney without the slang?)

No expert here, but Martin's is more London (reminds me of the snooker player Steve Davis). King's seems more generic ('Essex'?), but I'll restate that I'm no expert ;-)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Tray Management Utilities Mini-Review

In recent weeks my system tray has started acting up. It would stop displaying a whole lot of icons for software that are otherwise running. This is occurring randomly, i.e. after some rebooting or waking up the system tray either works properly or it doesn't.

I had that problem over the last couple of months with 7 x64 - seems to have stabilised now though FWIW. I did install a bunch of non-critical windows updates lately. Maybe one of them helped, but I really dont know.
4036
^ choosing to focus on that, rather than the comments on your approach, doesnt help much either.

can you sell on the 3 year Online Armor subscription?

See elsewhere [...]
ah go on - give us a link :D

If you read my posts on Bitcoin, you'll see that I'm very dubious about it, especially in the light of the glut of other crypto currencies - but that doesnt stop me being disappointed by the quality of Krugman's dismissal of it.
4039
^you start very diplomatically (good disguise) but that is a very dubious first post

Oh yeah - just btw - I didnt see anyone objecting to the idea of offering an 'upgrade' to a competitor's product.

Economist Paul Krugman on why he's not a fan of bitcoin:

http://www.nytimes.c...s-and-barbarism.html

There's a lot of fundamentalism amongst the supporters of gold-backed currencies, and there's a lot of demonisation of fiat currencies out there too. Krugman's arguments against gold-backed currencies, while brief, are very persuasive. But to completely slate Bitcoin simply because it is a reaction to fiat currencies - or worse: simply because it is supported by people who are disillusioned with economics as practised today? That does not convince.

Bitcoin seems to derive its appeal from more or less the same sources [as of gold-backed currencies],
[...]

But don’t let the fancy trappings fool you: What’s really happening is a determined march to the days when money meant stuff you could jingle in your purse.

^ comes across simply as rhetoric. I'm disappointed.

On another note, he mentions regulation - imo, that's where things started to go really wrong (I believe around Reagan's time they started freeing the banks of regulations).

I had intended to post a christmas song -- heard a couple of nice 'new' ones lately (new-for-me + a couple of hundred years old probably) .
But somehow I'm posting this instead   :-\ :)

Black Rose (English Sub)~ Gumi
The lyrics are quirky, translation seems quite good, but does seem to lose the plot occasionally. I like "sell off a scattered conclusion". (But I'm posting it just cause it's catchy.)
4043
I agree it's nasty. And it's certainly not my style. It's the first time I did this in 16 years. But, what you probably don't know, this little campaign is running at least since September 2013:

Remove the animal to make the link work: http://<kangaroo>www.gpsoft.com.au/dscripts/compupgrade.asp

Tit for tat, as they say. ;)

That explains a lot.

You have a great file manager. In ways I prefer it to Dopus -- I prefer Dopus in other ways. I use both. I'm not forced to choose, but I do always think twice about upgrading Dopus due to the upgrade pricing. I think it's fair enough to offer a whatchamacallit 'cross-over upgrade' from Dopus to XY.
But abusing it publicly is just bad publicity for you (unless you believe that any publicity is good publicity).

wait.. you mean the Finnish language is a real thing?  I thought it was a made up language like Klingon..

I thought it was a language invented on the Muppets.
But on searching, I discovered that was Sweedish :D

^thanks Innuendo, I missed the point there completely.
I was thinking along the lines of dBpoweramp becoming almost a sentient being (which I quite enjoyed).

It's strange how it works with 'it' :-\
With names, the apostrophe is used for possessive, but not with 'it'. I'm sure I've heard that before (on dc even, I think) but it's the kind of thing I promptly forget...

with apologies for veering off-topic:

I am not English, but even I can see, this is wrong:

dBpoweramp integrates it's self with Windows Explorer

that's actually an interesting one:
it's not grammatically incorrect - but it's more like saying:

dBpoweramp integrates it's true self with Windows Explorer
or
dBpoweramp integrates it's "consciousness of it's own being or identity" with Windows Explorer
or
dBpoweramp integrates it's "total, essential, or particular being" with Windows Explorer

definitions (in quotation marks) are from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/self

that's pretty much my reaction to most graphics tools.  Even if I think I know what they are I probably don't know how to use it

I've used a few and still struggle with new ones...

This one looks very user friendly:

Fotor is well worth a look, it does sophisticated things really easily, perfect for someone who knows what they want but don't want to get bogged down in menus.

http://www.fotor.com/windows/index.html
To do an online test-drive:
  • go to the link
  • click on "Features" on the top bar
  • Start with Basic Edits >Tap Enhance => then click "Get Started Now". A flash window will open with the tools/options on the left-hand side
  • you will have to repeat steps to try out some of the different aspects

IIRC Paint.net gets recommended for ease of use as well, but havent tried it myself.
