Point Motivator / Re: Ways to use Point Motivator: goal for defined period
« Last post by mouser on January 21, 2017, 07:47 AM »
Hi Ignatius.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with it.  I must say it doesn't seem the application ever really caught on much, so you may be one of a small handful of users.

The first thing to do is go and make a copy of and backup the data files with all of your items and data.
SO go and copy (zip) the entire directory of "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\DonationCoder\PointMotivator" and put that copy someplace safe.

Ok so now there are two things for us to look at, the "PointMotivator.ini" file which is all your generic settings.
And the "UserItemDefs\myitems.itemxml" file which contains all your created items and data.

If you have nothing sensitive you could email those to me to have a look ([email protected]).

If there are sensitive items, you could just open those files in a text editor and see if you spot anything unusual.

You could (after having made a backup!) try exiting the program and deleting your PointMotivator.ini file and restarting, to see if the problem was just a weird setting that got corrupted.

If that doesn't solve it then hopefully it's just a matter of some item in the xml file got a value that is triggering a bug and we can track it down and fix it.

The worst case scenario would be if your myitems.xml file got completely corrupted or erased somehow, so that would be the other thing you can check in a text editor.

I think the original idea of letting a central manager set the quote is a nice one.  could be done simply by having the central manager (or as many people as you want) be able to update a web page (or twitter account, etc.), and have client apps fetch from there.

does the slowdown still happen if you select a very small region?

Well I wouldn't say there are no concrete steps -- it's just you could write all the facts and steps and procedure out on an index card.  And you could sum them up basically by saying that you should:
1) create an emergency fund for emergencies.
2) get super focused on paying off all your debt as soon as humanly possible -- change your lifestyle dramatically to do so if need be; pay off smaller debts first for the psychological benefit.
3) after 1+2 are done, start saving 15% per year for retirement.

Again, don't get me wrong, if you need this motivation, i think it's well worth it to read the book even if those are the only concrete steps you get out of it.

I'm not knocking the book -- it is what it is -- it's not an investment strategy book, it's mostly a motivational book (imho).

But the financial problem for many of us is really a mental habit behavior issue you are trying to fix, so whatever you need to do to get yourself motivated is worth it.

I read the Dave Ramsey book (Total Money Makeover).  I would classify it as more of a motivational book than an information book..  It's basically written to wake you up to the urgent need to get absolutely dead serious and focused on eliminating all debt, and shake some sense into you about getting deadly serious about making a major life-changing commitment to budgeting your money.

It's short on facts and details, but if you can benefit from the motivation I'd say it's worth a read.

nothing should ever be wiped away/deleted from adding new ones.. its possible though that adding an item creates a new tab and so you arent seeing the others?

I have a very solid foundation for building android apps now, ESPECIALLY ones with complicated collections of items.

I'd love to find some contract work to develop android apps -- so if anyone wants to hire me to create a serious android app for their business, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

That's so odd... I can't imagine what would be causing LBC to behave like that.. Im going to build you a debug version to see if we can track down the problem.

Daniel Lemire on Best programming language for high performance

I keep hoping that the field of programming language will evolve. I am a bit tired to program in Java and C… I’d like better languages. I am particularly interested in what I generally call “high-performance programming”. I want to pick languages where I can get the most out of my hardware...

Not all that deep but still worth reading.

Whoever was nice enough to rate all my apps as 5 stars -- Google removed all of the ratings and considered them "fake".
I guess it pays to remember not to rate apps just to be nice, you better be a real user.  :-\

I'm half way through the Personal Finance for Dummies book and I can definitely recommend it as a first book on getting your finances and investments (if any) in order.  It's a very no-nonsense basic straightforward book.  You could probably sum it up in a little pamphlet that just says pay off your debt and save money in an IRA for retirement, but sometimes it's nice to hear something explained slowly and clearly until it sinks in.

The other thing I want to recommend is I have gone back to using Quicken, which I only used briefly many years ago, and wow I forgot how clear things are when they are all available to you.. I can see bank accounts, credit cards, mortgage, etc.  all clearly on one screen, with bank account transactions organized into categories, etc.  Very useful for budgeting.

I said it before I'll say it again, this is the year I get financially organized and literate -- who's joining me?

That is troubling and the first I've heard of anything hanging..

Are there any network drives attached to the machine?  I'm trying to think what could be causing it to hang..

If you let it run for a while I'd be interested in hearing if it ever unhangs.

Worst cast scenario I can send you a debug version to try to track down where it is getting stuck..

Can I get an update about this bug -- is it still happening?

The latest version of CHS seems to have been a great success in terms of speed improvements.  I would like to squash any remaining oddities..
