I don't want to appear as an apologist for MS but they do have an awesome job getting stuff tested just because of the shear diversity of hardware out there and the fact that anyone, his dog or cat can build a system from scratch from an infinite number of components all with third party drivers that MS by and large have little control over. Everyone then expects all versions of Windows to work flawlessly first time.

What's Apple's excuse? I thought system reliability out of the box was the whole point of Apple hardware lockdown (even to the point that you can even get into some of the boxes they produce - they won't even let users change batteries for god's sake!)

Living Room / Re: Laptop or Desktop — which are you?

The size of the computer doesn't matter too much - smaller is better though. The really important things are the human interface devices. i.e. Mouse, keyboard and monitor.

My IDEAL computer would be like this (total fantasy at the moment):

* Large visual display - Preferably of variable sizes for different situations, e.g. airplane vs. desk. Should unfold from a nice compact size up to between 15" and 30". Should also have an included stand/prop.

* Display is touch and laser sensitive. Touch is self-explanitory (ala the MS Surface technology). Laser is below...

* Hybrid wireless laser-pointer hover mouse - Acts like a regular mouse but includes a laser to point at the screen to control the pointer/cursor. Mouse can also be used in mid-air (hover) when you don't have a solid surface available - nice for traveling.

* Massive storage - 1 PB would be good. 4 TB would be ok for right now.

* Speed - Just plain mind-blowingly fast. You can never have enough raw power.

* Unfoldable compact wireless keyboard - Rolls out to full size. Has reinforcements to stabilize it when unfolded so it's hard like a real keyboard.

Sigh... Only a dream for the moment.

You can get roll up full size keyboards (and they are waterproof too) here's just one example: http://www.keyboardc...ails.asp?PRODUCT=284

Now how about a roll up monitor - that would be nice, and if it were touch sensivitive!

A domain name could be useful for helping someone return a lost cat though - just put it on the tag and set up a webpage with a pic of the cat and a method of contacting you!

How about www.technocat.tv (available name) for the cat who's into technology and likes TV !

« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 18, 2007, 04:10 AM »
Hi and welcome ...

Answering your original question - can't you just buy some drum samples and sequence them in Cubase? I don't use Cubase personally but I use Sonar which is it's main rival and that has a fully functional drum machine built in - you just need the sounds.

Your are most welcome to stay and chat here but I would suggest that if you want specific info and suggestions for Cubase there are loads of forums out there specifically aimed at Cubase and music making that would have a wealth of experience to offer. Try googling "Cubase forum help" for loads of forums relating to Cubase or "Cubase Tutorials" for lots of suggestions - I'm sure there will be drum programming tutorials out there.

Actually Googling "Cubase drum" comes up with loads of stuff.

Does this one look helpful at all: http://www.drumslive.com/

Let us know how you get on.

PS: Actually I was going to suggest FXpansion as I have the DXi version of it - hadn't realised that they had branched out into VST territory now. FXpansion also has a really good user community that share sounds and settings. Worth a look.

Could it be that during a save when it saves the basecode of fsekrit if the base code is readonly - it will copy as a read only file and then when you try to append the data it will fail because it can't append to a readonly file?

Does it use any temporary file while writing? In which case it may be trying to write the temporary file to a read only location ... just a thought.

Are you saying all text files or just those with an unregistered extension?

I don't experience this behaviour at all. If I take a text file with txt extension it opens instantly. If I remove the extension or change the extension to total rubbish and then use file open in notepad to open it (or drop it on a notepad window) there is not delay at all.

The only time there is a delay is if I double click a file with an unregistered extension and windows pops up the 'which application should I use' type dialogue that there is a delay - but that is a function of windows not NOD32 and happens wven when NOD32 isn't inatlled. It only happens because Windows takes time to compile a list of application (just like it takes a long time for the Add/Remove applications dialogue to appear).

So ESET agree IMON is superfluous I suppose  :)

I think the phrase they used was "IMON is belt and braces" - so long as AMON is running IMON is pretty much superfluous (as are DMON and EMON presumably).

I had an issue with NOD32 2.7 a while back (can't remember what it was now) and ESET Tech Support told me to disable IMON - they said it didn't affect security ... begs the question why bother with IMON at all?

Note there is no IMON.DLL in version 3

I haven't seen a speed hit except when scanning ZIP archives with heuristic scanning enabled (which was documented and doesn't seem to have been fixed over the last couple of years). No problems so far with version 3.

J-Mac I agree with you about keeping users informed though. There are settings for software updates but they have never offered a single update since I installed NOD32 other than pattern files. In fact I never get any email from them at all either - even though I am subscribed!

Main thing is that most software actively supports Wacom tablets - not sure if there are any significant differences in drivers etc. for other makes that might make interfacing a problem.

I have an old Wacom Graphire 2 tablet which was very good value.

If you want an expensive Intuos tablet try signing up for a $20 course at LVSonline (good value anyway) and then you can buy Wacom products at education prices which are much lower across the range. See http://www.lvsonline.com/ for details.

Some of the discount links are on http://www.lvsonline.com/news.shtml for both hardware and software.

Don't bother the manual doesn't even have the words import or export!

Actually the Print List ... is very useful as an easily accessible backup.

just one hoop which is quick, easy and painless.

OK, it's probably a hoop I have an unreasonable dislike of.  What happens if, for example, you more to a new computer; do you have to contact them for activation?

Not usually - if you reinstall a lot you may need to contact them to ask for an activation but I found when that happened they got back to me within a couple of hours.

It is good to realize that Mike Lin is still working - I used a lot of his programs in the previous century.

It doesn't look like any of his apps have been updated in years -shame though as they are useful.

Does that mean he has had a rethink since then (presumably as a result of cash offers to edit ....)?

Note as standard Roboform2Go is $19.95 if you buy it after buying the pro version of RoboForm. I still haven't bitten the bullet - but I should really!

Like others RoboForm is the major reason I won't consider using Opera - RF is simply brilliant at what it does - I couldn't live without it.
