FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: [bug report] Plist Plugin
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 10, 2008, 09:35 AM »
I could actually work around this but it would be a little inefficient so i'll wait for a plist update.
Thanks for the follow-up!

Find And Run Robot / Re: Output to Farr's memo mode
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 10, 2008, 09:24 AM »
edit: type something like ""cn cd C:\ && dir &&""
When I do exactly this (cn cd C:\ && dir &&) I get a directory listing of the directory that contains FARR.

[edit]
cn dir c:\ &&  Works fine.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / [bug report] Plist Plugin
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 09, 2008, 10:38 PM »
With 2.05.01 plist doesn't function well.
Shows only 1 entry here, vs. 10 previously.
Calling an explicit printer e.g. plist Canon shows only the first Canon entry.

Living Room / Re: Where does the power go when I save it?
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 08, 2008, 09:53 AM »
In fact I've set up the power boards so that it's the minimum of unplugging: for ease!
-Perry Mowbray (June 08, 2008, 07:48 AM)
I'll have to take a leaf out of your book.
There's so much sensitive stuff, in so many rooms, I'd like to find a lazy-man's way to safeguard it.

Clockwork had a lot going for it. :)
4005
this kind of stuff is getting out of hand.  where is the antivirus for adults and computer users who don't need to be treated like children?
-mouser
Have you looked beneath the shift key?  ;)

Heard the rumour about a new AV paradigm?
Adults only!

but the problem in the shops is that if there is someone to help you they are generally young and/or not at all knowledgeable. Their sole purpose is to aid you to getting your purchases to the checkout, not help you to make the right purchase.
-Perry Mowbray (June 08, 2008, 06:05 AM)
And, often, they will hand out totally erroneous "information" based on a mixture of willingness and ignorance.

It's uncomfortable to see how far into the dump-and-replace groove we've settled. Once, when something didn't work, it was second nature to take it into my workshop. That happens far less often now  -- partly, but only partly, due to complexity.

To get back to the main topic, though... I'm pretty sure that the stuff I return really does have problems. I suppose most people feel that way, which is the point of the article, but I usually get a second opinion in order to rule out user stupidity.

How do people here feel about buying open-stock or refurbished items?  Are we reassured by this report?

I have no news from AuctionStealer whatsoever and my support email is still unanswered
Thanks for warning the rest of us.
Hope the delay doesn't prejudice your chance to get what you need (lucky girlfriend).

Where does the power go when I save it?
Well, currently, according to the label on the thing into which I plug various hardware, mine goes and hangs out in a bar!

A lot of the power plugs on computer items that I use are out of sight and thus relatively inaccessible.
I saw somewhere that Belkin (iir) has/will have a remotely controlled power strip.
While doubtless that in itself will be a vampire it'll probably be a better solution than every single item playing Dracula.
I haven't yet found where to buy one.

@Tomos: Unplug! Just had the USB input to one of my printers fried in a thunder storm round here.

cranioscopical[/b], correct me if I'm wrong, but other than more multimedia choices (including the ubiquitous DRM), what more are we doing today? Office suites haven't changed much at all except around the edges. Most people still use spreadsheets for a thousand tasks, I was very happy with game play back then, but today, I'd much rather play on a dedicated game console.
Well, just a couple of quick examples.
You may or may not not like 'em but the constituent parts of the Adobe suite make stuff from ten years ago look fairly shabby.
I'd submit that office suites *have* improved a lot over the past decade. I use WordPerfect for reasons of my own, and there's no comparison between now and 10 years ago.
Preference for dedicated console or not, have you noticed that games are just a bit better on a PC today than in 1998?

Don't forget, too, that compared to ten years ago we're dragging down performance by trying to protect ourselves from irritation and assault every time we talk to the outside world.

other than more multimedia choices
Why other than?  There are more, they're more demanding, and I for one use them more than I did 10 years ago.

just as soon as I do, the "corporation" wants me to trash my DVD collection and reinvest in Blu-Ray at three times the cost.
Red herring alert :)

In principle, however, I do share your frustration.  Like almost every computer user, I want what I want, I want more of it, and I want it 5 minutes ago.

By now, I was kind of hoping the computer would find a way to deposit money into my checking account daily.
Well it works fine for me.  Should I introduce you to one of my friends in Nigeria?

Why, when I was a lad they were incised on stone tablets!
-cranioscopical (June 07, 2008, 02:29 PM)

Shouldn't that be "When I were a lad..."?

Only for those born in 1948 ;)
4011
We had to TURN PAGES. We even had to stack them outside
Pages?  PAGES?  Why, when I was a lad they were incised on stone tablets!
Try stacking those in the yard at 40C below, having carried them uphill with bare feet.
Holy Moses!

Now I'll have to vote thrice more...

I don't understand how a computer ("for example") in 2008, is slower than the one I ran using Windows ME in 1998!
Someone set me straight, and then tell the rest of us how to cure this wicked trend.

Spoiler
Also, how can it be that I'm ten times slower in 2008 than I was in 1998,
but in 1998 I was only 1.5 times slower than in 1988?

We are doing a great deal more with them.  I'll bet that, had you seen in 1998 what we're doing today, you'd have been quite excited.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 04, 2008, 08:46 PM »
SQLNotes (will be renamed, to perhaps SliceAndDice or Dimension)
any comments on those names?
anyone?   :)
FWIW I think SliceAndDice is too unspecific and possibly misleading (too 'kitchen-y'?).
Something along the lines of Data SliceAndDice or Info SliceAndDice gives the uninitiated a clue as to purpose.

Living Room / Re: Why do children love CAPS LOCK?
« Last post by cranioscopical on June 02, 2008, 06:49 PM »
I think it's because they're too young to drive. Once they get a car, they stop doing the all caps thing and just leave their left turn signal permanently on.
A few decades more and they wear a flat cap and gradually sink below the level of the steering wheel!

making (panel) doors is not as easy as the rest of the skills i've learned

When it comes to routers it's all too easy to confuse cordless with wireless :)

Nice job there! Where do you store the pogo stick?
