Non-Windows Software / Re: What Android apps do you use to read digital books?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 10, 2013, 11:18 AM »
I didn't even try Aldiko since Renegade didn't have much good to say about it.

I tried FBReader and Cool Reader. After a minute or two in each I decided that FBReader seemed possibly very good and that I hate Cool Reader pretty much entirely because of this:

2013-08-10 16.12.24.png

Yep! That's Cool Reader's "Night Mode." How the smurf am I supposed to read that?

But then I realized I should have tried CoolReader instead. In fact, I intended to, but inadvertently installed the wrong one. So after a minute using it, I decided that it's not very good either. It's only a PDF reader, even though the description has text in it so that a search for "ePub," "Aldiko," and "Cool Reader" (and more) will find CoolReader. Also, it left a bad first impression immediately when I started it and saw that it was designed to look like an iOS app. Ugh!

So for now I guess it's FBReader for me. Thanks for the suggestions!

Non-Windows Software / ANDROID: What app do you use to read digital books?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 10, 2013, 02:06 AM »
Hi folks,

I have purchased a few eBooks in my time and after a very recent digital book purchase I realized that (to the best of my knowledge) I have never attempted to read an eBook in epub or mobi format on my Android device, with the possible exception of the books I've gotten on the Google Play store (most of which were free/public domain). I'm not sure what format those are.

So for all you Android users out there, what's a good Android app to use to read eBooks with?

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: Internet Speed Test
« Last post by Deozaan on August 10, 2013, 01:41 AM »
I recently learned about this site: http://testmy.net/

I'm not to sure about their results. The test gave me 19.9 Mbps down and 3.8 Mbps up...which sounds ok...except for one minor detail. I'm on a 40 Mbps symmetrical fiber connection.

SpeedTest.net gives me 30.04Mbps down and 33.08Mbps up which is a bit more believable, as it's 6pm on a Friday and the (nonbusiness/best effort) bandwidth isn't guaranteed.

Yeah, I often get similar results. I just changed ISPs. My old ISP package was 5Mb down and 0.5Mb up, with SpeedTest.net often telling me I was actually getting slightly higher speeds (e.g., 5.2Mb down/0.52 up) than that, which made me pretty happy to be getting more than I was paying for. When I got my new ISP, they told me to test out my new, faster speeds using testmy.net. The new speeds I'm paying for are 20Mb down and 1Mb up. But testmy.net frequently tells me I'm getting between 8-13Mb down and about 0.65Mb up. Or in other words, about 50-65% of what I'm paying for.. Yet SpeedTest.net says 19Mb down and 0.8Mb up.

Funny that the new ISP would tell me to use a service that consistently gives lower values when bragging about how much faster their speeds are compared to (what was) my current ISP. . .

Somehow I felt happier about my old ISP's philosophy of "under-promise and over-deliver" compared to my new ISP's philosophy of "over-promise and under-deliver."  :'(

5mW 532nm Green Light Laser Pointer - Deep Blue + Silver (2 x AAA)

My green laser came a couple of weeks ago and I love it! It is awesome! I was so giddy when it arrived (I didn't check my mail until past midnight that day) that I played with it for a while and then slept with it next to my pillow. :-* Wow, I'm such a geek! :D

Thanks for that... I'm checking it out... but I think I'm all in. :)

Oh yeah, I'm ALL IN with the non-refundable $1000.  Now for the hard part, waiting for it to come off the assembly-line.....   :D

The only two things I still have to research are the maintenance/parts and acceleration.  [...] And they mention top speed... but not acceleration...

(Emphasis added below)

Fast Facts
Top speed is in excess of 100 MPH, and the 0-60 speed is under 9.6 seconds. So it’s not exotic sports car fast, but it’s not slow, either. And while a gas-guzzling muscle car might pass you, no one will pass gas stations like you.

Google Reader went away and I moved all my feeds to ... something else. I'm not even sure what. But it was a desktop application. And just like that I forgot to keep checking the feeds. And I don't miss it. It's nice not having so much stuff to catch up on every day. I guess I needed to simplify. :)

And actually, I don't mind any genre if its well done.  It's just that most of the crap they put out now *isn't*.

Pfft! Liar! No guy likes any chick-flick no matter how well it's done! We only tolerate them because of our ladies! :P

Now, add in some aliens or cyborgs or space ships or lasers or zombies or something that's actually cool/interesting, and yeah... they can be done well enough to enjoy. :P

I'm not afraid to admit that one of my favorite movies is "Somewhere in Time". :)

That's because Superman is in it!

I recently watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was decent but a lot of things just didn't make sense to me. I mean, I understood the plot just fine, but I didn't understand why people did certain things. It broke my suspension of disbelief because the people sometimes acted too irrationally for me for it to be believable. Also, a lot of the plot elements just don't make sense when taking the other movies into account.

Example
When Wolverine tracks down Gambit to find Sabretooth and Gambit knocks him through the wall whereupon he sees Sabretooth... Why would Gambit interrupt the fight when Wolverine was attacking someone who he (Gambit) hated?

I also saw Jack Reacher the other day. Having never heard of it before, I thought it was decent. Not fantastic, but decent. I'd probably think it was stupid if I started to think about it, but somehow I managed to make it through the movie without thinking a whole lot about it, which doesn't happen often for me, so I'm not going to think about it.

$25 for a bag of laundry? Man... I'm so cheap I won't even use the coin-op machines at my apartment and just beg family or friends to let me come do laundry at their place. There's no way I'd waste that much money on a load of laundry.

You ever hear the one about the guy that called in a robbery and was told it would take 2 hours, so he called in a shooting and they were there in seconds??

You mean this one?

I use DreamHost. Mostly because I used to use them as my webhost. But they do include privacy in the price of domain registration, which is why I never changed registrars thus far.
