Living Room / Re: USB 3.0 problems with Windows; general discussion
« Last post by superboyac on April 23, 2015, 03:08 PM »
In my experience, problems with USB 3.0 have come from the controller on the computer, or more specifically the drivers for the host controller.  It's worth seeing if newer drivers are available for the chipset on your host controller.

eSATA is very stable, but it will not work with drives >2TB on older computers that do not have BIOS support for large drives, whereas USB 3.0 (with a reasonably recent driver) will.

I have successfully used a U3eSATA USB to eSATA converter to attach a 3GB drive in an eSATA enclosure through a USB 3.0 port to an older computer that would not recognize it when connected directly to the computer's eSATA port.
Yea, good points.  i remember that 2TB limit.  That caused problems that resulted in corrupted drives, too.  At the time, the thing that fixed it was the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software.  NOw, most motherboards can handle it fine.

That adapter is nice.  You know what I can't find?  The opposite of that thing...that is, an adapter that takes an USB3 and turns it into an eSATA plug.  That would be VERY handy.

IainB, your post agrees with what fodder says, regarding your overall positive experiences with USB3.
I guess for the most part, I have had good experiences.  My main problems seem to be using the drives in multiple computers.  There seems to be a problem sooner or later that corrupts the drive and requires a formatting.

I do very much agree that safely removing the drives is critical.  I normally use Zentimo for that, as it is very convenient for that sort of thing.  There are times where, like you, the drive wasn't able to be safely ejected.  This has often resulted in a corrupted drive if I force it.  So now I will power the computer down if that occurs.  Everything is the problem a lot of the time.

My most recent issue was that the Windows Server 2012 couldn't load the drive, and when I pulled it out, it got corrupted.  It was hanging on the virtual disk manager service process.  I'm trying to resolve this problem as I'd really like to be able to use the drive on that computer.

The controllers and drivers don't seem to matter that much IMO.  What I mean is that regarding the problems I've had, there was either no driver to update, and even if there was, the update didn't behave any differently than the old version.

I'm still looking for the post of the guy that ran some tests and also concluded it was a Windows problem, not a USB3 or device problem.

Living Room / USB 3.0 problems with Windows; general discussion
« Last post by superboyac on April 22, 2015, 02:55 PM »
I got into it a little with fodder in another thread.  So I wanted to continue this discussion specifically here.

I want to talk about the problems with USB 3.0 in any Windows OS (desktop or server).  If you haven't experienced problems with USB 3.0, you are not going to help the discussion.  In other words, I'd like to figure out a solution if it exists, or at least nail what the problem is.

So, my experiences...
I've had several USB 3.0 experiences.  Some on desktops I've built myself.  I've used the more recent motherboard built-in features, I've used addon PCI cards, I've used expensive laptops that come with nice USB 3.0 features on them, including my Surface Pro.  The Windows OS's I've tried: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2.

My goal (I guess) is to have an external enclosure where I can swap drives in and out, use them on several different computers, and not have problems.  I've never really had a nice experience in these terms.  I've had success in isolated cases: for example, and enclosure+drive works well on my laptop, no problem.  But I don't think I've had success with using an enclosure+drive on multiple pc's without issues along the way.

Scenario 1:
I have an enclsoure+drive that has esata and USB3.  I first tried USB3 on a Windows 7 desktop.  It didn't work very well in that sometimes the device was detected, and other times it was not.  And sometimes, when it did connect, a popup would immediately ask to format the disk.  Which I didn't want to because it had data on it and was working before that incident.  Usually when this happens, the drive is already corrupted.  This has happened several times.  Usually occurs when trying the drive on different USB ports, or on different computers.  And the reason to try it on different ports and computers is because the drive was not being detected on the first try.

Scenario 2:
After experiencing Scenario 1, I lost trust in the USB3 connection.  So I decided to use the available esata port.  I really have not had problems with esata, I like it a lot.  However, some computers don't have esata, so when I take the same enclosure to a computer that lacks esata, I use the USB connector.  Problems occur, similar to above.  Where the drive gets corrupted and eventually needs to be reformatted.  When this happens, I end up using the esata port on the computer that works, and I stop trying to use it on other pcs.  I don't like that, but at least it works.

Scenario 3:
In this case, I don't have esata, only USB3.  I plug it in a USB3 port, it's detected, and I start transferring files.  If I do a significant amount of transfers, let's say 100GB...I've very often encounter the drive disconnecting in the middle of the transfers.  This usually turns out to be a power issue, but it's not always clear.  I've had it happen with extra power, too.  Some enclosures can add extra power, others cannot.

Scenario 4:
This is the new one for me.  I got an enclosure that can RAID-0 two 2.5 drives, with USB3.  I love the idea for speed and portability.  So far, it has had some minor issues, not enough to really be a problem, but enough to make me nervous.  it worked with Windows 7, but initially had a hard time being detected consistently.  One of my drives was fresh, the other had stuff on it.  after formatting and fiddling around a bit, it worked.  It worked on Windows 8.1.  It didn't work on Server 2012.  It causes it to hang.  But the bigger issue is that after plugging it into Server 2012 machine, it didn't get detected, and the drives got corrupted and had to be reformatted on the other computers.

So what's going on?  How do you get USB3 to work well and all the time?

I'm going to list many of the common solutions for USB3 problems.  In my experiences, they don't do anything most of the time.  But these are the responses that are all over the internet.
--Disable the power/suspend settings for the USB hubs.  Nice idea, rarely fixes anything.
--Similarly, adjust the power settings in Windows.  This has worked occasionally, but doesn't appear to be the problem.
--Bad controller on the enclosure.  I think this is nonsense.  I've had drives being corrupted the same exact way on several completely different enclosures.
--Replace drivers or firmware.  Also does not seem to do anything.  And figuring out the driver or firmware that needs to be replaced is also somewhat impossible.

Are there any security/bandwidth/blocking ramifications?
last time this happened, ad muncher said they wouldn't be able to block the ads, nor would they ever try to.  Later on, ad muncher went free and stopped being actively developed or something.
Adblock plus seems to be able to block them with a plugin, at least.

check that...I'm rereading your response.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are talking about 2.5 disks, not thumbdrives right?  If you have a thumbdrive that is consistently getting over 50MB/s, i need the model!
My first post has benchmarks of a SanDisk (50MB/s) and a Corsair (200MB/s) thumbdrive, my 2nd post is a 2.5" WD harddisk :)

What do you get for WRITE speed on your corsair?  btw, it is rated quite highly online.  Can you crack 100MBps?

is it me, or is it impossible to find the download link for notefrog on their site?

edit...was just reading IainB's post above, yes, I'm having the same issues.  I'm guessing the developer is doing some business restructuring.  There is a lot of that happening right now.

yea, that's a good way to go about it.  my favorite version was the one before they completely overhauled the interface.  this one:

oh...i see what has happened.  BTsync has gone "pro", so you can now pay an annual fee for the services.
This explains why they were tweaking the interface last year so aggressively.  They've been trying to make it more user friendly.  I don't like the changes, as my rant above shows.

The new alternative I have settled on...open source and free.  Syncthing:
https://syncthing.net/

It's not as easy to setup as btsync, but it's not bad.  it has an annoying cmd window that is open while it is running, and it can't autostart.  Fortunately, somebody has made something called Synctrayzor, which takes care of those issues, so that is the mod version I am using, and it's great!
https://github.com/canton7/SyncTrayzor

so i think i've said goodbye to btsync.  and it was great while it lasted.

fodder: that's usually the first response, that it's a problem with controllers and firmware.  But I wish I could find it...this one guy tested this idea using different controllers, different computers, different firmware, and always had the same result.  it's a USB problem, and for some reason, it is not talked about.

I'm not saying usb is bad.  it's perfectly fine and awsome for convenience, and a common platform, etc.  but for reliable, large capacity, heavy usage transfers, it is just not very good.

your corsair thumbdrive, i assure you, is getting nowhere near 200 MB/s.  reading is fine, nobody really has issues with reading speeds.  i'm willing to bet you're not even really getting over 50 MB/s sustained.

external power is a different story.  external power +usb3 is pretty good.  here's my opinion:

esata: great
usb3 (no ex. power): mediocre.  a little better than usb2, and more unreliable.
usb3 + ex. power: good.  great for speed, somewhat unreliable but probably not that big a deal.
usb3 (no ex. power): bad!  not worth it, i'd rather go with usb2.
usb2 (no ex. power): good. slow speeds, pretty reliable for non-mechanical drives. not reliable for mechanical drives or large capacity drives.
usb2 + ex. power: very good.  reliable.  not very fast.  should work fine with any kind of drive.

Living Room / Re: Kingston USB 3.0 for ISO usage
« Last post by superboyac on April 18, 2015, 04:45 PM »
every advertised usb speed i've seen in my life has been grossly exaggerated.
read speeds are not an issue to me, I've never really had any issues with read speeds with usb drives in my life. but maybe i'm not remembering anything correctly.
write speeds are where it's at for me.  for usb 2 drives, the write speeds are never more than, say, 20 MB/s.  Maybe sometimes it will burst high, but usually i think they are in the 10-20 range.
for usb 3, i have hit the 80-100 MB/s range, but only with an SSD drive inside an enclosure.  And even that wasn't terribly consistent.  Depending on the computer, or the situation, I've even seen that commonly go to the 30-50 range.
for thumbdrives, I've never had great speeds, regardless of the advertised speed or whatever.  Thumbdrives are just going to be slow.  And the usb 3 offerings for thumbdrives suck.
I don't even know if it's the thumbdrive problem.  There is something wrong with USB 3 in general, it's not very reliable.  I've tried transferring a large about of data to an external drive connected to USB 3...wether it was an SSD, or flash, or mechanical drive...and things usually go wrong.  Often times, the drive will disconnect in the middle of the transfer.  SOme of my research has shown me this is common, and not resolved, and people aren't very sure what the issue is.  There is something wrong with USB 3.    Drives have become corrupted on more than one occasion.
There is one great thing that has helped me...I bought an extra external power USB cable to use with my external drives, and that seems to be a great help (I got it from addonics).  So I plug the external drive in the usb 3 slot, and i plug an additional power cable to the enclosure.  This makes the transfers much smoother.  SO USB 3 may have a power supply problem.  Still, I feel something is wrong with it fundamentally.

i recently was able to get about 100 MB/s, consistent and reliable, with the mentioned power cable with a inatek usb3 enclosure on my tablet and the extra power cable (mechanical 2.5 drive inside).  Without it, the tablet couldn't even read the drive.  it would literally connect and disconnect constantly.  and in the past, without the extra power, the drives have become corrupted and needed to be reformatted.  be careful with USB.

esata has been good to me.  No problems usually.  But my esata drives usually have external power connected anyway.  It might just be a power issue.  Which may be why all the thumbdrives suck, is because they don't have external power.

I personally have always had problems with usb as far as speed and reliability.  For convenience, it's great, but for transfers, not so much.

and what frustrates me the most is that there just doesn't seem to be much discussion about these real issues with USB.  Again, one time I found this one guy who had done quite a bit of investigation and had proven that this is not a driver problem, or an enclosure problem, or a manufacturer problem...but really a USB problem.

If you were to ask me, I would like a little more attention given to other platforms like esata or thunderbolt.  but there is politics here.  I think the important people know about this power problem, but there isn't enough demand to fix anything at this point.

Case in point, a couple of years ago, I got a vaio laptop that had a special thunderbolt implementation.  Did it have an actual thunderbolt plug?  Nope.  guess what it was?  it was a funky USB3+power cable.  And it kind of worked pretty well compared to other USB 3 implementations I've seen.  So that means sony is aware that USB3 needs additional power to do anything that the advertised specs say.  yet hardly any USB3 implementation have the extra power (talking about thumbdrives and stuff, for obvious reasons).  see below for the plug I'm talking about:
0e45097e45.gif

so my point is, no matter what anyone says, I would never expect much more than 30MB/s write speeds with any kind of USB device that doesn't have extra power.

Also, the only time I've seen awesome write speeds (as in, over 80 MB/s consistently) is with good RAID setups.  I've gotten 50-80 with software raid, which is ok.  I've gotten almost 200 MB/s with SSD raid (two drives).  I've seen videos of people getting crazy high, like 400 MB/s, with some good Raid setups.

I just ultimately feel the consumer market for thumbdrives is not getting the attention needed to get the higher speeds.  I think the technology is there and available.

interesting.  and we were just talking about how to bridge the gap between physical books and ebooks.  this is one of those tools.
Thanks. That is the plan, to bring back navigation and rereading tools everyone takes for granted with physical books (highlights, dots/marks in the margin, earmarks for easy flipping between pages). If you can think of some other feature of that sort that is used for physical books then do tell and I'll see if I can emulate that in this app too. I plan to add an extra hotkey to set one single page as a special location and then a hotkey to jump between the present page and the special location and back. Kind of like holding a finger between some pages near the end of a book for easy flip to read an endnote and then flip back.
I've had discussions about this recently.  here are some of the ideas:
the earmark is a key feature.  Especially for long books or reference books.  Keep a finger her, flip to there, etc.  How to do this digitally?  not sure but I'll offer a suggestion.  let's say I'm reading, i hit a point where i want to now flip to somewhere else for a bit and come back.  so i press some button, and that point is now saved.  But not just bookmarked (I've tried this with acrobat, it sucks).  It needs to retain the whole view...exactly where i am scroll-wise, and the zoom position, etc.  exactly the way it looked when i left.  Once i save that spot, a bright circle with a number could appear on the border or something.  Now, I flip to somewhere else.  Maybe I want to save that spot too.  So i hit the button again, and another circular symbol appears next to the other one, maybe a different color and the next number.  SO now i have to colorful circles indicating my saved spot.  i click on either of these circles and that takes me back to their positions.  but it needs to be quick, easy, etc.  don't make me write a title for each thing, etc.  make it easy to make it or remove it.

The other thing is the visual awareness of where i am in the book position.  When you read a book, there's this visual satisfaction as you go through it where the thickness of pages starts accumulating on the left.  I don't know how to do that digitally, but i've heard that mentioned from people who prefer the real books.  I know we have page numbers like 121/315.  But it's not the same, it's not visual.  of course, there are those scrollbars that fill up as you read along, that's visual.  But somehow, it's not very satisfying.

and regarding the earmarks...
as you flip around, it would also be nice if the program automaically remembered the places you are jumping from.  Like an automatic bookmarking history.  so if i flip around a few times, it has a convenient list somewhere where it shows where i left off.  But the key thing here is that it saves the entire view, not just a simple bookmark.  it really needs to look like exactly how it was when i left.

Can Foobar be installed on portable mode?
If so, preferences shouldn't be lost when updating the program.
This is true.  I've tried both modes.  This is also a known issue with foobar.
The problem is, you want to retain the keyboard shortcuts regardless of the rest of the settings.  So you can't separate them out.  For example, let's say I have foobar configured just the way I like, but without the keyboard shortcuts.  if I restore a previous configuration, it's going to replace everything, not just the keyboard shortcuts.

I finally tried flexraid.  I like it!
The setup was different from storage spaces, which I thought was relatively easy.  Flexraid (I'm doing the "tRAID" module) was also pretty easy to setup, but maybe a little more difficult than storage spaces.  But, it has really great wizards/tutorials so it's not a problem.
The organization is similar to SS and any other RAID software, where you have to think about how you are going to organize your drives, folders, volumes, etc.  However, the feature that made me go to Flexraid was speed.  I was a tad underwhelmed by SS speeds, so that's why I'm here.  Flexraid's traid (which is their real-time raid, vs their raid-f, which is some kind of scheduled raid) is faster than SS mirrored mode, which was supposed to be decent.  In copying files over now, I'm ranging between 60-100 MB/s which I am pleased with.  With SS mirror, I was getting 60 max, and less overall.
I also like that I am losing less space to redundancy and mirroring.
Another great feature of tRaid is that the files are intact if you grab a single drive and stick it in another computer.  I don't really know how that works as far as spreading the files around, but it's nice and comforting to know that.

Before I went here, I also tried FreeNAS.  However, I was immediately intimidated by the non-windows interface.  So i quit fast before I spend too much time learning linux.

So far so good, liking flexraid's traid.

First thing I did when i got the car was get an OBD2 scanner.. Then torque for android to let me analyze data further.
Read my car manual cover to cover several times, got the service manual for it and browsed through that.
And then I watched dozens of videos over and over about doing maintenance.
Then read 1000s of forum posts on my specific car, and cars in general.
Then bought several large books on how cars work and how to maintain your car and read them cover to cover.
Etc, etc.

« Last post by superboyac on March 12, 2015, 06:02 PM »
Cars need a lot less maintenance nowadays than they used to, and a lot of the maintenance they do need is not something that you can do yourself.  It is often said that cars today are basically computers with wheels.  All new cars sold in the US since 1996 are required to have an accessible OBD-II port (On-Board Diagnostics). You can buy an inexpensive device to check the diagnostic codes if you get an engine check light, but the equipment you would need to do any serious troubleshooting or tuning can cost more than the car itself.

The most important thing is to follow the manufacturer’s schedule for changing oil, filters and other fluids, but given your projected usage, you (or your car) might die of old age before you need to replace a spark plug.  You won’t save much money doing the ordinary things yourself, but it can be interesting, at least for a while.

I’d suggest looking for an introductory course in auto repair at a local technical school.  It will be well worth your while if you actually do decide you want to do your own maintenance.

Yes, I was just going to say this.  Get one of those apps or software that you can plug in and get all that mechanic info.  I've been meaning to get one myself.

I think this explains the issue pretty well - except that his examples are actually much closer to the original, compositionally speaking.
yup, exactly.  I don't know what kind of legal mess we're headed into.  I'd say that the sensible thing to do is to avoid trying to set these boundaries on creativity.  Easier said than done.  The problem is...you DO have people who copy music and hide it.  But you also have people who just happen to have the same structure coincidentally.  And I don't think it's possible to draw the line somewhere without nazi-fying the creative process.  but what can you do really.
