General Software Discussion / Re: grid window scenario
« Last post by dr_andus on December 05, 2014, 04:44 AM »
Taskspace, by example, don't use a single windows expandable or browsable in my opinion. You have to divide the window in the monitor.

I don't understand what you mean. You can have multiple tabs in a single expanded window, you don't need to divide the window (unless you want to).

I have seen similar software to taskspace (don't go under Spanish w7-64) .
I would like a group apps launcher able to remember scenarios and putting in a grid, not in windows tabs.

It sounds like you're talking about TaskLayout, not TaskSpace. Here are some TaskLayout Alternatives
403
I will include an option(will name it like "sequential app startup") in one of the next releases of TL.

Great! Looking forward to trying it.
404
@cshnick

Does TaskLayout work with multiple (in my case 3) monitors?

Does it open the apps all at the same time or in some sort of a delayed sequence?

I have a lot of resource-hungry apps that manually take me 5 to 10 min to open at the start of the day, and if I would try to open them all at the same time or very quickly one after the other, it would freeze and probably crash my PC. Would TL work in this scenario?

Otherwise this app would be very useful to me, but only if I could somehow ensure that a new app doesn't launch until the previous one has properly launched.

A couple of months ago, after an update, TaskSpace stopped worked properly with ConnectedText's floating windows, and so I stopped using it. But just a few days ago I got frustrated again with not being able to organise my floating windows across 3 monitors and contacted the TaskSpace developer about it. I should have done that in the first place, as he sorted my issue within a matter of hours and I'm a happy bunny again. TS seems to have come a long way since the OP, so here is a mini review/overview of things that have changed:

Dragging windows into it doesn't capture them...

There are now a few very handy shortcuts, including "move current window to last active TaskSpace" (CTRL+SHIFT+M), so there is no need to drag and drop even (especially useful if the TaskSpace window is on another monitor).

EDIT: bah, it doesn't group then in the sense that they mini/maximize together.

TS can do that now. Another related option that has been added is "Always on top" or "Normal".

Looks like it only works on 32 bit win 7 :(

There is now a Win7 64 -bit version as well.

Maybe that's the reason it's free  :-\

It has moved to a freemium model.

when moved between different monitors (with different resolutions and sizes), the docked windows can get a bit messed up, so need manual rearranging.

That's been resolved.

One needs to be pretty careful during installation though not to install all the adware stuff...

Looks like that's no longer there, now that it has gone freemium.

There are a few minor issues that the developer is still looking into for me, but overall this is coming together nicely. But I've only been using it with CT, so YMMV. I recommend getting in touch with the developer if you run into any problems, as he's very responsive.

Send me a PM if you're willing. :)

Living Room / Re: New square monitor (27" 1920x1920)
« Last post by dr_andus on November 24, 2014, 05:24 PM »
a square #3 there would really be nice.

I have a similar setup to yours but I'd probably want it for #1, to expand the portrait mode space, so e.g. two browser windows or two Word/PDF etc. documents could be viewed side-by-side.

I don't like the additional vertical space because it forces me to scan upwards also.

Yes, that's the downside, but there is an upside too. More visibility and less scrolling of web pages, documents, lists etc.

So now that the layout for most applications is designed for a wide screen interface they're going to recoil back into a completely square screen???

Several of my favourite software are modular, where you can either rearrange panes manually (e.g. PDF-Xchange Editor or ConnectedText) or portrait/landscape mode can be toggled (e.g. Dopus). Maybe the square layout would encourage developers more to make their software to suit both portrait, landscape, and square views.

It seems I took the right turn.

Does that mean you are not going to release Vis-à-Wiki commercially then?

Man, I've been able to use Outline 4D in "production" now for a bit...I am loving it, holy cow!  I'm using it as my basic project manager, and it's working out perfectly.

Are you referring to the outline view or the timeline view (or both)?

Developer's Corner / Re: New EU VAT rules change the game for digital businesses
« Last post by dr_andus on November 20, 2014, 04:51 PM »
not sure what exactly wraith meant, but the big question is how the EU would stop (or punish) a supplier from outside the EU selling without VAT (?)

I meant, if I as a US citizen sold a digital item, and someone in the EU purchased it and downloaded it- then how would they enforce the strictures of these rules against me as a US citizen?

that's what I thought -- but dont have the answers either. But as dr_andus says, they're largely making it work already (via the payment processors).

I wonder if it's even possible these days to make a cross-border electronic payment without 3rd party payment processors (maybe by using some cryptocurrency)?

But don't worry, we can just stop you from boarding your return flight on your next trip to Paris, until you pay up.  ;) Joking aside, I recall Europeans having been arrested or deported from the US under anti-terror legislation because they had an unpaid parking ticket from donkey's years ago...

re not part of an aggregation type service for payment have decidedly *not* been doing it.

I didn't say they were. I said *most that I've bought from in recent years.* In the early years of the Internet I could happily pay in USD and get the same deal with no taxes as the US customer. But in recent times many payment services would identify me as an EU shopper and would automatically apply the VAT—I can only presume it was due to pressure to comply with the local EU country legislation.

as for
how would they even go after me?

there would be an electronic payment trail linking the seller and the buyer, so it's just a question of access to the payment data + plus the right software and processing power to figure that out that an export/import transaction had taken place across the EU's borders.

^ I don't even see *how* it will work.  If I sell a digital download to someone in the EU... how would they even go after me?

From my perspective, as a consumer based in the EU, things have already worked like this for some time. Most payment-processing services have already been charging me for my local VAT (when I purchased a piece of software outside the EU).

So this is probably more of an issue for the less-informed or less compliant payment services that haven't been doing that yet, rather than for individual vendors. For non-EU vendors this just means that you better check with your payment processing service to make sure they do this.

Here's what the Avast folks had to say for themselves in a comment at gHacks Tech News

lukor (Avast team):
Hi guys,
thanks to all for the information posted. We have been able to identify the problem now. Browser Cleanup is responsible for this issue. A bug in the component calculating hashes of the extension packages cause (only in some rare cases) deletion of the wrong file - the original instead the packed one.

Sorry for that and thanks again for your help obtaining the repro steps for us.

The Browser Cleanup team is now working on a fix, which will be delivered via a VPS update shortly (tomorrow).

Sadly that's a bit too late for me.

Non-Windows Software / Re: NEMO UX - the shape of the desktop to come?

Not a particularly ergonomic setup. Your neck and fingers would be aching by the end of the day.

I still like the scene in Minority Report where Tom Cruise gestures with his hands while talking and his computer tableau turns to a steaming pile.  :)

Yes, it would be better to hang it on the wall, then you could be standing up and your arms would at least get some exercise. In fact lifting your arms up a lot is supposed to be good for you as it provides your brain with blood supply (apparently that's why conductors live such long and healthy lives, I heard once...).

  • Does the problem persist after rebooting?
  • Do they show up in an alternative uninstaller? (e.g. Revo, or MyUninstaller from nirsoft)

I can't reboot just now but MyUninstaller is not showing the missing apps (Scrivener, Dragon, PDF-Xchange Viewer) either, even though they are installed and functioning. Maybe it's not a massive number of apps missing, but it's hard to tell how many. I will probably discover as I go along.

What may be common to those 3 apps is that they have all been upgraded at one point or a related product was added, e.g. Dragon from 12 to 12.5 or Xchange Viewer to Editor. Just speculating...

Wrote this below, but you seem to have solved the problem (?)

Thanks. I did solve the DNS problem, which was the most pressing one at the moment.

But I still don't know why some of my programs are missing from the "Programs and Features" in the control panel, and what the consequences of that (if any) are. Should I be worried about that? Scrivener and Dragon seem to run as they should, so does it matter that they are no longer listed in P&F?

However, today I wanted to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.5, but the installer for v. 12 launched instead and gave me an error message, not finding bits of v. 12 to install (even though I already upgraded to v. 12.5 a while ago). Then I noticed that all the Dragon shortcuts have been renamed to v. 12, and v. 12.5 has effectively disappeared from my system, while v. 12 refuses to run or install.

OK, correction: it looks like DNS12.5 is still installed on my system, however all the shortcuts to it have been removed and replaced with shortcuts to the no longer existing DNS12 on my system, hence triggering the installation process.

I'm suspecting that Avast's removal tool may have had something to do with this?

Anyway, this particular problem with DNS has now been solved.

I stopped using/endorsing Avast a few years back when it decided to just up and (FP) delete all of an accounting firms tax software one fine morning in April..

I don't know if it was last week's MS update, or uninstalling Avast, or installing AVG, but things got royally messed up in my system.

Why I'm suspecting the MS update is because when I first went to "Programs and Features" in the control panel, I couldn't find Avast to uninstall from there or from anywhere else, and the list of programs there looked suspiciously short. But I didn't take much notice of that because I was focused on removing Avast. Eventually the only way to do it was to download their Avast Uninstall Utility and use it in Safe Mode. Then I installed AVG Free. I restarted the system a few times during the process.

The problems began when I tried to use MS Word and it started an installer for it, rather than the app. Nonetheless it ran fine eventually.

Then I went back to "Programs and Features" in the control panel and now I can see that a vast number of programs (which otherwise still seem to be installed on my system) do not show up there (e.g. Scrivener, or, indeed, Dragon).

Potentially there could be other programs whose updates may have been uninstalled. It's almost like the Avast uninstall (or the MS update) have reset my system to an earlier state.

Anyway, it looks like I have to reinstall Dragon 12 from scratch, and then update to 12.5 again, if Nuance lets me... What a drag... Does anyone understand what may have just happened here?

It looks like Avast only removed the extensions but not the actual settings of each extension (maybe FF was the clever one to keep that data somewhere safe?), so thank goodness I didn't have to reconfigure the extensions individually after I reinstalled them (the ones that I remembered that is...).

I just came across this fascinating new software, Vis-à-Wiki (alongside Marko Editor), which looks like a combination of a wiki and a concept mapper, and it uses markdown. I was interested in trying it out, but at the download link I found this message:

It was planned to release Marko Editor for free and to earn some money with Vis-à-Wiki and codeduce.

But, I underestimated the various liabilities I would face releasing even such a small software commercially. Some people release software despite these risks, some get sued, some get away. This is not for me, so currently no download :-(

If you have any insight, how I could release these applications without facing various risks or if you just want to hire me instead, please get in contact.

Would anyone have any words of advice for him?

It's worth watching the YouTube video to fully appreciate Vis-à-Wiki:

There also the FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) add-on. It's what I use.

Thanks. Also saw it afterwards mentioned in the above article's comments, will give it a try.

As for Avast!, this was a firing offence in my book... Uninstalled it, and installing AVG Free as we speak.

After having read this,

Latest Avast reportedly deleting Firefox add-ons - gHacks Tech News

I was determined to make a note of what FF extensions I use, so I booted my PC (Win7, 64) and sure enough, Avast had deleted pretty much all of them. Bummer... I can't even remember the names of most of them.

Is there a tool out there to back up FF add-ons, to make restoring less painful? Unfortunately I haven't created a FF account, so everything was local to this PC... Would that have helped?

---

P.S. Oh, I see, one answer was in the article: MozBackup Updated, Backup Firefox - gHacks Tech News. Unfortunately Avast was quicker than me...

It's not quite clear to me what your needs are. Is it for just a handful of contacts to remind yourself (like sticky notes on the desktop), or something that could grow into a database of hundreds of contacts?
