Found Deals and Discounts / Re: PuranDefrag V7 now free for home use

@MerleOne: Looks like I somehow overlooked your Puran thread-- my bad.:-[ I also like Puran and have mentioned it in a few other threads.

I have noticed you keep up with defraggers and have posted for some time on Donn Edwards' defrag site. 8) Since you keep up with this type of software, I would surely like to know if you have an opinion on the freeware Quicksys Disk Defrag? They have a portable version and it looks very nice, but I haven't benchmarked or done any direct comparisons to Puran Defrag.

Yes, AVStoDVD has evolved to the point where the average user probably won't have much trouble. Maybe it's not as easy as DVD Flick or FAVC, but overall it's a pretty smooth experience.

Same situation with the HC encoder btw--the defaults are now satisfactory right out of the box. Maybe bump up to the best profile and put in a small bias value, but that's about it. Smooth sailing.

Just a simple program called SpyBot.

I haven't used Spybot S&D in several years, but I'm sure it still has its fans. But I've never heard of Spybot finding malware which MBAM or SAS missed.

Still, Spybot version 2 will supposedly have realtime protection so who knows--maybe it will have a resurgence in popularity.

In addition to Lightning UK's technical genius, he apparently has a sense of humor which is reflected by the funny/weird sayings displayed in ImgBurn.

ATM I'm seeing the words "You fool, you gave cheese to a lactose intolerant volcano god!"  ;D Gotta love it!  ;D

Darn, I just found out Movienizer is no longer free so I guess I'll be reviewing this thread and others to find a suitable replacement.

General Software Discussion / Re: Unlocker 1.8.7 released - 01/05/2008
« Last post by sajman99 on March 09, 2010, 05:03 PM »
Unlocker 1.8.9 has been released with Win7 support and almost 64 bit support.

Unlocker 1.8.9 - 8/3/2010

The rumors of me not working on Unlocker have been greatly exaggerated. I have been very busy with pushing the envelope at work, MBA studies during evenings and week-ends, and life during the time left.

Still, I finally had a little time to address all the reported issues on Unlocker, and Unlocker now supports Windows 7. From a x64 stand point, it took me a couple of hours to get it fully working on my machine. I still have to sign the driver which might require a lot of paperwork, but hopefully it will not take long. For the impatient kind, I can provide alpha versions :)

Interestingly, now that I have a x64 machine, I had no alternative than to get Unlocker working. Despite the increased number of ersatz, none of them really did the job and I really had a motivation to get Unlocker working.

Finally, I addressed the topic of false positives with Unlocker on my my blog. There is no malware in Unlocker and there will never be. And for the record I am not the only one having similar issues...Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those.

General Software Discussion / Re: Which Linux For Non-Techie Windows Users?

I've been a fan of PCLinuxOS for the last few years. I even installed it on an old computer with 256 MB RAM and to my amazement it actually works.

NinJA999, I gotta check out Mint--I keep hearing good things about that one.

There are a number of free search tools like those mentioned in this DC thread which can search the entire disk in mere seconds, if not milliseconds.

For example, with the search tool Everything you need only type .jpeg to find all instances of the .jpeg file extension on your system. Then you will have direct access to those files so you can delete whatever you choose. It's really so simple and fast it's truly amazing.

Also, many of these tools have optional context menu integration so that you can choose to search a specific folder.

FWIW I have recently replaced MyDefrag with the free version of Puran Defrag. In the past I used JkDefrag and never figured to bump its successor MyDefrag, but Puran's boot time defrag has made it #1 on my machine.

Have you tried StandaloneStack 2 ?

I don't honestly know squat about it (XP user), but it looks like similar software.

Another uninstaller similar to MyUninstaller is Free Uninstaller.

I usually go to MyUninstaller as a first option, but occasionally I'll check Free Uninstaller for an alternative look.

...KM is also one of the fastest browsers that I have tested, it loads almost instantly and doesn't take up too many resources unless you leave  a lot of tabs open with Flash content.

And by the way, the 1.5.4 version came out today

I also like K-Meleon. Thanks for mentioning the new version. :)

btw Comodo now has their own Chromium-based browser named Comodo Dragon. I tried it recently, but its lack of ad-blocking really bothered me.

I agree MBAM and SAS. Some folks really like Hitman Pro, but I personally haven't checked it out in many months.

Hazard Shield provides a malware scanner and optional realtime protection for free, but it's relatively new and unproven (AFAIK) at this point.

Also, don't forget the invaluable security/anti-malware protection provided by Sandboxie.

...Should I be able to implement the changes to DPF that I mention here, I may even consider making DPF available here. I'll see how it goes.

Dzomlija, I am interested in this type of software so I wish you the best and hope you keep DCers updated on your progress.

Also, please implement a "Show hidden folders and files" option in the new version of Duplicate Picture Finder. Good Luck. :)

Wow, Index Your Files (IYF) wasn't updated in so long (2 years) I had pretty much forgotten about it. Lately IYF has been updated every few days.

Latest version 5.0.0.7 reportedly indexes FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Linux and Network. 8)

Tizer Unlocker is another free alternative, but looks like they don't have 64 bit support yet.

You have to fill out their form before downloading the software, but I suppose that's no big deal for most folks.

« Last post by sajman99 on February 24, 2010, 06:33 PM »
Yep, according to the MyDefrag developer, the possible loss of Shadow Copies is due to "a bug in the Shadow Copy service" and can happen with any defragger.

Yep, Puran's more conventional interface suits me better as well. The boot time defrag really puts it over the top for me.

I'm likely to drop both MyDefrag and Defraggler in favor of the convenience and effectiveness of Puran.

@MerleOne:
AFAIK that's not currently possible with File Hound (at least I couldn't figure it out). However, it may be well worth your time to contact Fidel at jimmythefork.com and communicate your thoughts on the app. If my experience is any indication, he is a receptive developer and all-around nice fellow.

looks like UltraSearch doesn't find folder names, only file names.

used this today, worked like a charm

Agreed. :) Although I have other search/grep tools, I increasingly turn to File Hound as a first option. The dark background really makes everything easy for me to read without straining my eyes. I've never had issue with File Hound's results either--they're spot-on.

Another stream capture software worth a shot might be the freeware Live Downloader. I haven't yet tried it myself, but I've seen positive comments regarding its ability to easily capture all kinds of streams.

IMHO the free (for private and non-commercial use) version of Puran Defrag now gives MyDefrag some serious competition.

In particular, Puran's boot time defrag is very nice for a free defragger. I don't really know yet if I'll replace MyDefrag with Puran, but my initial impressions of Puran are favorable.
