The forum is Living Room. I'd like to move my joke https://www.donation....msg290716#msg290716 and the replay of Renegade https://www.donation....msg290717#msg290717 from the thread "silly humor..." to the thread "Cute jokes' thread".

« Last post by Giampy on June 24, 2012, 03:33 PM »
A question for the managers of the forum. I would prefer to move two messages from a thread to another thread. Is that operation laborious? Does it take much time?
However the matter is not important.

A man is near two cows, one white, one black.
A passerby asks him:
"What is their value?"
  "The white one 1000$"
"And the black one?"
  "The black one too"

"And how much milk they produce every day?"
  "The white one ten liters"
"And the black one?"
  "The black one too"

"And how much food they eat every day?"
  "The white one thirty kilograms"
"And the black one?"
  "The black one too"

"Excuse me: when I ask you something about those cows, why do you answer about the white one only?"
"Because the white one is mine"
Spoiler
"And the black one?"

One cigarette shortens our life by five minutes.
One fried meal shortens our life by ten minutes.

Living Room / Do we need other programs?
« Last post by Giampy on June 22, 2012, 09:57 AM »
There are already many word processors, archivers, text editors etc... Most of those programs are all equal.
I wonder what pushes some people to create still new similar programs.

General Software Discussion / Re: Choice.com and Choice.exe for Windows XP
« Last post by Giampy on June 18, 2012, 09:50 AM »
CHOICE.exe was removed from Windows 2000 & XP for some bizarre reason

I have read that Choice was removed from Xp because it causes instability and errors.
Someone has even dedicated a page to this damned program and he has even written a software to fix its errors: http://www.pcerrorfi...choice.exe-3604.html
Other people say that Choice is a malware/spyware.

But the good news is you can still grab a copy here is a site with instructions and downloads from Microsoft.  :)

In fact that is just the only Choice that works.

General Software Discussion / Choice.com and Choice.exe for Windows XP
« Last post by Giampy on June 17, 2012, 12:30 PM »
Hi all!
I use Windows XP and I am writing a batch file (.bat). I would like to put a Choice command, the dear old Choice command of MS-Dos 6.22 and 7. In Internet I have found some Choice commands, .com and .exe, old and new, and people declare all those programs are good for Windows XP.
Those programs don't work instead (but one).
The first time I run them (of course into the Dos window, the one opened by Cmd.exe) I get the message "Access denied", while the second time the window gets frozen and I must close it.
I am curious to understand the strange behaviour of those progams.

A man needs to do a fertility test. He goes to the doctor. The doctor gives him a phial and says him to fill it.
The following day the man comes back to the doctor and says:
"Doctor, I didn't succeed in filling it, and yet I tried in any way.
I tried with my right hand. No result.
I tried with my left hand. No result.
Then I asked my wife for help.
She tried with her right hand. No result.
She tried with her left hand. No result.
She tried with her mouth... up and down... for a long time. No result.
Then I asked my beautiful housemaid for help.
She tried with her right hand. No result.
She tried with her left hand. No result.
She tried with her mouth... up and down... for a long time. No result.

Spoiler
Doctor, what is the way to open this phial???"

Inside your replies I find encouraging words. I get to thinking those warnings about the dangerousness of the cache are a little alarmist or I have given too much weight to them.

Congratulations for your skill.
When I started this thread I wanted to post such handy address but I didn't succeed to find it.

1024px wallpapers do not make me that happy anymore...it has to be at least 5 years ago the last time I looked at such a monitor.

1080p or bigger is my credo nowadays  :)

This is 1165 x 800:

(or that they are not saving the data every so often).
The problem you are describing is likely related to something else, maybe the application they are using.

Those colleagues perfectly know that it's necessary to save every while. I can't believe that they forgot to do it.

Trouble of colleagues apart, you assert the data are written to the HD within a short time anyway, even if the cache is enabled. But are you sure? If that were true, then I don't understand why Microsoft and other people report the dangerousness of an enabled cache (i.e. loss of data).

...or you let the system write the data a few moments later

That's just the point: the system may not save data within a short time. Sometimes it takes even hours. At least two times I heard mprecations from two colleagues of mine when the power failed and they lost hours of job.

Hail!
The so called "Disk write cache" speeds up the system but I disabled it as certain data get lost if a power failure occors, even if we had performed a Save command.
Is there a way to keep that useful cache and contemporaneously to be sure that every Save command is effective?

I have to thank IainB for his valuable information.
I have converted some movies from YouTube by special online services, but it is a complicated way because there are several options to choose from and I don't know their exact meaning, besides the final quality doesn't satisfy me.
Thanks to VideoCacheView converting movies is fast, easy, direct, enjoyable, and the quality is identical to the original.
Thank you again.

I suppose there is a certain symmetry to that.

You're right. In fact this is my family:

Yes, just that.

General Software Discussion / Basic word processor and active URLs
« Last post by Giampy on May 05, 2012, 05:05 PM »
Hail!
I would need a basic word processor (just like Microsoft Wordpad) featuring active URLs.
No Html language, no Html documents: I simply deal with normal Doc/Rtf/similar documents, and when I paste an URL I want that URL automatically becomes active. That's all.
I have gathered many names of programs: Abi Word, Angel Writer, Devvicky Word, DocPad, Jarte, KeyNote Nf, MemPad, Qjot, ScratchPad, The Guide, TxtEdit, Verbum, Win32Pad, WinVi. The choice is wide.
Can you give me some sure advices?

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service
« Last post by Giampy on April 16, 2012, 08:49 AM »
I'm still using the CrashPlan trial but I cannot bring myself to commit to it because it's sitting here in the tray using 250mb of ram(!)

The CrashPlan developers seem at a complete loss as to how to prevent their application from going on a rampage consuming memory.  They know it's happening because people are complaining on the forum about it, but they can't seem to fix it.

Such situations drive me mad. Is it really necessary that CrashPlan continuously controls the activity of the user? Couldn't CrashPlan leave to the user the possibility to activate the back-up service only when he/she wishes???
