General Software Discussion / Re: Instantly Increasing Password Strength
« Last post by jgpaiva on March 23, 2011, 01:38 PM »
I use "Keypass" to store my passwords. It also offers to create random passwords with a single click.

What I really hate is that many websites limits the maximum password length.
Better yet: some truncate your password [to a smaller length] and don't tell you anything. So, when you try to use your large password generated with keepass, you can't get access. It happened to me at least once!

mwb1100: I think you have just brought a very interesting addition to this conversation!
From what I understand from her flickr page, that girl isn't even a photographer, her intent sure was not to share her work with the world.

What if your "cool" facebook profile picture got used in a publicity campaign all over the world? There are no rules against it, right? (Now that I think about it, the facebook profile picture doesn't even have a copyright notice anywhere).

ps: sorry for going slightly offtopic, but I find this also very interesting
403
I see things in a different light, as that's the way I feel with the way I work.
An example: I distribute GridMove for free for everybody but companies, so that the publicity from personal use can get me some enterprise users. And It has worked a few times already. I'm pretty sure that if I asked for a registration fee from everyone I wouldn't get 10% of the revenue I get with this licensing scheme.

I agree that there are is a important points here: his licensing was not respected. The comparison would be if someone used GridMove's sources and created a new app from it, sold it and it got very popular that would make me terribly sad. Still, if in the end some company found that they were using illegal material and wanted to buy me my version for more than 100 times the money I've gotten up to this point for this work, I'd sure be glad!

I understand it's terrible when someone's work gets misused. What I don't agree is that this specific guy is a victim in his story.

Now, the point that app raised is a different story. It's terrible that his photo is spread all over, but I guess renegade is right: today, any image becomes a stupid meme from one second to the next: any image of ourselves posted on the web could become widespread in days. This actually makes me wonder if I shouldn't rethink the places where my photographs are posted.

[edit]
AndyM: I think you made a good point also: whereas I do have a choice on the way I license GridMove, the way this guy's work was used was not his choice, I'm not sure how I feel about that.

This kind of reminds me of a psychology experiment I saw somewhere:
One person is given 2 choices:
1 - he gets 5 bucks and the person next to him gets nothing.
2 - he gets 10 bucks and the person next to him gets 20 bucks.

Personally, I would always choose option 2, but incredibly some people choose option 1.
In this matter, my opinion is this: had he never had the misuse of his picture (which I see as publicity), would he ever have the cover of the national geographic? Would he actually make any money from the picture he posted to flickr? Also, if the people who made money on his photo had to pay for it, would they even buy it? In this situation, I tend to go for the "no publicity if bad publicity" moto.

My father (a civil engineer) told me an interesting story that sounds pretty much like this: In the early 80's, when Autocad came out, it was way worse than its competitor (which I can't recall the name). However, it had a main difference: it was way easier to copy. People ended up getting hooked on Autocad since they could get it for free, and now it has a very large share in its market (which I would say it's a monopoly, but I'm not sure).

I'm pretty sure that if this guy knows how to manage his publicity from now on, I'd say he has more open doors now than he had before his picture got posted everywhere.
405
I watched the video up to the part where he said that National Geographic licensed his picture for the cover of a magazine.
Even though I do understand that people doing money on his work is terrible, he did also get some fantastic publicity out of it and ended up with a sell that he probably wouldn't have otherwise. I'm not sure if he is a victim in this story.
406
I can see how that is annoying. The same problem poses in Office 2010, it has some shortcuts on the left.

To be honest, I think moving the hotspot to the right side really is not a fix, if you have lots of tabs the problem returns. Have you tried using the middle mouse button method? (it works on the whole window!) How about moving to the edge?

I'm really sad that apps are starting to not respect the general interface in windows, and I feel like I should find a better way of launching GridMove, but I'm really out of ideas :(
407
In chrome, this actually makes sense since it has the tabs on the title bar, so there's no space for the page's title. I can see why you find it annoying, but personally I'd rather have a few more vertical pixels for the page than have the page title there.

On the other browsers, it simply just doesn't make sense :)

I really liked this, thanks Curt!

:) ok!

Looks like this is fixed, right? I can see results in google for stuff posted yesterday.
On a related note, how's the pagerank now?
411
This is an awesome idea! I will add it to GridMove (assuming you'll share it :P )

done, new version uploaded ;)

Hi!

I have moved this post to a new thread and moved to the software discussion, as it was unrelated to GridMove.

Although I can see quite some use on what you're saying, I honestly have no idea how to do it, maybe someone else will?

One small bug left - program always quits if I answer Cancel in rewrite file dialog.
:) Actually, that was intentional. But now that I think about it, you're right, it makes more sense to return to the gui so that you may change that option.

Living Room / Re: Do it yourself dropbox
« Last post by jgpaiva on March 10, 2011, 08:02 AM »
Actually, a friend of mine found out that DropBox does even more than that. It only transfers new blocks among all of its members' blocks. That is, if you try to upload a known large file (say a Ubuntu DVD or some known media), it'll upload instantly (regardless of the speed of your connection).
Good for speed, and storage space reduction at DropBox's servers, bad for privacy.
Yes, no question there. It also means that they must store all data unencrypted on their side, or they wouldn't be able to serve you a file someone else uploaded.
419
I was talking about the check for update thing, if it was to replace DC updater helper, it'd be really simple to integrate with GridMove.

ah yes, well the idea was to build these features INTO dcuhelper so yeah that would be a seamless move -- perhaps I should focus on adding some of these proposed options to enhance the update helper to support some of these update-related ideas and leave aside the issue of license keys for the time being.
Yeah, having all the key-managing and etc. incorporated into dcuhelper would simplifyintegration with any member program. Also, I really like this scheme you were describing in this thread.

Why are you afraid of this new scheme?

kartal[/b]: perhaps he's using block-based rather than file-based syncing?
With dropbox?
I would have thought any sane service to only transfer modified blocks - SpiderOak certainly does.

Here's my Coding Snack submission for March 2011 Fundraiser!
It's a response to this coding snack request

Application Name KaosGen
Version 1.2
Short Description Adds some randomness to your life
Supported OSes Windows (any?)
Web Page This one
Download Link (.exe)
Download Link (.ahk)
Version History
  • 1.2
  • 1.1
  • 1.0
Author jgpaiva

Description
This program allows you to make a random sequence from either a number range or a file with several entries.
(Read the original request for more detail)

Features
The program works in 2 ways:

  • If you run it by double-clicking:
It creates a random sequence of numbers, within the boundaries you select.
You can also choose in how many columns the output should be formated, if it should have a space to "tick" options and to what file the output should be saved.

  • If you run it by drag-dropping a file on to it:
It creates a random sequence from the lines of the file.

Planned Features
Adding support for calendar days?

Screenshots

s2.png

Usage
Installation
None, download and run

Using the Application
- Double-click the application for use #1, select "General" tab and click "Let's Go!".
- Drag&Drop a text file on to the executable to get a sequence of entries from the file.

Uninstallation
Delete the executable and the config file (KaosGen.ini)

Known Issues
None that I know of :)

Changelog
v1.2
when canceled due to file existing, return to the main gui

v1.1
added several usability features:
The program should not quit automatically after it finished generation. What if I need several random files?
Please, don't include file extension in the filename field and make the field larger. It is ok to add ".txt" to all names automatically.
If I drag-and-drop a file, the default number of columns should be 1, makes more sense.
The window asking for overwrite sometimes appears behind others. Can you make it stay always on top?
Would be nice if last used settings were saved.
The program does not have any indication of what it does. Try to use words like "random" and "sequence" on the General application page.

fixed bug:
The range of generated numbers is incorrect, lower border (default is 0) is not included in result.

v1.0
