Developer's Corner / Re: Visual Studio 11 Express to only build Metro apps

According to this blog post, the new VS comes with native Unit testing support for all VS editions. The post is not so clear about if this is also true for Code Coverage though.

When you need a checkmark to restart the application on exceptions- that might let you know that you're planning on it crashing too much.

 ;D   I can't disagree on that one!

1. We use scratch projects, often having no more than main() to try out stuff. Or we just checkout to a different working folder. And the degree of modularisation in our system is very high, so we can work on just a specific part of it.

3. VS has Find All References (Shift + F12) which works very well. Its more the presentation of the information that is lacking.

4. Totally agree. That's what I meant with 'some of it already done'. Again, it's the presentation of the information and the way to get to it that doesn't work.

I'm not against innovation, quite the contrary actually. Nevertheless, I think VS still has potential for huge improvements with real productivity gains, without having to throw everything over board. But with release cycles every two years I just think the improvements don't come fast enough.

I agree that it's interesting. I also think it's important for our trade that new tool ideas are explored. I doubt though that something like Light Table would be much of an improvement over VS for the software we write in our company today (UI and control SW for complex machinery). Most of our SW is C++, some is in C#, some is in scripting languages like Ruby or JavaScript. IDEs like Light Table primarily seem to target scripting languages.

To be honest, I'm quite happy with the evolutionary advances Visual Studio makes. VS 11 comes with features which are really supportive for the way we write SW in our company and will probably increase productivity quite a bit (e.g. auto-completion for #includes). I only wish advances would go much faster! There are tons of things which would have the potential to boost productivity. I'm thinking of things like:

<li>Better keyboard navigation and selection within the code editor (things like Ctrl + D in Sublime, or code navigation similar to VI (but not like VI ;) ))</li>
<li>Documentation-preview like Light Table would be possible just as well in VS (some of it is already done with a tool tip). But it should be better and support more formats (e.g. Doxygen-style documentation, which seems to be kind of a de-facto standard for C++ code)</li>
<li>Possibility to hide docked windows with the keyboard (not only show them)</li>
<li>Code-completion and go-to-definition with sub-second response</li>
etc.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: iPad 3 and me
« Last post by phitsc on July 18, 2012, 01:50 AM »
A retraction.  A few days ago I said:

I've played with iPads and there is no question that they beat any Android tablet hands down when it comes to responsiveness.

Today, I received my Nexus 7 tablet from Google and I have to withdraw that statement.  This thing is every bit as responsive as any iPad I've ever played with, and at 1280x800 on a 7" screen, it looks just about as sharp.

I don't know how much of this is due to the hardware and how much is Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), but I'd have to say this is the first device I've tried that gives up nothing to the iPad and has all the advantages of Android.

Great to hear!!
-lotusrootstarch (July 17, 2012, 10:19 PM)

Indeed! I just wanted to comment that I don't expect an Android tablet that can rival the iPad's responsiveness any time soon. Good to hear I was wrong.

I'm not an Apple-fan at all. The iPad is the only Apple product I own. I'm not even using iTunes (don't have it installed). Nevertheless, I don't regret buying the iPad at all. It's an excellent device and a joy to play and work with. The lack of a file system as we're used to from desktop OSes is annoying. But like wraith808 it hasn't been a real problem for me so far. To be honest, the one thing I'd like Apple to change is the keyboard. 4 button presses to enter a + is just stupid. And the lack of arrow keys or an alternative method for moving the cursor as well. The magnifying glass is a nice idea but to be honest, it just sucks. Double-tab the main button works very well to switch between apps for me.

Last but not least, buying the iPad is *the* one thing that had the most positive effect on my Android phone's battery life ;)

The FARR Windows Search plugin can do that. It has reported stability problems though which, unfortunately, I haven't been able to fix yet. You could try if it works for you though.

DonationCoder forum browser app.

But then all the Apple hipsters would be here on DC ruining the place. :'(

:P

+1 from me!

And when you've done that, port it to Android too

And no one suggested AppShopper yet. It lets you put together a wish list of apps, and whenever one of these apps is discounted (or updated), you get an email notification. I typically put apps (and games) which I think might be useful or interesting, but not something I think I need right away, on my AppShopper wish list. AppShopper also shows you the history of changes which can give a hint of when an app might be discounted the next time (or if it most likely never will be).

You're right. I need to rephrase my opinion then. I think certain features are so essential nowadays that they should be in VS Professional, most importantly Code Coverage.

I find it a shame that MS doesn't want to provide a free up-to-date version of their C++ compiler any more. I think it's a step in the wrong direction.

I'm also not happy with their VS pricing policy. 6k$ for Premium and 13k$ for Ultimate are insane. I think MS should provide Pro for free (or sub-100$), and lower the prices for Premium and Ultimate substantially. After all, VS is the main tool to write software for their OS (which I would expect is what they still make most money with).

One annoyance with at least Wuala and Spideroak is that their mobile clients for Android and iOS do not support uploading into the cloud yet.

Living Room / Re: List your (wireless) router and experiences
« Last post by phitsc on April 19, 2012, 03:49 PM »
I just bought my third wireless router to extend my Wifi setup. It's a Netgear WNDR3700 (or N600) Wireless Dual Band Router. I only just installed the router this evening, so I can't say much about its performance. Its setup was quite a disappointment though. I guess that has to do with the setup I wanted to use it for. I use one of the three routers as my main router (basically, connecting to the Internet-modem and doing DHCP). This one's located in the basement. I use the others as switches and Wifi access points, merely to extend the wireless range (not that I would live in a particularly big house, but you know how disappointing Wifi range is). They all serve the same SSID but I have them running on different channels.

Now, I bought the WNDR3700 because it is dual-band and has guest WLAN support. So I followed this excellent set of instructions to configure the router as an access point, offering a guest WLAN. Unfortunately, the important part comes right at the end:

Check Allow guest to access My Local Network in Guest Network Settings or the guest computer won't be able to access the internet.

Well, that kind of defeats having a guest network, doesn't it? I also read an excellent explanation of what might be the reason for that dilemma. In any case, I was so pissed that I installed DD-WRT onto the router. But that was only the start of 3 hours of wasted time (which I would better have spent sleeping ;) ). With the DD-WRT detour I found out that the WNDR3700 does obviously not support scheduled Wifi. I also have the WNDR3500 and it does have that feature (and I also use it on both my other Wifi routers). In the end, I re-installed stock firmware and went to bed, frustrated.

I have now made the WNDR3700 my main router. It's located in the basement, so I don't care so much that I can't switch it off over night (it doesn't reach my bedrooms anyway). Making it the router connecting to the Internet-modem also solves the 'Don't allow guests to access my local network' problem. I can't offer my guests the best-possible wifi signal, but the signal's good enough I guess. (We also do not have many guests asking for Wifi access :) )

So I guess if you use the WNDR3700 as your only router it's probably not a bad product (if you don't need scheduled Wifi). I think the price is ok for a dual-band router. I can't say anything about its performance yet.

I'm running DD-WRT on both my other routers by the way. I would maybe have left it on the WNDR3700 as well, but for one thing, people report that it performs better with the stock firmware, and for the other thing, setting up a guest network is easier with the stock firmware than with DD-WRT.

Thing is: it looks to me like many iPad apps have Dropbox support built into them.

Some Apps I bought which are not mentioned above (but some I found because of apps mentioned above ;) ):

- Byword (like iA Writer but has Markdown preview)
- Calengoo (Google Calendars. I'm using it already on my Android Phone)
- FiftyThree Paper (It might be over-hyped, but I kind of like it. Well, it needs PDF export, but I'm sure that'll come.)
- Flipboard (might be over-hyped as well, but it sure does look cool)
- Fing (discover what's on your network. I know it from Android)
- BUZZ Viewer HD (file browser / viewer with SMB capability). If someone knows FileBrowser and this one, which one do you like better? (i.e. should I buy FileBrowser as well?)

I'm still undecided on a Notes app. I'm currently trying UPAD Lite (which work quite well, so I'm thinking about buying the full version). But I think Noteshelf could work just as well. I really wish I could compare paid apps like I can on Android (i.e. if you uninstall within 15 minutes after buying you get a refund).

Seems like there's no way around Dropbox if you're an iTunes-shunning, no-other-Apple-products using user :(. It seems to be the de-facto alternative to iCloud (which has no Windows client that can automatically sync documents at the moment).

So if someone still needs a Dropbox account and wants to help me get more free space, please use the following referral link:

Because of frustration about decent Android alternatives I got myself an iPad (assuming the Transformer Infinity will be available around next Christmas  >:()

So my question for existing iPad owners: which Apps do you consider worth installing / buying?

I've been comparing EditPad Pro, Hippo Edit and Sublime Text 2 recently (installed and worked with trials of all of them) and have to say that although the most expensive of these three, I like Sublime Text the most.

The multi-monitor functionality can be disabled in the plugin if you only want the centering (although with one monitor it doesn't make a difference).

... It could be especially useful for multimonitor users, to have it appear centered on "current" monitor.
That would make the multi-monitor plugin mostly obsolete, which would not be a bad thing ;)

Developer's Corner / Re: A myth called the Indian programmer
« Last post by phitsc on February 15, 2012, 04:44 AM »
I've conducted a fair amount of job interviews with indian programmers about 3 years ago when the company I was working for at that time was forced by its owner to hire indian programmers for our R&D departement. I have to admit that the experience was quite disenchanting. Of the maybe 20 candidates I interviewed, only one had the skill level we wished to hire (SW engineer with at least 2 years of experience). In the end, we couldn't hire him because our owner found him to be too expensive! What stroke me was that basically all of the candidates were able to answer all of the programming-related questions (mostly concerning C++ and OO), even about advanced topics. But the code samples we requested from them showed a completely different picture of their programming proficiency. Some of the code I saw made me ask myself if the respective applicant actually really wanted a job. In the end it proofed surprisingly difficult to hire the amount of people we were requested to hire (only 3 at that time). I was working for several months with the first programmer we hired. While she was not an experienced programmer (which is what we were actually looking for), she at least was very careful and precise, and also willing to learn. Later, when additional suitable people were found, we learned that turnover would become a problem in a way which is unknown in Europe. One guy didn't even show up on the day he was supposed to start, but called instead to tell us that he found a different position in the meantime.
