There does not appear to be a proper way of adding the Anniversary - or should I say adversary - edition to a domain. Damn thing said it was on the domain, but it keeps telling me the password is wrong (it ain't) WTF!?!

No local users option listed in Computer Management anymore?!?

Gaaaaa!!! Pissing off the Admin is not a good introduction to an "Update" MS!

Give this a shot: http://techibee.com/...-for-uptime-exe/1728

It's an updated version of the original MS uptime (command line) utility that will quickly list out all of the boot and shutdown events.

Agreed, I've never seen an unwind that required a disk. And I've installed 10 on a bunch of different machines from a single downloaded image. There's even a utility available to expand and convert the MS auto delivered esd package to an .iso.

Just out of curiosity, couldn't you scare up an external USB NIC to get the thing online just long enough to get what you need? Hell even if you return it to the store when you get done for some contrived reason it's a Quick-N-Dirty way out of your current Catch-22... :D

While historically adverse to all things cloud...I have been experimenting with the Azure online backup as of late. And while it's not a free service, if you go with blob only cold storage (which compressed backups like Windows backup are) it is surprisingly economical.

I did bare metal backups on two servers to a staging area which resulted in ~364GB of data. The Azure backup software then compressed it down to ~150GB for upload to the cloud. This leaves plenty of space for versioning (which is totally automated) in the 1TB of (cold blob) storage you can get for $25 a month. There is also no fixed "package" rates so if you use less space - say 500GB for a given month - then it's only $12 for that month.

They do have a "premium" charge for downloads, but it's pennies per Gig, and uploads are free.

Just a thought.

I also have the program sending out SMS text messages, however I need a new modem, which I ordered, to handle sending out MMS text messages.

A modem?? You should be able to just Email those to the provider in question's message server: [email protected]. They usually have two different target addresses, one for plain text, and one for media stuff.

I got it just from context.  It just seemed cool

I tried looking it up in the Urban Dictionary. There are some alternative definitions there that may generate a laugh or two.  One in particular I don't even want to paraphrase here.  Let's just say I laughed out loud even though I am sitting in a library(shhhh!)  :)

I'm personally afraid of the urban dictionary after a few encounters.  Things I never wanted to know, and hope were jokes.

Amen to that!

burnt cornflake

;D  Is that your term?  Or an actual term?

It's from the old expression: I feel like the one burnt cornflake on the bottom of the cereal box of life.

So it's me euphemistically trying to imply something without actually saying it. What's that Irish phrase they're currently in hot water for at the UN - Surely you know for yourself! - It's kinda like that. :D

Because they're one of the more reputable groups (quality product...) on the darker side
Who are they? Never heard of them before.

I never dealt with them directly, but they've been online for over a decade. And back when, if you needed an "Extended Demo" of something they were guaranteed to have a quality, fast downloading, EvilWare free copy of it. I never got a burnt cornflake from them once...and I used to "trial" a lot of software back when ... To further my (self) education.. :D

They always had a very short list of 6-10 items ephemerally available, but it was always top shelf best-of-the-best kind of stuff.

As of late (last few years) I think they've basically gone legit...or at least are sticking to the upper end of the gray area.

An anti spying program with source code from WZor ... Now that is interesting.

Why is that so interesting?  Just curious.

Because they're one of the more reputable groups (quality product...) on the darker side, so they are trust worthy and they have the impetus to be through in their analysis and handling of getting the OS hushed up properly. And with the source code provided there is also great learning opportunity about what all needs to be done.

Just for clarity, can you confirm that he can Skype call other people with/without any sound issues?

Hm... the SRP protocol ... Isn't that the one that's supposed to be Dictionary Attack resistant, and perfectly secure even when weak passwords are used because the PW is never actually exchanged with the server?
Isn't the main point of SRP that you're authenticated through establishing proof of you knowing the password, without actually sending the password? There's nothing about that which prevents dictionary attacks or (other forms of) brute-forcing.

I was just having a bit of fun with the bullet point level description of what the protocol does vs. TV description of what was likely to have - couldn't be their fault happened. So preventing it no - I'd already questioned the apparent lack of lockouts earlier. It just strikes me that the way the protocol is designed it inherently mitigates BFing by eating up time with procedural shenanigans, thereby reducing the rate that guesses can be made at.

Requring a new session per login attempt isn't a bad idea, but it's more important to pad out the first couple of login attempts to several-hundred milliseconds and then do exponential backoff (with some upper limit to avoid people locking you out of your account by sending bad guesses), and perhaps some temporary IP ban after a number of failed attempts. You need to balance user friendliness (and aforementioned malicious lockout) against mitigating brute-force attacks.

Totally agree ... I wonder if that type of system could be packaged into a drop-in/plug-in type module for some of the existing web systems currently available?

So it would be entirely plausible that a brute force attack would be able to guess passwords.

I'm not entirely sure it is at this point. At least not at a really high rate of speed. Because that's one of the issues that the SRP protocol -(which they say they're use)- was designed to protect against, by only allowing one login attempt per session. So if the BF attempt has to keep creating a new session, that - I would hope - would/should serve to slow down the attack quite a bit.

This Just In from the piss yourself laughing department.

Well, we are not testing any email/password combinations if you think that and we also can't see your passwords, since we use the Secure Remote Password (SRP) protocol and therefore do not store your passwords. What we do is check, if the email addresses used for TeamViewer, have been part of a leak. You can do so yourself using www.haveibeenpwned.com.

Hm... the SRP protocol ... Isn't that the one that's supposed to be Dictionary Attack resistant, and perfectly secure even when weak passwords are used because the PW is never actually exchanged with the server?

Yet TV's primary defense is silly users using easy to guess - er... with a dictionary - passwords.

So they intentionally used a protocol that is designed to compensate for bad user behavior, because it compensates for bad user behavior, and then deflect blame because of bad user behavior ... Really? Is Jack Sparrow writing their PR material?

Above Quote is from here: https://www.reddit.c..._teamviewer_see_our/

http://arstechnica.c...n-mass-account-hack/
After reading through the comments there.

Okay, this is getting ugly - where's the popcorn?

With the massive justificational back and forth, the thing that seems to be most consistently appearing is the ability of - the attackers - computer to guess X passwords per second ... which automagically makes most - if not arguably all - passwords less that 20 something characters "easily guessable. And then the "need" for 2FA get's brandished over, and over, and over... *Sigh*

Why does everybody keep glossing right past lockout limits?? I mean WTF - If a system like that is allowing 3+ login attempts per second - like anybody can actually type that fast... - without locking down the account. I don't care how many whoop-de-do factors they have in place, their system is fundamentally flawed...and the fault is theirs.

Man talk about sticking hard to the cover story...

As you have probably heard, there have been unprecedented large scale data thefts on popular social media platforms and other web service providers. Unfortunately, credentials stolen in these external breaches have been used to access TeamViewer accounts, as well as other services.

We are appalled by the behaviour of cyber criminals, and are disgusted by their actions towards TeamViewer users. They have taken advantage of common use of the same account information across multiple services to cause damage.

Trying to hard much???

And how exactly do they explain (away) the part where it is mainly (read only) the TV v11 users that are getting "randomly" hit??

Then there's the we're not going to call it a (security) update...update. That they hung together in only days after - but not in response to - the not attack.

Saving face is one thing ... But this is just sad.

Given the issues we've been having with our current SSL Trusted Root signed VNC variant. I've been looking for something mainstream that our company can jump to for remote support, that won't constantly waste time talking end users through security warning.

Hay did I mention that this is a digitally signed by an SSL trusted root certificate provider that still constantly gets flagged by damn near everything??? (Signed binaries my ass)

Anyhow TV was on my list of -(mainstream)- replacement companies to investigate last week ... But they're not on that list anymore.
