General Software Discussion / Re: How to enable NAT Loopback on ZyXEL C1000Z router?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 03, 2013, 05:28 PM »
Thanks. I've seen similar instructions before, but they don't seem to work on the C1000Z.

Here's what I get:

Here are some more links (thanks Lanux128!) with similar instructions which also don't seem to help me. )c:

General Software Discussion / How to enable NAT Loopback on ZyXEL C1000Z router?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 03, 2013, 02:23 AM »
Hi folks,

I recently got a new ZyXEL C1000Z DSL router (provided by my new ISP--I didn't get a choice) which unfortunately doesn't have NAT Loopbackw enabled by default. Through some Googling I've found reports that it is possible to enable NAT Loopback on the router, but so far I've failed to find any instructions that actually work. Can any of you fine folks with better Googlefu skills than me find a solution?

The reason why I want this feature enabled is so that I can use a service such as DynDNS to automatically update my IP address, then I can just type something like MyIP.dyndns.com to get my IP from anywhere. This is also helpful to connect to my own computer even on my LAN for multiplayer games--but this where the IP loopback is required. With it disabled, the router does not allow MyIP.dyndns.com to resolve to the router's (ISP's) IP address.

Any help or suggestions?

Thanks!

Non-Windows Software / ANDROID: What's a good recipe viewing app?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 02, 2013, 07:05 PM »
Hi folks,

I'm looking for an app for my Android tablet (Nexus 7) that will display my recipes so I can easily refer to it while cooking.

Note that I'm not necessarily looking for an app that gives me access to an online repository of recipes, though that would be nice. But what I'm really looking for is something I can enter my own recipes into to refer to.

I did a search on the Google Play Store and found an app for Big Oven which looks nice and I'll definitely be giving it a try, but I figured I'd ask the opinion of anybody else here who might already have done this search and tried out a few and come to a conclusion on a particular app.

Thanks!

Dropbox should work just fine. Any file in your dropbox folder you can simply right-click and select "Share Dropbox link" and it will take whoever clicks it to a page that has a big blue download button. No need (for others) to create an account or enter a captcha or anything. And no need for you to pay to use this feature.

« Last post by Deozaan on September 01, 2013, 06:59 PM »
Thanks for the link, mouser. Very interesting read. (c:

The takeaways I have from my brief time with the two devices is that the inexpensive Printrbot is actually a hell of a little machine. It's not a great first 3D printer, since making it work well and produce good results requires a whole lot of time, attention, and skill. But $299 in kit form or $399 assembled is a hell of a bargain. It fits very nicely into the niche its creators are carving out for it: it's an inexpensive way to get a good-quality 3D printer out there for those who can't afford a Replicator or something similar. If you pick one up, you can expect to be required to immerse yourself into the world of mods and tweaking, chasing that perfect printing experience forever.

The Makerbot Replicator 2, on the other hand, is both magical and disappointing. When it works, it's awesome. When it doesn't work—which, in my experience is about 75 percent of the time—it's incredibly frustrating. The little Printrbot gets a pass for needing aftermarket tweaks to work properly. The Makerbot Replicator 2, which costs almost eight times as much, gets no such pass. If I paid $2,200 of my own money for this device as it currently exists, I would have long since returned it. The Makerbot folks continued to work with me up until this article's deadline on trying to get the Replicator 2 working correctly, and those efforts are still ongoing, but as of this moment I still have a very expensive machine that wastes a lot of filament with failed prints.

And yet those moments when everything works properly and the Replicator produces a perfectly formed print are magical. The Printrbot, even at its best, produced rough and sometimes saggy prints. The Makerbot Replicator's output is clear and smooth, with sharply defined edges and facets. When it prints, it prints very well. I've got a big dinosaur, a bunch of Ars coasters, some Companion Cubes, and a Walken-embossed cowbell to prove it. It's a wonderful machine—it just feels like it's designed to fail and only manages to print successfully on accident.

Truthfully, I wouldn't buy either of these devices. The Makerbot Replicator is ludicrously expensive for a hobbyist purchase, and the Printrbot requires too much time to get it working right. However, maker-types with an itch to tinker should absolutely consider the Printrbot Simple. For all its flaws, the $299 kit is still a good value.

It's not just for monthly bills. It's so that you can put every dollar you own to use, rather than thinking you only have to pay $50 a month in your phone/netflix bills and the rest can be spent on whatever, whenever. When you discipline yourself and assign your dollars to something, you're less likely to get caught off guard when your semi-annually (every six months) car insurance payment comes up. Or when your bi-annually (every 2 years) car registration comes up. Basically, it encourages you to put aside a little bit each month (essentially as "savings") so that when your car breaks down or that $300 insurance payment comes due, you're not suddenly scrapped for cash, because you were smart and thought ahead and broke it down into $50 monthly payments to yourself.

Etc.

What I described is Rule 1 of YNAB's Method. But there's a whole lot more than that, and you can read about YNAB's Method here (click on each of the four rules for details).

Build up speed inside a massive particle collider and generate high-energy collisions to discover strange new particles. Use precise timing and fast reflexes to navigate a subatomic world where floors and ceilings don't exist. Will you be fast enough to find the elusive Boson X?

Boson X is free for PC, Mac and Linux. iOS version coming soon!

Give it a try and see what score you can get. Here are my current high scores:

I'd recommend You Need a Budget (YNAB) for PC/Mac (you just missed it on sale on Steam for about $15) to manage your budget and then use the accompanying Android app.

It includes Cloud Sync (using Dropbox) from your desktop to Android (and vice versa). I've been using YNAB for about 5 years and it's pretty great. I know you don't want to pay for the app, but YNAB is worth it, IMO.

Sorry, but Dubstep cat borders - ??? - upon cruelty.  And the cat obviously does not enjoy - the ears kinda give that away.  Irresponsible owner, in my opinion.

I agree. Making a cat listen to dubstep is clearly animal cruelty. The ears totally give it away. Kitty is not a fan of dubstep. :P

Bummer. Looks like the Innsmouth Magazine EPUBs are flawed. The vol 1-4 has no cover image and the vol 5-7 has the vol 1-4 cover image.

I just found out that you can upload your DRM-free eBooks to your Google Play Books account and use Google's eReader to read your books.

EDIT: I also just found out that you can download the books you buy from the Google Play store as EPUB or PDF format!

I saw Man of Steel last night. It was decent. But there were quite a few things that didn't make sense to me. Some of it was fridge logic. But other parts had be wondering while it was happening.

Renegade recently posted about Bastiat's The Candlemakers' Petition, which was satire. But it is very fitting:

Here's another bit of fun about the sun:

The text:

http://bastiat.org/en/petition.html

A snippet from it:

We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a rival who apparently works under conditions so far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun, is waging war on us so mercilessly we suspect he is being stirred up against us by perfidious Albion (excellent diplomacy nowadays!), particularly because he has for that haughty island a respect that he does not show for us.

For anyone wondering like I was, Replicant is an open source Android operating system. Or something.

Sounds cool in theory, but the question is: how does it run on my hardware?
