General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis Backup
« Last post by Renegade on December 23, 2012, 06:31 PM »
Renegade was once saved by Acronis, but I am joining the choir of this thread...

... Poof! BSOD!
I just about could have cried...
...
Long & short, I was able to pull out a backup from the Acronis non-stop backup. Phew~! Lost some of the audio, but I at least got the lion's share.
It's good to hear that somehow is having a much better experience with Acronis than I have had. In the end I got so disappointed that I uninstalled my licensed Acronis TrueImage2010.

That was for recovering a file, and it did it. I figured that if it worked there, it should work. :(

This was a full system restoration... Cripes... Not good.

I think I may well look into Paragon.

That's an exercise in futility.

I think someone is a bit older than me~! ;D

Count on it bro! Count on it.  ;D

Will do~! :D

I remember in 1996 looking at the Internet and thinking what total crap it was. I'd been using Gopher and Archie before that, and the "Internet" as email, etc. But the graphical "revolution" and whatnot seemed pretty lame at the time. Yeah, it sucked then, but man... HTML5 has a LOT of promise.

Now my ideas are fundamentally different. I think in terms of openness and all that. I still don't like some of HTML5, but, functionally, it's great. I would much rather have open standards that aren't patent encumbered. But, we have what we have.

Well, I'd like to keep some of my rants in the Basement. Like this one:

But I do have a minor rant about backups here:

https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=33406.0

Who would have thought that you'd need to make backups of your backups in order to use your backups?

Dot matrix printers... Wow. To think that I remember that stuff. :D

In my case I wish I could forget them. Especially those old mainframe high-speed line printer models that used to come with acoustic isolation cabinets so they wouldn't damage people's hearing after repeated exposure. Too bad you used to have to "pop the top" to keep them cool enough to not "thermal off" if you were running some huge time-critical print job - like several thousand payroll checks - or a monthly 100,000 page corporate financial "stack." One printer was bad enough. But when you had five or six of those monsters cranking simultaneously, it was actually painful to be in the same room with them.
 :tellme:

I think someone is a bit older than me~! ;D

I remember those huge cabinet sized printers with feed-paper in university. But I don't remember them being particularly loud. A bit, but nothing too bad. But 4 or 5 in a room? Never saw that. Probably very different things that what you've mentioned.

I had a DMP at home. Bought it with money I made mowing lawns and delivering papers and stuff. $500 was a lot of money back then, which is about what it cost.

Be happy, Father Christmas is arriving!!!

Oh damn, something went wrong...

I love fun Santa stories. Here's more unfunny Santa stories that are kind of fun. Well, fun in a kind of wonky way...

http://www.huffingto...video_n_2349446.html

Santa getting arrested yet again!

Man, I tell ya, that fat bastard thinks he can bring his goddamn goodwill and cheer to who-fucking-ever he damn well pleases! Thank god we have the pigs to clamp down on that BS~! :P

And spreading his infection to the children! Trying to corrupt the youth by getting them to spread propaganda about peace and joy and love and giving and stuff... god... the nerve! :P

I propose we execute Santa now! Put an end to this madness and insanity! ;D

(For more insane fun, search for "santa arrested".)

Plus most videogames have a feature where if you screw up you get killed. That basic rule in nearly every game serves as a constant reminder that one cannot simply do this kind of thing for real, because in reality you can't respawn if you mess up and get shot.

Then again, not to overestimate the intelligence of some gamers, they may well think that "the game will go on", and not really contemplate the consequences of their actions. Remember, this is the same crowd where you get reports of people dying because they forgot to do things like eat, drink, and sleep.

Yeah but such happenings are a minority among people who play videogames. There are the casuals- people who enjoy a game once and a while but don't seriously play any particular game, the weekend warriors (Like me) who will sit down with a game on a weekend or a night with a few hours free and enjoy it in depth, and the hardcore gamers who other than playing their game do nothing else that they don't absolutely have to do.

For the most part such events and related phenomena such as videogame addicts only appear in the hardcore category, as other types tend to maintain enough of an attachment to reality to not be consumed by their game for more than a session's duration at a time.

Otherwise said games would have long been deemed hazardous to one's health in more severe ways than just the risks of sitting around too much enjoying them, and would have been either regulated like smokes or outright pulled from shelves.

True enough. There's always an idiot in every crowd, and there's always someone ready to accept a Darwin Award. It doesn't really matter how innocuous an activity it - somebody will find a way to make it dangerous. Kind of reminds me about the guys out drinking and proving how macho they were... One fellow used a chainsaw to lop off his foot. The next fellow, not to be outdone, decapitated himself.

General Software Discussion / Acronis Backup
« Last post by Renegade on December 22, 2012, 08:48 PM »
Well, I am very unimpressed with Acronis.

I got sick of my Windows installation and problems, so I figured I'd restore it to a previously good config. I've got Acronis, so no problem, right? Wrong.

None of the backups except for the earliest one were good. Acronis apparently randomly deletes portions of the backups. So, if you actually want to make use of the software, you have to back up your backups. How silly is that?

So, I'm currently reinstalling Visual Studio, and will spend the next god-knows-how-long reinstalling numerous programs I need to work.

Very unimpressed.

BTW - My other comment there was:

Elsewhere, Renegade wrote about his NANY submission:

The main benefit is that it is impossibly easy to use. If you have a brain cell, you can use it without any problems. There is ZERO complexity.

I need help with this! It's too hard for me!

:P

(Kidding. I haven't looked at it yet! But that's prob. an accurate prediction! )

I really doubt that anyone is stupid enough to not be able to use it.

BTW - My other comment there was:

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / N.A.N.Y. 2013 Submission - RAT (Renegade Audio Transcoder)
« Last post by Renegade on December 22, 2012, 02:19 AM »
NANY 2013 RAT - Renegade Audio Transcoder

Application Name RAT - Renegade Audio Transcoder
Version v0.2
Short Description Transcodes audio and video files into FLAC, MP3, WMA, WAV, or OGG audio files.
Supported OSes Windows
Web Page You're looking at it! :D
Download Link Download RAT
System Requirements
  • .NET 4
  • DirectX 9+
Version History
  • v0.2 - Added MKV and FLV support (via FFMPEG), improved UI with a few tweaks
  • Initial release - no history (v0.1)
Author Renegade : http://renegademinds.com/ or http://cynic.me/

Description
RAT is a very simple audio transcoder. It hides all the complexity of file formats and options, and instead outputs high quality audio files. It accepts both audio files and video files as input.

The UI is extremely minimalistic, and only accepts file input from drag & drop or the command line. File open/save buttons were deemed just too much clutter and completely unnecessary.

While it's obviously not for professional use, the settings are chosen with high quality in mind, but slight roll backs where processing times don't justify any additional small improvements in quality, or where the same holds true for file sizes.

The main benefit is that it is impossibly easy to use. If you have a brain cell, you can use it without any problems. There is ZERO complexity. Even files are automatically named:

RAT-Encoded_<filename>.<ext>

They are saved in the same folder as the original.

Features
The program supports the following output formats:

  • FLAC
  • MP3
  • WMA
  • WAV
  • OGG

Input support includes most audio formats and several popular video formats, e.g. AVI and MP4. More can be added upon request -- please include a test file though.

Supported input formats currently include:

  • AIF
  • AIFF
  • AVI
  • CDA
  • FLAC
  • FLV (added in v0.2)
  • M4A
  • MKV (added in v0.2)
  • MP1
  • MP2
  • MP3
  • MP4
  • OGG
  • WAV
  • WMA
  • WMV

** NOTE ** The actual program supports more than it allows for user input, and user input is limited. e.g. You cannot transcode an APE file, but it actually supports APE. These limits were artificially imposed because I do not have test files for some formats, e.g. APE.

Planned Features
No additional features are planned at the moment. Perhaps if it is popular enough, I may entertain adding in some bells & whistles. If you want more formats supported, tell me and give me a file to test with.

Screenshots
Drag & drop a file onto RAT:

Choose an output format:

Screenshot - 2012-12-22 , 7_03_41 PM.png

Click for a quick transcoding:

Screencast of Usage
Quick illustration of transcoding AVI, MP3 and M4A files (video is in HD so you can see easier):

Usage
Installation
Unzip the RAT.zip file, then run the RAT.exe file. No installation required. (You must have .NET 4 installed.)

Using the Application
The program is extremely simple to use. You only need 1 brain cell over and above the brain cell you use to breathe with. Well, unless you can hold your breath for 5 seconds... ;)

1) Drag & drop an audio or video file onto it.
2) Choose an output format.
3) Click the "Encode Now!" button.

Your new audio file is placed in the same directory as your original. It is named "RAT-Encoded_..." with the remainder being the original file name.

Uninstallation
Delete the RAT folder. No uninstallation required.

Tips
It accepts a command line argument:

rat.exe "full path to input file" [output format: flac|wav|ogg|mp3|wma]

e.g.:

rat.exe "c:\some\path\to\a\video.avi" wav
rat.exe "c:\some\path\to\a\music file.mp3" ogg

But, you still need to click the button.

It also supports CDs. Just drag & drop the CDA file onto the program. You'll need to choose an output folder. The default is the "My Music" folder.

Known Issues
No known issues.

The auto-dealer issue could easily have been solved through contracts. Passing laws was not necessary. Contract law was already in place to protect the dealers.

Renny you know better than that! Why would Contract Law have any force if we can't even follow our own Consitution?!   :o

You know, every time I think of the US Constitution, I'm jealous. It's by far the best one ever written, which makes its evisceration all that much sadder. :'(
