General Software Discussion / Re: Want to print artist/album list of ogg/mp3 files
« Last post by skwire on November 18, 2010, 11:37 AM »
skwire, you are da man!!
I love this program.

Great to hear.  Thanks for the feedback.

I'm thinking about the various artists issue.  I'm going to run into that also.  But it depends on how people tag these files.  I would think that most people have the "album" tag the same for an album with various artists.  Now, how do you deal with all the different names under "artist"?  Well, one thing the program can do is if it detects multiple artists for the same album name, it can assume that all of those are together, and either say <various> in the artist cell, or actually list all the different names (but that might be long and ugly looking).

Well, that's where the so-called "ALBUM ARTIST" tag comes in.

The problem with that is the situation where two different artists name an album the same thing.  Especially with stuff like "Greatest hits".  So, in a case like that, maybe the program can THEN check to see if the files are in the same folder.  But then what if you have the folders split into 'Disc 1" "Disc 2"...so the folders will be different, but it's really the same album?  ugh...this can get complicated.  but not impossible!  i can do this...give me time.

Agreed, there are a bunch of different scenarios that could occur so, at best, anything you do will be imperfect.  However, to give you peace of mind, Album Printer does handle "different artist with the same album name" issue.  It combines the artist name with the album name and uses that to compare against its list.  So, in other words, "Artist_A - Greatest Hits" is considered different from "Artist B - Greatest Hits."

Yeah, that's the Nano, though. It's only the Touch and the iPhone that lock the user into iTunes...

I did some more research into this and it seems that, if you want to use SharePod with an iPhone or iPod Touch, you need to have iTunes installed but it does not need to be running whilst using SharePod to transfer files.  If I ever get access to an iPhone or Touch, I'll test it out.

Not as far as I know.  I use it for my daughter's Nano and I don't have iTunes installed.

I like the look of the sony's, and it's good to know there's no proprietry software req's (I had a vague feeling that this wasn' always the case).  FWIW the model quoted is listed at $250 here

What the hell?  Sheesh, for that, I'll buy you one here and ship it to you.  I paid around $115 USD.

It is, but it isn't... You HAVE to have iTunes to transfer music to and from an iPod Touch or an iPhone.

No, you don't.  SharePod supports iPhones and the iPod Touch.

My daughter has an iPod Nano and we've NEVER used iTunes so I don't think this "iTunes lock-in" issue is much of an issue at all.  I just use SharePod to transfer files from the file server to her iPod.  As for me, I have the same exact player as app's daughter, a Sony NWZS545BLK 16GB.  I chose it because:

  • I'm not a fan of the touchwheel interface of the iPods.
  • It was inexpensive.
  • You can navigate via the folder structure you used when putting files on it.
  • Doubles as a voice recorder in a pinch.

I really only use it on the plane when taking business trips.  In addition to music, I'll usually convert a few tv shows or anime episodes and watch them as well.  The 2.4" screen is suprisingly watchable...even on a plane.

Yes, it is.  What you want to do may not be elegant...but it certainly can be done.

I totally agree with mouser regarding user options.  Most times, it's more of a pain in the ass to implement an options GUI than it is to implement the actual option.  Regarding the colour request, I'll see what I can do.  =]

I can make a right-click shell extension to do this.  All your users would have to install it, of course.  Acceptable?

Thank you very much! The shortest setting is once per minute, but I guess that will have to do.

If once per minute is too short, April, I can write you up Coding Snack to do what you want.

eleman, did you still need this utility?  I can make a Coding Snack out of it if so.  I assume you just need a simple text listing like this:

somename.ttf --> Arial
othername.ttf --> Courier New
...

Let me know.  Thanks.

Here's mine.  Plenty fast and plenty stable.

Theoretically, yes, it would be 1.25 mbps.  Keep in mind, though, that streams aren't always continuous as I described above.
3950
A 128 kbp/s stream will take up just that over time, 128 kilobits per second.  It's usually not a completely continuous stream since most players will cache a bit, play, cache a bit more, play, etc.  In other words, streaming audio stations typically take up very very little of your internet connection.  However, keep in mind that that is per user of said stream.
