Ah Spicolli! Great quote. You've made me want to dig out the dvd and watch it all over again - and not just because of Phoebe Cates. OK, BECAUSE of Phoebe Cates! Curse you, Kevin Kline, for making an honest woman of her!

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: College Grade Calculator
« Last post by Darwin on November 19, 2007, 06:04 PM »
You can whip something like this up in a spreadsheet such as Excel in seconds... For example, to compute what 76.5/95 represents if the assignment/exam is worth 35% of  your grade you just enter 76.5 into a cell, hit tab and type "=((x/95)*100)*0.35" without the quotes/inverted commas. Hit enter and there ya go, your score converted into its weighting for the course. NB x = the name of the cell that your raw score was entered into, something like "D8".

Now for the GPA... that's awkward because every college/university has a different scale 4.0, 9.0, etc. and every university has a different way of calculating your GPA. The variables involved would need to be customizable in whatever solution you come up with (or someone comes up with). The two suggestions above work, but the GPA solution is university specific...

I went with rarely - I do recall some rudeness (and have probably been guilty of it too) but it is indeed a very uncommon occurrence.

Yes, sadly (and inexplicably to my mind) NetSnippets was abandoned. At any rate, both of them do include the url, regardless of whether or not your selecting the whole page or just a portion of it.

Best File/Folder Compare Tool / Re: Araxis Merge is still my favorite
« Last post by Darwin on November 19, 2007, 08:27 AM »
Just to clarify - you'll note from the review that in March of 2005 BC 3 was supposed to be "well on it's way to release". Almost three years later they've yet to ship a beta... This isn't meant as a criticism of Scooter software (BC 2.5 does what it does very well and I'd far rather they ship something relatively stable when they do enter beta testing) per se, but this is starting to take on a Longhorn-esque developmental flavour!

Now having said the above - looking at Araxis Merge all over again all I can say is: BUGGER! $129 gets a standard licence WITHOUT the three way merge. That costs $269! Ouch. I've no doubt that it's a killer app, but there's a lot of sticker shock! I do hope that BC gets released soon, but I'm not holding my breath...

General Software Discussion / Re: Fixing an XP Laptop, when to give up?
« Last post by Darwin on November 19, 2007, 08:07 AM »
Thanks for the reminder, nontroppo! I'm off to run a backup now... I think it's time I invested in a proper external harddrive (a TB drive in its own cooled case as opposed to old notebook drives in simple USB enclosures) that I can leave running whenever my computer is connected to it and not worry about it getting too hot. This way I can actually use the scheduled backup feature in TrueImage and avoid forgetting to do them once a week...

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by Darwin on November 19, 2007, 07:59 AM »
@nontroppo - I'm jumping in making some assumptions here, but wanted to note that I *think* Carol was referring to things like CMOS batteries WRT Macs computers (as opposed to the batteries that power laptops) and the non-user replaceable batteries in iPods. Of course, in the portable music sphere Apple is far from being the only manufacturer doing this - AFAICT Samsung, Sandisk, Creative, etc. all design their players this way. I don't know if this is to reduce the likelihood of the end-user mucking up their player or if it's got more to do with the technology and keeping the size down (probably a combo of both thought...). Hope I haven't misinterpreted what you were drivng at, Carol  :o
3934
I have mixed feelings about it, Carol. Sort of looks like one giant command console. Actually, I always *think* that I'll love white on black but it never lasts long for me because I find that it bothers my eyes. I used to set up Windows 3.11 with this scheme (High Contrast I think they called it) and marvel at how futuristic and clean it looked, but I could never leave it that way for very long. The Aero interface in Vista has the same effect on me... Anyway, I think it looks cool but I know I'd be looking to change it within 30 minutes.

What I'd like is a way of clipping a section of text from a Web page, and saving it with the URL included automatically.  I do it now with a batch file that prompts me, but then I have to Alt-Tab back and forth to to Crl-L, Ctrl-C; quick and easy, but it could be quicker and easier still.

Hmmm...  going off topic...

If I'm reading this correctly, both Evernote and NetSnippets allow you to do this. If you can still find a copy of the free version of Netsnippets somewhere, it does this, brilliantly. Evernote does it as well and is available in a free version.

Newsletter for November 19th, 2007
Codename "Postcard Club"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"

1. Newsletter Editorial

It's Darwin here, welcoming you to another edition of the Donationcoder newsletter. I'm going to keep my initial comments brief, so that you can get right to the meat of the newsletter, but would like to take this opportunity to say a big welcome to everyone who has joined over the past two weeks and to encourage everyone to participate on the forum if you haven't already.

We'll soon be having our 3rd annual fundraiser, and we're asking for your help in deciding how to celebrate and how we should approach the delicate issue of asking for financial support from the public.  Let us know how we can make the site more useful for you!

2. Official Announcements

Calling all programmers -- we need your participation! Throughout November and December we are running some fun programming contests.  To help celebrate our Getting Organized Experiment 2007, November's programming contest is to pick some small productivity-related utility you can code in a few days and enter it in the Getting Organized Programming Challenge.  You only have until December 1st to submit something, but everyone who enters will be recognized.  Now's your chance to participate on the site and create something others will find useful.

Josh has arranged another excellent discount and giveaway for this month. If you don't already have a HIPS solution on your machine, you should check out Defense Wall HIPS, which is offered to all supporting members at a 30% discount and is available as a prize in the November Giveaway.

3. Your Input is Requested

Donationcoder is first and foremost a community and thrives because of member activity and participation. Not sure where to jump in?  Here are some good threads to get you started:

4. Living Room

JoTo is a frequent poster and prominent member of DonationCoder.  He's recovering from a serious health scare and we'd like your help to cheer him up! Please visit mouser's post about this ("DonationCoder Postcard Club Activate!"), and send him a postcard in the hospital.

Mouser, inevitably, ran afoul of a mouse a couple of weeks ago and posted about it in a thread called "Pet Peeve: I will never buy a rechargeable mouse again for as long as i live". Not only did he find that he is not alone, but he also found that DC'ers have strong opinions, and are divided, on the subject of wireless mice.

Finally, it is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Using this logic, plagiarism is high praise indeed. Our own zridling (Zaine) maintains an excellent resource called The Great Software List that someone liked so much they copied the entire homepage and pasted it into a blog. Read about it in this thread: "Blog steals Zaine's Great Software List" and post your thoughts.

5. General Software Discussion

Here are a couple of threads that come from completely different perspectives but that should give you pause for thought. In the first, "What’s Your Backup Strategy?" , jammo sparks a conversation about sensible backup strategies and how best to implement them. In the other, urlwolf points us to a thought provoking piece on the demise of a music sharing service and the politics of DRM. Look for it at "oink is dead: what is next?" .

6. Software Solutions Requested

Donationcoders constantly seek ways to increase their productivity while they are on their computers and often post requesting suggestions about how to do this. Frequently, this is posted as a request for software options. Below are a sampling of some recent requests. Alternatives are always welcome, so please, post away.

7. Specific Software Discussion

Wreckedcarzz posted about his experiences with iTunes and what finally "drove him over the edge". He posted about it in a piece called "A rant about how I finally ditched iTunes" .

8. Fun and Games

Work, work, work. Yawn. Reinvigorate yourself with some downtime - play a game or have a laugh. Here are some suggestions posted over the past two weeks.

9. Developer's Corner

Donationcoder is a community of software enthusiasts, but it is more than that. It's also a place where you can discuss and learn about software developement. You can start learning about software development in the Programming School on the Developer's Corner board. For some of the recent discussions on the Developer's Corner, read on:

10. Coding Snacks

Looking for a simple application to make life easier? Can't find it? Post a request to have one of Donationcoder's able coders write one for you in the Post New Requests Here section of the Coding Snacks board. Below are a few recent requests.

11. Site of the Month

Our site of the month for November is one of my daily reads: MakeUseOf.com.  Though perhaps relying a little much on the "top 10 tools" genre, MakeUseOf does a great job of summarizing the top tools or tips in an area, while adding enough of a personal informed recommendation to make their frequent blogs very enjoyable and educational reads.  Combined with an occasional longer instructional post, MakeUseOf is a terrific addition to the software blogging field, and well worth your attention.  ps. They accept donations as well.

Good one Armando - I didn't notice the resemblance until you mentioned it - well spotted

Nagative

Good word - conjures up nagging and negative in one concise statement  ;D :-* :P

You and Chris (who posted while I pecked away at my keyboard) both made more clearly a point that I was trying to make: if you post the amount raised, even if you do so after the fact, you run the risk of people saying: "Crap! $12,000! These guys are flush with cash and I helped them get there. I have needs! I have rights! Bend to my wll!". Yeah, OK, a bit of a reach but it IS Sunday afternoon where I am and when I was kid that meant reruns of sci-fi movies from the 1920's and 30's... Buck Rogers, Metropolis, good times, good times...
3939
I think that a fundraiser is necessary and I think that your desire to be as transparent as possible is noble, but I, too, get squirmy at the thought of you posting targets and the amount raised. Personally, I'd LOVE to see you raise $100,000 and would not begrudge the site a penny of it. However, you highlighted my fear exactly: many people will look at a figure like $8,698.27 and think to themselves "the drive is doing well, they don't need my $5". I think you would also find that doing this might change the dynamic of the site - sort of commoditize it (is commoditize a word? Anyone? Wordzilla?) and thus increase demands on your time and the community's resources ("I paid my $5 and I want x,y, and z. I'm the customer, dammit, and I'm always right!"). This is happening to our school district. The current provincial government slashed spending on education so drastically from 2001 to 2005 that every school district in BC began, and continue to, actively pursue international students to come and study in our schools. Guess what? Now we have 100's of parents that are paying big money to have their kids in our classrooms and many of them feel that they should get preferential treatment and that they should have a major say in the curriculum, who teaches their kids, what schools their kids go to, whether or not their kids should be in ESL, whether or not the school district has the right to send problem students home, etc., etc. Who's to say that they're wrong (or right)? I digress. The point is that you might find yourself swamped with demands that I am unable to anticipate but which I am sure will be time consuming to deal with.

Now... ideas. Crumb, I'm no good at this. My present financial situation attests to the fact that I am very good at spending money but hopeless at figuring out how to get my mitts on significant amounts of it. That said, I don't think that you should feel pressured to "justify" doing this. The community is all the justification necessary, as far as I am concerned. Perhaps this should be the focal point: donate to support the forums and the contests. Maybe you and Josh can come up with some pick  :-[ big ticket giveaways for December to encourage people to donate to become eligible (I'd limit it to big ticket software and avoid hardware, though). For people who have already donated, convincing them to make another contribution shouldn't be a hardsell - we've already given and know what we're getting for our money. I'll put up more money to make sure that it continues. If every member donated $1 you'd be close to my $100,000 target. That's my challenge to every donationcoder member: make a donation, however small, in next month's fundraiser, whether you've already donated or not! With luck this will average out to a significant sum.

Edit: see strikethrough. Doh!

Yup, Tom, I can confirm what Chris says about Canadian spelling - right down to being cursed with the certainty of making a mistake somewhere (witness my attempts to use "ise" and "ize" correctly  :o). Ah well, makes life interesting! For myself, I find "colour" without the "u" rather bland - colourless you might say! Just my little quirk, though. I imagine there are Americans who get annoyed in the other direction - I suspect that my wife is one of them!

Yes - Open/Star Office can hardly be offered up as examples of speed demons. Having said that, it is worth noting that from my understanding this is actually due to their ongoing decision to preload all of the components whenever a user fires up any part of the suite...

I just timed it - virtualized on the Centrino, Win2k took 80 seconds to load. On my PIII-E it takes about... 80 seconds. So much for seat of the pants impressions... I guess this just reflects how anaemic my current CPU is compared to a modern processor - it's single core and the first generation P-M versus the dual core speed demons available today. Of course, I suppose I could play around with other virtualization options. Frankly, though, I'm tempted to lose the one that I've got as I don't really have a need for it (beyond the tried and true "gee whiz, neato" factor).

My concern WRT the VM is that on my notebook, booting Win2k with 1GB virtual RAM into VirtualPC takes longer than booting Win2k on a PIII-E notebook with 512MB RAM. The author of the piece states that he virutalized some installations but used a P4 machine with 256MB RAM for others. I guess I should re-phrase my concern as being limited to wishing to see the tests run either on the same hardware or all virtualized on the same machine.

:-[ I've now read the article and the comments - REALLY interesting stuff. My main concerns reading the piece were voiced by a number of posters to the comments section: it would be interesting to see the various versions of Windows and Office combined and tested as well and it would be more meaningful (to me) if the tests were conducted on actualy hardware, rather than VMWare.
