General Software Discussion / Re: LastPass - What are your thoughts?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 30, 2013, 05:29 PM »
Since my last post in here (almost three years ago!) I've used LastPass very extensively and have even become a paid subscriber. It's not perfect, but I really like it and it works very well for my needs across all my devices (Windows PCs and Android phones/tablets). I'd highly recommend it.

They've got a specfic firmware on this model that doesn't seem to give us this capability.

Yeah, sadly I've given up hope on this. )c:

Just finished "Impostor", a 2001 sci-fi movie starring Gary Sinese. Good movie. Surprise-ending.

Wow! I was just thinking of Impostor (2001) these past few days, but I couldn't remember the title of it! Thanks!

Probably just that he's mooning us.

I saw World War Z (2013) the other day.

It was decent. But if you spend any amount of time thinking about it, you'll find all sorts of plot holes. Sometimes you don't even need to spend time thinking about it, like when they're stuck in gridlocked traffic and a motorcycle cop drives up between the cars and tells them to stay in their car, then he suddenly gets plowed into by a big truck. How did that big truck get through all the traffic that was behind them? (I actually noticed that continuity error from the trailer some months ago.)

But I guess it was worth seeing once.

One could say that it's just as easy to make an imprint of a door key in clay to use as a template for making duplicate as evidence that door keys have been broken.  Even though that's true, most burglars won't even bother with that amount of trouble or subtlety. That doesn't mean door keys are completely useless, just that they're not a complete security solution.

One difference is that you don't leave little imprints of your key everywhere you go like you leave your fingerprints on everything you touch.

I made another update to this game. It's come to a place I'm pretty happy with, considering where it started. Heck, even a week ago when I made the original post in this thread I said I wasn't very proud of the result. But with the work I've done on it in the past week, I do feel pleased with what it's become.

So if it interests you, check out the latest version: Be Tiny, World! v1.130921.14

I'm presuming you can connect one directly, but wondering:
When you have two of them playing stereo, can you connect them up directly (to the one socket)?

You can connect them directly with wires, but only the speaker that is connected will play that way. Or in other words, it will be mono. (Though it would probably still sound better than my tablet's speakers, and most Android devices only have a single speaker anyway, so it's not really that bad.)

Maybe if I had a special splitter cable thingy that would take an output and split it into left and right audio channels I could do it. But that kind of defeats the purpose of the nice wireless speaker setup.

HMDX Jam Plus Portable Speaker (Blue)

Great for my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet, because even though it has stereo sound already, the speakers aren't great quality and sound a bit "tinny".

I realized a problem with these speakers: They won't work well for helping my tablet's speakers when watching a movie or videos because the sound is slightly delayed. I'm sure this is more a problem with bluetooth/wireless speakers in general and not really a complaint specific to these particular speakers. But I didn't realize at the time that the audio and video wouldn't be synced, so I guess they're mostly only good for listening to music or other audio that doesn't have accompanying video. That's kind of a bummer.

Oh well, they work well bringing my music into my car with me, since my car only has a non-working cassette player and I can't stand listening to the radio (if it even works in my car...).

I watched Oblivion (2013) last night. It was decent. It was a little slow getting into the plot, and I remember thinking a few times throughout the movie, "Wow, this is a long movie!" But that's not to say I was bored or waiting for it to be over. It was interesting. Ultimately it was a little disappointing, especially because it was such a high budget movie and yet I feel it pulled off the story less well than Moon (2009), which had a similar plot. (IMDB says Oblivion had a $120,000,000 budget and Moon had a $5,000,000 budget!)

While there were some things in the movie that I thought to myself, "that doesn't make sense why that would happen," the more I think about Oblivion, the more I realize things don't make sense. I could go into more details, but. . . Spoilers!

Then I also watched The Bourne Legacy (2012) which was probably an alright movie in it's own right, but somewhat disappointing for a Bourne movie. I felt it took too long to get to the fun, secret agent/spy/fight-for-your-life-survival stuff that made the Bourne Trilogy so exciting, and even when they were doing those parts, they didn't seem quite as thrilling as in the Jason Bourne movies. The opening sequence of climbing/hiking through the mountains of Alaska felt too much James Bond or Mission Impossible 2 (which I didn't like because it was too much like James Bond rather than the good, secret, nobody-even-knew-you-were-there covert ops of the first MI). He's supposed to be a superbly trained, smart weaponized human, but that sequence just shows him taking what I considered to be unnecessary risks and exhibiting reckless behavior. I also didn't care much for how the movie kept going to other people's points of view. Especially the female doctor (does it say more about the film or myself that I can only remember her by her false identity name of June? And I wouldn't even remember Aaron's name if she wasn't screaming it out so often, even though he's supposed to be under the cover name of James). I think they needed a better way to build the back story (or current story) than to cut to her point of view. And I don't feel like her character added to the movie. Her part could have been removed and almost everything else could still have played out mostly the same way. And it would have even shaved 30 minutes from the film because they wouldn't have needed to include the scene at her house (totally saw that coming).

When all was said and done, I didn't feel the main character was as well trained or expertly skilled or formidable as Jason Bourne, and yet he's supposed to be an upgrade. As I said, if they would have tried to pass this off as a Bourne-alike without using the Bourne brand, I think I would have considered it a decent movie, but in using the Bourne franchise (of which I'm a fan!) they just weren't able to live up to what I consider the superior examples of the previous movies.

And as much as I love Moby, hearing Extreme Ways at the end of each Bourne film is getting old. . . It was kind of cool to hear it again at the end of the second film, but by the third it was like "Oh... yeah, that song again... except a worse rendition of it..." and it's gotten even worse for Legacy. Bummer.

I went camping last weekend with a group of friends/acquaintances and someone brought one of these things. I was so impressed with the quality of the sound and the battery life (rechargable from a microUSB port) that I bought two of these. They just arrived moments ago. They're awesome. I can pair them up for stereo sound and put one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen or whatever fits my needs.

Great for my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet, because even though it has stereo sound already, the speakers aren't great quality and sound a bit "tinny".

These Jam Plus speakers are surprisingly good, considering how small they are. I can feel the bass when I hold them in my hand.

BTW Version 1.130917.12

That's right! I never got the latest builds uploaded because as I was uploading the builds I decided to check how much space I was using on my host to make sure I wasn't going over my limit and I noticed some strange trends with storage and bandwidth. After some research I found out that spambots got access to a subdomain wiki on my site and created a zillion spam pages and I was trying to take care of that when I got pulled away from my PC. But now I've uploaded the latest builds so you're welcome to try it out if you'd like.

I added a "Kid Mode" to the game, which gives you a little drone that shoots at planets in the latest version that might help make things easier for you. ;)

Actually, I liked the challenge of having to avoid a world you already made tiny provides.  It's like a 'bonus' difficulty.  Don't know if you had that in mind when you coded it, but it works.

Yeah, that was part of the idea. The smaller they get, the harder they are to hit, and the easier they are to lose in the particle effects and accidentally crash into them if you're not careful. :) The other, more obvious part of the challenge is that the planets get bigger and bigger over time.

Even in Kid Mode, it eventually becomes somewhat of a challenge to survive due to the size of the planets.

Just downloaded the PDF, and since it won't open properly

It opened for me, but it took several seconds (maybe up to about a minute!) for it to open with Adobe PDF reader. I didn't try a different reader. But I did upload it to my Google Books account so I can load it up and read/refer to it on my Android tablet.

Linux version runs great, Deo.  Too bad I keep crashing into the tiny worlds because I have to start shooting at a big world coming my way...  :'(

Glad to hear it runs well on Linux! Out of curiosity, which distro are you running it on and is it 32 or 64-bit? Also, did you happen to get v1.130919.13?

I haven't posted about it here (or anywhere, for that matter) because I just barely got it built and uploaded to my site and then I've been away from the PC all day and haven't had a chance. But I added a "Kid Mode" to the game, which gives you a little drone that shoots at planets in the latest version that might help make things easier for you. ;)

2013-09-19 02.42.07.jpg

Notable changes in v1.130919.13:

  • Kid Mode
  • More music during gameplay
  • Fixed music playing before loading volume settings (which could cause sounds even when volume is at 0%)
  • Fixed really large worlds spawning immediately on screen (as opposed to spawning off screen and slowly coming into the viewport)
  • More leaderboards/achievements (Android only)
  • Other bugfixes and tweaks.

Why are you taking screen shots of text? Why not just copy and paste and wrap the QUOTE tag around it? Like this:

While IE11 on Windows 8.1 is -- for obvious reasons given the newer OS's emphasis -- heavily reliant on touch and gestures, IE11 on Windows 7 is a keyboard-and-mouse application. It also places the address bar at the top of the window, unlike at the bottom as does IE11 on Windows 8.1's "Modern" nee "Metro" user interface (UI).

The Windows 7 browser also omitted support for SPDY -- the Google-designed page load acceleration protocol -- won't sync open tabs between machines, as does Google's Chrome, Mozilla's Firefox and IE11 on Windows 8.1; and cannot keep as many tabs open as 8.1's version.

Cool I'm glad it works. I've done some more work on the game since I originally made this post, and now there's a fairly significant graphics upgrade:
