They're lame snake-oil.

The point is to use it as a diagnostic. Not a fix.
It's tough to fix the error if you have no clue what it is.

I'm just asking because I think one of those freeware memory tools that force Windows to create a large contiguous block of memory may actually work on XP. It may be worth an experiment to zero in on the issue. You should be able to find some free ones on Softpedia.

Factors that effect DLL searching

Apparently the registry keeps a list of known dlls.  Also if the dll is already loaded in ram Windows probably won't search for it.  Process of elimination could involve a lot of reboots.

Edit: I came across this jvm.dll trouble-shooting guide

I haven't tried it myself but Ant Renamer claims it can read a list from a file and do the renames in batch.

www.antp.be/software/renamer/features

FreeCommander does not have the scratch pane feature. But it has a search where you can list the drives to search on a single line.  There's a button to export the list to a file. By default pressing Alt-F7 brings up the search dialog.

Two step process but it may be a viable freeware-only solution.

Delayed Cuts 1.3.0.0  "Move To Top" has been restored to Context Menu. The logic has been improved so that if only the top item is selected, it will be disabled in the menu. Likewise Move To Bottom is disabled if the bottom item is the only selection.

Note: At this time there is no "undo" for multiple cuts. If you cut items, then cut again, and want to abandon these changes, quit without saving.

Delayed Cuts 1.2.6.0  The "Move To Top" feature I enabled in the last update has been replaced by Cut, Paste, and Move To Bottom.

If an item is selected when invoking Paste from the Context Menu, the cut items are inserted before the selection. To place items at the very bottom you can Paste with no item selected or use Move To Bottom.

I think I have the logic to set the contents "dirty" when something is moved, cut, sorted etc.. and prompt when quiting. But I haven't tested it thoroughly yet. If you notice a bug please post here.

Delayed Cuts 1.2.5.0

Added Context Menu with "Move To Top" command. It may seem weird
but I find it handy to allow selection of the item already at the top. Say
you selected the item at the bottom, then hit Move To Top. Now you want to
select a couple of items to slide underneath it. Select the top item and the
other 2. It's just simpler than cut and paste. Now the ListView does not
enforce the Sorted attribute.  It's not needed for DelayedLoad as that sorts
the file lines on load independantly. The sorting just aids the user in
determining which shortcut will be launched when.

You can select only the top item, then Move To Top in the Context Menu.
But unless other items were moved the Save Button will not enable.

Another change, when a Column is clicked to sort or reverse sort the list,
it is detected as a change. The Save Button should become enabled.

If you play around with the Move To Top, column sort, and ReGap Buttons you
should find it becomes easy to rearrange the order and timing of program loads.
This should drastically curtail resorting to the F2 Function Key.

layed Cuts 1.2.2.0 Now instead of one ReGap Button I've split it into ReGap5 and ReGap10 Buttons. That should handle it without popping up an InputBox as 5 and 10 second gaps would be the most logical to use.

Delayed Cuts 1.2.0.0 Added ReGap Button.  In the past if you deleted an item and wanted to tighten up the delays to fill in the gap, it required pressing F2 on each item and manually entering a number.  Now pressing the ReGap Button takes the delay from the first selected item, and increments it by 10 seconds for each successive item in the list. Another use; change the delay for the item at the top, press ReGap to reset the delays for the entire list in one shot.

Note that ReGap Button does not test that the delays are sorted in ascending order.  The DelayedLoad program does not choke if more that one item has the same delay time. But to ensure you have enough time to double click the Tray Icon to abort an item while loading, you may want to sort the list for the regapping.  Also no check is made for the delays exceeding the 600 second max.  The world won't end if you go over. :)

media.autoplay.enabled
That's interesting.
Mine was set to "True" - that's the default state.
That's why I couldn't understand @MilesAhead's earlier difficulty.

I set it to False. That stopped the autoplay while still allowing the mp3 links. Looks like I can dispense with Stop Autoplay. I'll just keep it backed up in case I find a need.  But so far I don't see one with these settings.

edit: Hmm, seems I need Stop Autoplay after all. With all the restarts every time you change something it's hard to tell what's what until you use the new settings for a bit.

For interests sake, in about:config there's also media.autoplay.enabled which acts on HTML5 content.

Thank you. That seems to fix it up. :)

I started to use it and it seems to have worked faultlessly - I'm up to Firefox v17 now.
There is a similar feature in Chrome, and I use that too.

Thanks. I've set it. Trying it out now. :)

Edit: It does block autoplay.  But it has the side-effect I don't get the mp3 download links. Stop AutoPlay allows me to see the links. I guess it's worth carrying one extra AddOn to avoid installing Opera just for that. :)

I use the Plugins Disabled in chromium too. That works on most sites but has the same mp3 link blocking side-effect. :(

General Software Discussion / Re: Selector 3.4.3.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 07, 2012, 04:53 PM »
Selector 3.4.3.0 Adjusted popup animation speed.  Added Tooltip Help to Loop Launch check box.
Basically the idea of Loop Launch is you can select text that has a parameter per line. An example would be a bunch of web addresses.

fakeUrl1
fakeUrl2
fakeUrl3

If you have Loop Launch checked, the text is split at end of line and the program you select from the list is launched for each param.

Another example might be an editor that doesn't accept multiple filenames on the command line, but will open a new tab if another instance of the editor is launched.  Or a file manager like Free Commander etc..

There's an ini file setting LoopDelay=n for seconds delay to give the first instance time to load.

I use Selector

to pass a page to a different browser when the current one doesn't have the facility. But in this case only Opera wanted to show the links on the site in question. I had to get rid of NoScript to see them in FF or install Opera just for that site. I don't like Opera enough to install just for that. If it already happens to be on, then fine. :)

Whoever is doing the page must have a lame scripting style. There were buttons to play Podcast crap but if you just wanted to download mp3 there were no links. I had to send the dude an email.

After doing Chromium for some time I'm back to Firefox/Waterfox as my primary browsers. Anyway, Chromium did have a built in multi-media blocker. Just disable all plugins.  I don't know what you guys are using, but Stop AutoPlay seems to work.

Just thought I'd post because when I first tried to get it on mozilla, it showed it as discontinued by author. But it's still available for download from Softpedia:

Stop AutoPlay Firefox Extension

You may want to try it before it's pulled down.

I've just started using it. One thing I noticed is download of audio files, like for radio shows that make podcast and mp3 of the show available, may be blocked also unless you add the site to the white list. (The links where you would normally "save link as" don't even show up if the files are blocked.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Any program to manually run startup programs?
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 06, 2012, 10:43 AM »

This is just a generic "click on icon and open a window" - no fancy sessions or anything. It just seems to take FF some30-45 seconds to get a handle on stuff and get going right after a cold boot.

But when you open FF like that is it to a blank page or  startup page full of stuff? I've found with browsers often if you have something in the startup page, even speed dial, it can bog when the disk is busy especially. Bringing up a blank page, then clicking a button that loads the exact same thing, seems to save 30 seconds on a busy disk and maybe even a few seconds on an idle system. Seems if it has to walk and chew gum at the same time it bogs. :)

Another possibility would be to use RunInTrayMod to delay loading FF minimized to tray. Then when you go to use it, it's already in ram.

How are you opening Firefox? Do you open to a session with multiple tabs? I don't do much with Tab Mix Plus. So I don't know if there's a hotkey to open a session. But it seems to respond much faster if you can separate the loading of the app from the loading of pages. I open to a blank page. Then I hit a button to open FVD Speed Dial. Admittedly I don't use sessions. But you could experiment with open to blank page then hitting a button to open last session.

That's the main reason I was using chromium. Even with it I opened to a blank page. But it was snappier than FF until the last couple of versions. Seems like 14 and later loaded much faster. I'm on 16.01 Waterfox now and 16.02 on the 32 bit machine.
