Well, here it is.  I've re-categorized everything.  I had to edit some code to make it go reverse alphabetical.

Personal
Professional
Nonsense

I like Nonsense because it's sort of funny.  In the other categories, I'll have serious topics.  In the Nonsense category, I'll have my stupid, fun articles...like the one about my coffee mug.

And it gives a little humor to the menu bar, which is always nice.  Not too much, just a sprinkle.

Also, to asnwer the question of who is this for?  It's a mixture.  The motivation behind it is because Wordpress has limited sorting abilities.  It's not anything more profound than that.  But after getting into it, now I want to have somewhat logical divisions.  So now it's for me.  Of course, i also want it to make sense to my readers.  But, honestly, I have maybe less than 5 readers, and I don't think they spend much time browsing the site.

I don't like opinion, because everything in these articles is my opinion, and rather strong ones at that.

mitzevo, I agree with pretty much everything you said.  I like Miscelleneous, but because of the alphabet, it would appear in front, which is bad.  but I can write a function to sort backwards.  Or I can use 'Other".

Another tactic is to make a list of all your interests, be as specific as possible, and group from there

For example, if you have a category Engineering instead of Professional, I know what to expect when I click on it.
That's what I had before, but it got messy because i couldn't sort it the way I wanted.  I'd have Engineering, then miscellaneous, then software.  i want Miscellaneous at the end (of course).

This change is probably temporary until Wordpress comes out with v3, where I'm hoping I'll be able to custom sort the categories.  Then, I'll broaden them up again.

As for Fun.  Hmm...I was thinking about that.  But Fun stuff is in my personal section.

I was also thinking "Social"...but that also fits under Personal.

I was also thinking:
Piss, Poo, Puke
just because they are all gross and, more importantly, alliterated.

Maybe i don't need a third.  Everything falls into place nicely with personal and professional.  Still, it's always nice to have three.  i can't think of anything good, though.

How about Personal, Professional, & Uncategorized
Less is more ;)
I like it!  I'd like to have something more fun that "uncategorized".  I like the other two though.  I'm definitely using those.

I want to re-categorize my website.  Part of the reason is because in Wordpress it's impossible to sort categories in your own custom order.  Yes, it's annoying.  But it's still the best website thing out there.

But I was just thinking about it, and my website is personal.  It's about my life.  So, I want to make the top level categories the categories of life.  What would you guys say that is?  i don't want any more than 3 top level categories.  I am very open to suggestions.

Here's my attempt:
--Work (possible alternatives: Career,

--Personal

--Random

I know.  it sucks.  I'm not familiar with philosophy.  Anyways, please help!

The archive function shouldn't delete the emails.  It moves the emails.  i think in the settings it uses the word "delete" but I think it's confusing.  Make sure your stuff gets moved to an archive file.  Here's a screenshot of my preferences:
screenshot_20100525065940.png

I don't think that answers your question specifically, but maybe it helps.

It should be easy to make a rule that moves all messages older than 2008 into a folder, and then you can manually archive that folder.  I don't know if the rule can archive it also, i don't see why not.  I hate Outlook's rules interface.  I hate a lot of things about Outlook.  I have a thread here about Outlook...I think I curse in it more than any other thread around here.

haha ya I didn't realize this until after I posted it. Well hopefully this will attract some good mac donation-ware!

About 4 and 5 if the kids in the next booth over from us were anything to go by last time we went out for pizza. Both kids were swearing up a storm and not being all that quiet about it either.

Both sets of well-dressed parents sat there talking to each other, totally oblivious to the words coming out of their kids' mouths - and the glares from most of the other tables.

Rather sad when you think about it... :(
Ha!  Sad...seriously.  I'm a 1st generation American, so a joke I like to make among friends in situations like that is to blame it on the "Americans".  So, I'll be like, "See what happens with you Americans."  Tongue in cheek, of course.  Reminds me of a Russel Peters skit.

I like the flexible width of your site, Perry.  I may have to try to do that later, also.

Thanks!
mouser, yes, the motto is displayed twice (once in my logo picture, and also with text next to it).  I don't know how to take the text one off, I've mentioned it to the theme developer.  I tried commenting stuff out in the theme, but I don't know what I'm doing.

All these things look like simple changes, but for every little thing, you have to go in and get the code exactly right.  Man, programming can make a person go crazy!
3893
Hi everyone, I am in the middle of changing my website look.  It's pretty stressful for me because I'm not good with programming.  So I'm hacking it together with existing themes and cutting/pasting things I find around.  My front page is not ready yet, but here's an example page of an article:
http://aram.dcmember...g/bluebeam-pdf-revu/

My goals are:

--widescreen, so articles are easy to read.  I want it to feel like you are reading a piece of paper (8.5x11, like a magazine).  I hate how most articles now are narrow.  before this, if I put a medium sized picture, it pushes all the text aside and makes the article look super long.  It's not pleasant to read.  And I think narrow is the trend so people can clutter all the area around it to stick in ads and a bunch of other things that take attention away from the article.  I truly hate it.  I know, some people will say narrow is good to accommodate smaller resolutions or monitors, but those days are gone.  Even the cheap monitors now are at least 1024 pixels wide.  i want people to be able to read comfortably.

--simple and elegant.  No clutter.  No widgets around the sides.  I don't want it to look like a blog.  I want it to look like a place to read articles.  I know I can't get away from the "wordpress" look, but it's still pretty clean and nice so far.

--one-column.  No more multiple columns for me.

Anyway, I am loving it.  if I do say so myself, it's the most easy to read website that I've come across, and I've only started!

Now, if only someone would come up with a nice CMS system that tranglos was asking about a while back.

Yes, but it's worth it.  Definitely the best program in it's class.

On a related note - software products that provide the option to download the installer as either an EXE or a ZIP file - but where the ZIP file contains nothing but the same EXE file.

Umm...there's a thing called broadband, guys! Shaving 48K off a 3MB EXE file by zipping it is hardly worth the effort anymore.

 :P
Ha!  Seriously...goes back to what I once said about installers for the tiny, little 500k software saying "Please wait, this may take a few minutes."  I don't it has ever taken even a minute...even back on my 486 machine.

Living Room / How to build website for article repository?
« Last post by superboyac on May 18, 2010, 11:36 AM »
I am interested in building another website.  This one will house a ton of articles.  Each one is a recap of a Laker game.  There has been an article written by a certain user on a forum for the past several years.  It represents a huge amount of work, and I'd like to showcase in a nice, polished website.

Ideally, the website would be super simple, yet elegant.  Maximum 2-columns.  One to show an article, and another column to navigate to a particular game.  I'm thinking the navigation can be by date (where you see a mini-calendar on the side), and/or you can pick a specific game based on season/game number/opponent/etc.  It would be nice to have a nice search feature also.  What is the best way to go about doing this?

Each of the articles has been made as a forum post, so there is bbcode involved.  So, I'm thinking I will have to use a lot of batch editing tools to format all the articles in a way where they can by systematically uploaded to the website without much fuss (once the system is in place).  In fact, it would be nice if I could use the bbcodes to do what they do on posts, and have it show up in the website the same way.  but if that is not possible, I would need to batch edit the articles to replace bbcode with their proper analogous code in php or html or whatever.

Now, i know the first option to consider is Wordpress.  Which is fine.  But I'm interested in other options or suggestions if anyone has any.  I'm not a fan of the blog format, but I have to admit in this case, it begs for a blog format because it's all organized my date anyway.

As usual, thanks!

Also, I want to freak out anyone who doesn't back up, to motivate them to backup.  This is an excerpt from my article I posted above.  I just remembered how close I was to another disaster because I didn't used to backup:

-------------------
-----EXCERPT-----
I started Windows and everything was fine (it takes a little longer to boot while the SATA adpater does something).  I formatted the drive with NTFS using Windows default administration tools.  I set up DirSync to transfer the information over and after double-checking several times, I started the process.  It took a while (a few hours?) but when it was done, it was all very good.  I checked to see if the data was properly backed up and everything.  I was happy, and took a couple of hours off for good behavior.  I came back to the computer to do some other stuff, was browsing the internet, and, BAM, everything freezes on the screen.  I couldn't do anything, I couldn't even reboot or type, move the mouse...nothing.  I thought, "No big deal, the computer just crashed."  When I restarted, the BIOS would not recognize my old Seagate 300 GB storage drive.  It was gone.  That was a disaster.  I was so freaked out and devastated that I had to go on my bed and just lie down for a minute.  You see, I had forgotten that I had just backed up all the data only hours before!  It took me a few minutes to remember that fact, but when I did, I was relieved a little.  However, now, I was on pins and needles because my data was still only in one location on the new Seagate.  Just to be safe, I pulled the drive out and was not intending to use it again until I receive the replacement drive from Seagate.  THAT'S WHY YOU WANT THE 5-YEAR WARRANTY; THAT OLD DRIVE WAS COVERED UNTIL 2010!

It sounds like you want Super Flexible File Synchronizer:
http://www.superflexible.com/

It has a gargantuan amount of options.  It can create a mirror of your files however you like.  I use it to keep multiple copies of my files on a couple of backup drives.  I also have a simpler program called DirSync that does the same thing, with much fewer poweruser features, but more pleasant to use:
http://www.archersoft.com/

Now, as far as doing incremental updates, that's a somewhat different story.  SFFS can do incremental backups.  Of course, setting it up is more complicated than just mirroring files.  But it's capable of doing it, and since SFFS is such a fantastic program, you know it will do it well.

Personally, I also use Genie backup Manager in addition to SFFS.  While SFFS backs up ALL my files (mirroring on multiple drives), Genie does an incremental backup on just my documents (like Word files, presentations, homework, etc....but NOT large files like videos, music, installers, etc.).  Also, SFFS backs up the Genie incremental backups.

As you can see, there are multiple things going on.  In case you haven't read it yet, you should read mouser's very detailed article on how to backup and the importance of it:
Power User Backup Guide

I also have written a little something on backing up, but mouser's is much better for you:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7940.0

And finally, a while back, I created a flowchart showing my backup philosophy.  I created this based on a discussion with mouser (see the original post here):

I need to make a glossary.  What is the best (or most stable) way to do it in Word 2007?  I tried finding articles, but nothing was clear to me.  I'd like to have two columns, the terms on the right left in bold, and the definitions on the right in normal style.

What is the best forum to get answers to Microsoft Word questions?  I like the tutorials shown in this thread, but a lot of what they say is for Word 2003 or older.  And while they may apply to 2007 also, i want to know for sure.  For example, the experts say to avoid using tables because of instability issues, but I wonder if that is fixed in 2007.  Also, I want to know if some of the fancier features, like Building Blocks, are ok to use, or if they are also unstable.  Thanks.
