General Software Discussion / Re: how do I remove an entire context menu?
« Last post by Curt on September 18, 2010, 06:51 PM »
I have "decided" that the problem not is caused by the context menus themselves, but by the combination of many audio files and CD cover photos.  Explorer is then not 'sure' / have forgotten if the folder should display as a picture holding or music holding -folder. Hence the two different menus from a slightly unstable Vista Explorer.

Plausible?  :tellme:

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of BetaClock
« Last post by Curt on September 17, 2010, 12:59 PM »
I really like your review, Aram. Wonder how I missed to see it when first posted. I have been using BetaClock since it was first announced by AlphaClock, which just had replaced my beloved TClockEx. BetaClock really is The Clock!

However, to cut down on the number of applications on my PC, I have just today had it replaced with CFi ShellToys' build-in clock, Clock+. It is much more simple, but to me it is almost a perfect substitute. But not freeware.

I went ahead and bought it... I used a coupon and paid about $27, but note that since then Altaro have lowered their price to $29. So far, so good!

-now $37

Edited:
-now coupon code ECZ4V3 makes it $29.60

Your xkcd downloader works really well :-) I was able to import>Copy the xkcd/app directory's images into Comical without any problems. Comical will itself "merely" search for and download updates to collections, not download entire collections.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to insert breaks in PowerPoint 2003 ?
« Last post by Curt on September 15, 2010, 07:49 AM »
You cannot change the style within the same paragraph/level, you must make the new style be a new level:

The screenshot is from PowerPoint 2010, but the principles should be the same.
I will recommend Office 2010, the trial period does not limit the features.

I don't know what the modern version of Photo$hop can do. But in PhotoFiltre Studio X it is quite simple. As seen on the screenshot you can set the tolerance to anything between 0 and 100. Default is 30, 100 will mark all, but 0 is the exact colour or shape of your choice. For shapes, it may of course be a problem to make the program agree with you what tolerance is needed. But for colours it is easy, remembering that the colour now is marked wherever it is in the picture, which may be a problem of its own. I feel certain the marker in PhotoShop is even more capable (far more capable)!

"Farve" = Colour.

I need it to be in the original quality

IMO this requirement will push you to spend money (and even then, still no guarantee it will be in the original quality). PDF Converter 7 (the $49.99 version) appears to have the ability to "Convert PDF and XPS documents into all Microsoft Office formats in a click."  I have never used it, but I know some people swear by the Pro version of it.

-I believe the $100 PRO version is needed if .XPS must be included.

Nuance, compare features, (each screenshot approx 960 pixels wide)
Edited: not a good width without a widescreen! >The original pdf document< may suite your monitor better! [Pictures removed.]

Edit #2:
Actually, I imagine the $150 Enterprise version is needed, for the jobs kalos described -
Nuance is a converter, not an editor.

Thanks for telling about this new reader, cmpm. Nitro's free reader is surprisingly good - especially at the price! It will however not load quite as fast as the advert makes you imagine, and for what I know, it can "merely" extract text and images, not 'tables'.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Curt on September 13, 2010, 12:16 PM »
I'd tried UE and did see a similarity, but the feel of CE was a lot more snappy than UE
Yep, UE is sluggish ...

An explanation from CE's forum, from the author of UltimateExplorer:

Marko [from CubicExplorer] uses my components in CE.  I mainly made UE [UltimateExplorer] to try to exercise as many options in my components as possible, hence its temperament.   There are dozens on features available to CE in the components but Marko has chosen to take the opposite spectrum and make CE as simple as possible.  The buggyness of UE is good from my point of view because it help find problems in the components that helps make CE more stable.

CubicExplorer 0.92 is a simple but stable version of UltimateExplorer (mustangpeak). CE's author already has announced that version 2 will be written in a different language, and maybe with a different license. So, even though CubicExplorer 1 is very good, the present version seems to have a limited future. Of course the author's plan is to make version 2 even better ;-) but also quite different.

hmm... looking with 'new eyes', I think one is for picture files and the other one for music files. Yeah, that must be the problem. Hmm... this is the music directory; the folders already are marked as containing audio files. Obviously this feature is not all stable! Can it be made stable?

General Software Discussion / how do I remove an entire context menu?
« Last post by Curt on September 11, 2010, 11:48 AM »
Having tried this and that program, I now have two context menus for music files folders! They shift turns, to display, but not consistent. [Edited: They don't show at the same time] One is the one I want, the other is missing Windows Media Player, among other things:

..., but when I tried Reshade Image Enlarger I came to realize the difference between being fairly good and being the best. I have been very impressed with Reshade. And shouldn't I: The normal asking price is $150 !!!  ...

I've just tested it again, and I now remember why I didn't keep it the first time, aside from the cost. In some ways it is plain stupid! The author seriously needs some help on how to make a userfriendly program!

But still  I am mighty impressed with the picture quality! I just want to remind 'you' not to purchase Reshade before testing!

My complaint concerned version 1.5 only. Version 2 (Beta) is not stupid in any way. I would recommend it if I thought it would be maintained / updated. But I don't think so. In fact, I think Reshade Image Enlarger has been abandoned; No updates since 2 September 2009!
 :(

However, I use Reshade Image Enlarger almost every day, and have merely found one minor bug.

General Software Discussion / Inpaint 3 ≠ Image Mender
« Last post by Curt on September 07, 2010, 04:40 AM »
Edited:
I am pleased to announce that my original post was WRONG!!

Inpaint is not Image mender.

User interface for the new version is writted on Qt SDK, probably Image mender writed using Qt too. This explains interface similarity. Previous version of Inpaint resembled to MS Office because it interface was written using MFC sdk.
Inpaint have extended functionality compared to ImageMender, in Imagemender you can't select the donor area, and Inpaint can.

I am actively developing Inpaint, Mac version was released and online free Inpaint web service was launched.

/Maxim, author of Inpaint
-Maxim

My original post:
-----------------------
"Inpaint 3 = Image Mender"

I don't know if Teorex has been sold or what had happened, but their Inpaint 3 is similar to Image Mender 1.22! Inpaint 2 and Image Mender are VERY different from each other, they work in quite different ways, but Inpaint 3 is just like Image Mender, only with minor changes in the GUI.

If you have Inpaint 2, you have good reason to install Inpaint 3 on a different address than the default \Inpaint. I didn't know that, so I have re-installed the older version into \Inpaint 2; the two versions works fine at the same time.

I am disappointed that the homepage doesn't tell anything about the changes. I merely received an email saying that I was eligible to a free upgrade because I had purchased my key within the last 60 days.

Luckily the homepage is offering download links for both version 2.41 and version 3. But if you want me to recommend one over the other, I would say buy both! They really are quite different from each other, but Inpaint 2 is BY FAR the fastest version. At all! Image Mender / Inpaint 3 is nowhere near as fast, but might be the better choice for complex jobs.

With both versions installed, you will have to rename the shortcuts because default merely is "Inpaint"
(here my shortcuts in True Launch Bar / Quick Launch Area):

Antivirus programs tend to stop working (or at least become worthless) if you don't renew; which is why i would ignore any special offers of "a free year" of any such program.
:tellme:

It is quite easy to have reasonable shareware anti-virus programs for free for the rest of your life, if only you would bother to check out sites like giveawayoftheday each day. They all fight to give you "a free year", year after year.

are they affiliated to v3.co.uk by any chance? both websites have the same layout and goods.

http://store.v3.co.uk/

-the sites are clearly identical. But V3 says >>Incisive Media Limited, Haymarket House, 28-29 Haymarket, London SW1Y 4RX, is a company registered in England and Wales with company registration number 04038503<<, while Major Geeks merely says Major Geeks... So I don't know who is the head and who is the tail, or neither.
